I need your help: books!

Friends, I need a book to read. I'm in the mood for a good summer read. Last night I started re-reading The Rapture of Canaan for the 6th time. It's my favorite book of alltime, but I realized that I just need something new. I like sappy chick books and memoirs, but am open to new things. Reccomendations?

Also, sorry posts are sparse and lame lately. I'm suffering from, for the first time in my life, the most god-awful allergies known to man. I went to the allergist yesterday and found out I'm allergic to trees, plants, flowers, dust and mold! So hopefully my journey into finding what medication works for me will revive me back to my old self.

I'm interested to see the suggestions.

I just finished reading White Nights by Dostoevsky and it was so sweet. But it is a short read.

Franny & Zooey is a good book.

My all-time favorite book is The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. I'd definitely give it a read.

Straight Man, by Richard Russo is my all time favorite book. It's so hilariously funny and touching. Crossing To Safety, Wallace Stegner- also balls out amazing. And if you like the Murakami books, my favorite is Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Sigh. I love books. I'm not usually a poster- don't even know how I stumbled upon this blog. But I check it daily now. Loads of lovely things and ideas. loves, anon

oh oh! I work at a library so I'm going to dive in on this one!
1. Just, I mean just finished "The History of Love" by Nicole Krauss. Really good.
2. Anything by Stuart McLean about the Vinyl Cafe. Each chapter is a short story and they are humorous and endearing.
3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Because he is a genius of story telling. His books are longer to get through though.
4. The Little Prince by Antoine Saint Exupéry... that is if you haven't read it already.

the last year or so has been all about short stories for me; you could read "willful creatures" by aimee bender or most anything by donald barthelme. "the philosophy of andy warhol" is required reading, if you haven't read it already. also, great comics like "king cat" by john porcellino or "the diary of a teenage girl" by phoebe gloeckner --the latter in particular might satisfy your memoir/female leaning, too.

it's pretty heavy though. but so gewd.

too much? :)

ANYTHING by Alice Munro...she shines a light on everything.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro...this blew me away on a non-stop flight across the United States. I think I finished it in the time it took to fly from one airport to the other...which has NEVER happened to me before or after.

Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson...a solitary life in Norway and a compelling story from the past.

Eva Moves the Furniture by Margot Livesey...ghosts!

Cormac McCarthy's The Road...this doesn't even resemble a light-hearted tale but it's quick, painful and satisfying. Well, it really ripped me up for weeks but it's like the feeling I had after watching Dancer in the Dark. I sobbed and had the worst headache but I still loved it.
