neutral totes

I love simple totes with a nice attention to detail, but sometimes they aren't easy to find. Here are a few of my favorites from steven alan, target and apc:

Anna Corinna City tote ($384), APC Bag with shoulder strap (140eu) HOBO International Circuit tote ($250), Yellow Xhilaration Ruched Tote ($19.99) Anna Corinna Mini City Tote ($365) Merona Canvas Tote Bag in Admiral Blue ($14.99)

I have a thing for dachshunds and apparently Fred Flare does too.

This one's for you, Andrea

We have coats on our minds, apparently. While I was out scowering 5th Ave for a coat last night, apparently Andrea was thinking about her need for one too. She wanted some help with some inspiration, and this morning Spray Glue posted the BEST coat company thats not too terribly expensive ($250-$350), Soia & Kyo. Shop directly from there site here.

So here are my favorites, please ignore the overly bronzed-faced model.

I think this is one I'd actually go for because I have a not super warm wool coat, but this one is cute and actually seems warm!

Wow, you guys apparently I have a serious case of the TUESDAYS

good lord, I seriously need my brain checked.

tuesday tuesday tuesday

monday monday (sorry, I'm having a title problem)

It's been a serious blah Monday today and I was actually busy enough for the first time in a while to have to ignore the blog for a bit. Nothing has really been sticking out much except for Design*Sponge's amazing cradenza guide guide that blew me away.

I think my favorite is the MASH Studios LAX Entertainment Shelf

Hot.

I wish I had room for one:( I barely have room for a couch as it is!

Pen Love

I love the work of Justin Lee Williams, winner of Design is Kinky's One Colour Comp

I've been trying out some drawings in my sketchbook lately with my trusty micron pens with tiny detailed lines like that, trying to get away from just drawing text as I usually do, so it's encouraging to see such amazing work using that technique.

(his legal line on his blog scared me out of posting a picture of his work on here, so just click on the blog link kids)

1 little peek

Sorry I'm such a liar about posting apartment pictures. After much thought I decided it wasn't ready for this blog, so I'll just show a picture of the bedroom, which is pretty much done.

It's unbelievably small, barely room on either side of the bed, but it works. The wood on the back wall is blue stained wood slats we (ok, Billy) put up, which was a huge pain in the ass, but I love how interesting it makes the tiny room look.

I get a strange sense of de ja vu looking at this site, so hopefully I haven't talked about it before, but love the work at Ice Cream For Free.

Candy is a magazine available in PDF format that has..well, lots of eye candy. Great design and art, totally free. Download the issues here.

I am not a plastic bag either

I kind of love this It is OK bag available at Airside Shop.

With shipping and all that jazz it might not be worth it, but maybe.

Hey guys, sorry for the unannounced day off. My work had a spa retreat day so I was busy getting a massage and laying around in a steam room today:)

But tomorrow morning I'll post some pictures of my apartment. I'm much too sleepy to post right now

Eurotastic

Design*Sponge just posted a great link to EUROBAD '74, an exhibition of Europe's
worst interiors of 1974.
And I have to agree with her, some of them I actually like!

But my favorite one of all is this one:

What is going on in this photo? Scandalous, for sure.

Flickr finds

Some (mostly) recent photos from my flickr contacts that I love

Laundryland One by Martha Burzynski

Red by Jessica Weiser, who is also selling prints here and claims to be adding more soon...:)

Reading Material by Micah Micah

Backyard, rainy day by Lane Collins (not new at all, but I love this shot!) Lane sells prints as well, here on Etsy.

Untitled by Slot K (it might have a title but I can't read Japanese!)

Anthropologie

My pockets aren't ususally deep enough for Anthropologie's clothes, but they have some great stuff for your home, especially the kitchen, that are a little more unique and with a pricetag I can usually handle. (that completely does not include their ridiculously overpriced furniture I covet)

My recent purchases include this rad little supper time colander that I finally got to break in the other night.

and a little red butter dish

Now I have my eyes on these Euro Milk Glasses

Because I'm too lazy to shop vintage sometimes.

Neon Bible

Arcade Fire's interactive music video is such an incredibly awesome idea. Move your mouse around to interact with the video kids!

Andrei Robu

Love the work of designer/illustrator Andrei Robu.

Talking to Myself This Week

You may be wondering, what is this, a kate only blog?
Well, Miss Andrea Jean is currently in the deep south of Louisiana. Probably fanning herself and drinking sweet tea while saying things like, I do declare!
So until she returns on Monday, it's a one-girl show here. I may run out of things to talk about. I may cry a little from missing her comments on my posts. I may be fired from my job for spending too much time on the internet. I may realize only Andrea and Micah read this.

Layer Tennis

Designer geeks rejoice, you need no physical activity skills, for your sport has come. Layer tennis is a site where designers, artists and illustrators face-off in a game that uses Photoshop as its court. The players swap images and score points with creativity.

From their site:
Two artists (or two small teams of artists) will swap a file back and forth in real-time, adding to and embellishing the work. Each artist gets fifteen minutes to complete a "volley" and then we post that to the site. A third participant, a writer, provides play-by-play commentary on the action, as it happens. The matches last for ten volleys and when it's complete, everyone with an opinion sounds off in the Forums and we declare a winner.

Smashing.

In the Sweet Bye & Bye

All this talk about books lead me to take photos of my absolute favorite art book I own by one of my favorite artists, Margaret Kilgallen, In the Sweet Bye & Bye.

Margaret was married to the also amazing Barry McGee and tragically died in 2001 of cancer.

Lauren Greenfield, one of my most favorite photographers, has one of the most well designed photography sites I've ever seen. Sleek with a very simple design and really great use of flash. Check it out here: laurengreenfield.com.
Also, her book Girl Culture is absolutely amazing.

Apparently still on the theme of book porn?

The title grabbed my eye, the interior wowed me. My love for hand-drawn type is calling me to this book, Hand Job: A Catalog of Type available at You Work For Them (a really great site, by the way)

Radiohead fans with too much time on their hands make me happy

If you're as big of a nerd as me and love Radiohead, then you might enjoy this nerdtastic article. From the article:
"Consider that In Rainbows was meant to complement OK Computer, musically, lyrically, and in structure. We found that the two albums can be knit together beautifully. By combining the tracks to form one playlist, 01 and 10, we have a remarkable listening experience. The transitions between the songs are astounding, and it appears that this was done purposefully."

ps. In Rainbows is really, really, really good.

ku:nel

I keep hearing about the Japanese magazine ku:nel and I'm in love with their photography. I just want to curl up inside of them. I have no idea what's going on when I browse their website, due to the fact that I don't read Japanese, but after some very blind travels you can find some good imagery. I should really pick up a hardcopy..

Always looking for inspiration

I love flickr, I really really love it. I like the idea of using it for design work as well as photos, and there are some inspiration-worthy gems in the Design & Typography pool.

Thank you craigslist and the awesome guy who sold me an original cherner chair and knoll saarinen side chair at a great price!

pleating and gathers

I have a soft spot for pleats and gathers. This Nave dress from Impulse is stunning, I only wish it was more affordable. I love the pairing of pale tan shoes with the dark tights and dress.

Candlelight Cardy

I'm in love with Schwipe right now. I want this jacket badly, but $150 for a sweatshirt isn't quite in the cards for me right now.

Posters for grown-ups

I love when someone can make a big concert poster framed on their wall look modern and sleek instead of like a 17 year-old's bedroom. Here are some of my silkscreened favorites from The Small Stakes.

Book Porn

I think of Julia Rothman's book blog, Book By Its Cover, as book porn. mmmmmm

Good Read

I'm currently reading a really fantastic book, No One Belongs Here More Than You, Stories by Miranda July. Miranda July is a performance artist/ writer who made one of my favorite movies, Me, You and Everyone We Know. The book is really fantastic, has a very simple and well designed look, and has a hilarious & clever website: www.noonebelongsheremorethanyou.com.
Clever is the perfect word to describe her too.

Back in Action

Andrea and I have decided to give this blog a go again. I really skipped out on it due to my stressful job, huge life changing stressfulness going on, and not having a computer for a while. I also moved into a tiny room with roommates and couldn't have cared less about home products, or really buying anything for that matter. Now I have my own apartment with a wonderful guy who actually cares A LOT about what it looks like and taking care of it (gasp!), a very less stressful job, and my nesting instincts are kicking back in.
Andrea bought and moved into a house not too terribly long ago (I know, she's such a grown up like that) and got a sweet little puppy, so obviously her life hasn't been exactly stressfree and full of freetime.

So we've missed this place. So here we are again. Hello!
