before and after

I bought these pair of danish chairs off of craigslist and ebay this summer and have wanted to recover them ever since. I knew it was going to be expensive, so I put it off for as long as possible. This weekend I knew something had to be done. I marched down to the nearest upholstery shop and perused fabric swatches. It wasn't an easy task, but I found a lovely swatch that was quite affordable. I took it up to the counter and had the woman estimate the cost of creating the four cushions for my two chairs. The grand total came to $760! I told her I had to think about it, but was really thinking: I'm never coming back, I'd rather sit my butt on the hideous, worn-out tweed they are now.
When I got home I realized IKEA had some similar chairs with similar cushions. I dashed to the computer to get the dimensions and discovered that they were nearly the same! So, after driving to IKEA this afternoon, we came home with a pillow for the back and a floor cushion for the seat. This is one-thousand times better than what we had. What do you think, too beachy out-doorsy or does it work? I am quite pleased that they finally match since the other chair's cushion was yellow. The best part is the total=$160!
Thank you, IKEA.

I think these look very nice. You are so great at creating just what you want in a way that works. I am learning from you to keep a eye out for ideas by "window shopping" the net, magazines, stores. Then I can do it in a way that works for my budget and taste. Thanks!
wow, you are so smart. That is rad that they match now. I loved the plaid, but I'm a nerd and I know it didn't totally go with the rest of your livingroom.
I can't believe it was going to cost you $760 to reupholster those though! I wonder how much my dad would charge..
I totally forgot about your dad being an upholsterer!
I know that plaid had it's charm, but the other one was in the worst condition and it didn't match at all.
I'm digging neutrals + texture lately. I love color, but I only want a little bit in the house: art + pillows can provide that.
The IKEA cushions are great for now, but i'm still going to get estimates elseware and I may end up doing it myself! I'll post the journey here of course.
I have just recently had a chair and sofa reupholstered professionally, and didn't get much change out of (GASP) £2,000 --infact I blogged on the chair earlier today. It's a very expensive practice, but one I couldn't have attempted on either of my pieces of furniture unfortunately. I love how your two chairs look with the Ikea solution... they have a more loved and comfy look to them... I'd be very happy with the result if they were mine!
wow, ikea is genius!! they always save the day:)
ps. andrea, i'd love to post about this chair on cookie magazine's website -- www.cookiemag.com
