I'm really into delicate gold rings with gemstones right now. Kate Szabone's Etsy shop is full of beautiful rings that would make really great promise rings (if you aint the marrying type or are just a really awesome significant other coughcough) or a nice (affordable) alternative to some of the traditional over the top engagement rings. Or hell, an awesome treat to yourself.

i love the look of the first rings since they're amazingly delicate, but edgy with the rough cut stones.
