Saturday night I started reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy (of No Country For Old Men fame) for about an hour while waiting to meet up with some friends. Billy had just finished it in two days, after being told by our friend Tom that he had read it in one day and that it was possibly the best book he had ever read. Billy agreed and told me I HAD to read it. Sunday we had only lazy plans so we went to Prospect Park early and I dove back in. By 5pm that night I was a blubbering mess, the book finally closed on my lap.
So get your ass to the library or book store and find it, because it’s truly amazing. A story about a father and his son making their way down a post-apocalypse America, struggling to stay alive, I dare you to try to put it down once you start. This plot outline sounded like less than my cup of tea, but don’t let it deter you because calling it science fiction barely fits – it all seems so real and possible. I’m incredibly intrigued as to how it will translate on the big screen.
