A little help from my friends?
I need your help friends! Perhaps Andrea will have all the answers, but you never know. I finally took a trip to Chinatown to get a little jade plant to sit on my desk:

His name is Roger, by the way. You must name your plants, I think it makes you take better care of them. Though, tip: I used to have a plant named Margaret Thatcher and I killed her, so I guess its better to not name them after prime ministers.
Um, anyway. Roger is currently in the ugly plastic holder he came in and this must change! But a Sunday trip to every place ever left me empty handed. Perhaps its just ridiculously difficult to find pots for plants in the concrete jungle?
Constraints:
One thing that's a must is that jade plants have to have drain holes so I can't just buy a cute cup because my drilling skills scare me. Another thing to note is that I'm aware of how great of a selection Ikea has, but Ikea is an hour drive away and paying $50 to rent a car is not worth a plant pot. Also I'm leaning towards white, something kind of Jonathan Adler-ish. I don't want something my grandma would use, you know? Nothing cutesey. Modern and simple. Hell, I can't even find just a steamlined white pot. Oh and size! It's roughly 4" wide across. It's 3" tall, but I can just add more dirt because tall is cute too.
Ok, let's hear it kids. I need you. Roger needs you.
Perhaps this will also encourage more comments because we get about 200 hits a day here at For Me, For You and only 3 people regularly comment. Knowing this makes me comment more on other people's blogs. Show some love kids, show some love.
Ok, its time for me to stop rambling.

Good Morning, Good News

One of my coworkers gave me the best news I've heard all week: the beloved and much coveted A.P.C. has an outlet store now in Williamsburg, Brooklyn!! With last season styles around 60%, I can finally enjoy A.P.C. without straying so far from my usual insanely cheap clothing buying habits.

Perch
My recent travels to New Orleans brought me to the wonderfully witty and decadent home store, Perch. Below are a few photos I took, but there are more bits of inspiration on their site. I love the juxtaposition of old and new, it looked collected and fresh. I could have spent hours lingering over every detail. I took photos so I could drool over the lush interiors for as long as I like–and now you can too!

charlotte gainsbourg

I love Charlotte and was so happy to see this article about her on LA GARCONNE.
She's easily the coolest french woman around today. My first glimpse of her was in The Science of Sleep, and have since been enchanted with her sweet voice and distinctive style. She's also the creator of a new record 5:55, which is wonderfully charming.
I've also become fascinated with her mother, Jane Birkin, who inspired the insanely expensive Birkin Bag by Hermès.
Barack

Like him or not (Shepard Fairey or Barack Obama), Shepard Fairey has some rather beautiful and powerful limited edition posters of Barack Obama. The proceeds go to produce the prints for a large statewide poster campaign.
saucey

I'm always drawn to lovely little soy sauce bottles, and occasionally buy them thinking that having my soy sauce in a cute container would be really nice. But you know what? I hardly ever use soy sauce and it has to sit in the stupid fridge so they become kind of pointless. But I realized what I do use often and would be helpful in a little bottle: balsalmic vinegar! We're crazy about it and that's the only dressing we use on salad, plus it doesn't have to be in the fridge. I have this big annoying bottle, so alas I have a use for my cute soy sauce bottles.
I love this one (above) at designshop japan.
I tried to find a photo of mine at home, but Pearl River's website is terrible and only links to bad quality pdfs. Just imagine a cute little white jar with a spout.

Lettering Grows In Brooklyn

Read/see Paul Shaw's journey through Brooklyn lettering and you will gain 10 more nerd points and feel that warm and fuzzy feeling inside that found type gives you (no? not you too? oh..um..)
cool kids

It's incredibly rare to find a photographer who photographs kids in a way that interests me. But the photos of kids in Jekkyl's photostream are incredible. They're so haunting and capture the rare stillness of children.

panty party

wow, how fantastic are these undies? wondervull. I'd love to prace around my apartment listening to records in them.

coin purse

I think that coin purses are slightly unfunctional, at least for me, due to the sea of chaos that is my purse and my need for one big wallet that holds it all. But that doesn't stop me from being tempted by them! I actually had a Hayden-Harnett coin purse in my hand, in line, during christmas time at Anthropologie but I had to give it up because the line was so atrocious. It was even on sale. How different my purse would be today..
Hayden-Harnett Capri Coin Purse
Also: I can't help but think of the SNL "coin slot cream" commercial when I type the word coin purse. I hope you've all seen it, because nbc took all their youtube videos off and put them on hulu. (which I reccomend if you don't have a tv and want to watch tv, btw)
AND, there are some weird loading issues going on today on the blog. I apologize.

Apparently I'm on a cute roll. Please someone talk me out of buying these measuring cups from Three Potato Four.

Friday Quick Posts

I'm going to try to post a few things this weekend since I had to totally neglect the blog this week AND Miss Andrea Jean is on a fabulous Southern vacation right now. BUT in the meantime, here's some quick links to check out.
Yes Style: Asian online retailer you will bow to. You know how you see cute Japanese girls on the street and you wonder where the hell they get these freaking awesome clothes? Well, here's you're in. SUPER cheap and probably not the most fantastic quality, but did I mention cute, asian and cheap? Downside is everything is one size fits all, so I guess that means asian size. (aka, small)
Bjorn Copeland Interview on Fecal Face: Hot damn I love his work, I'll have to check it out the show in the Spring.
The Mid-Century, Modern Interiors Flickr Pool: I love flickr pools, and here's some eye candy for you. Some misses, but also some good hits.
chainchainchained etsy shop I want them all. Super affordable and interesting pieces.
thats all folks, have a lovely weekend!

recommended

At the tip off of jenny, I bought the boyfriend sweater at the gap and I LIVE in it now. It's super soft and goes with everything. One bummer is that the wrists have already stretched out a bit, but hopefully a wash will do the trick.
Hello cute!

days of the week barrettes @ the candystore collective.
I love things that bring me back to being a kid. We can't take ourselves too seriously all the time.
Pearls for a girl like me

I always feel like an old lady when I wear pearls, I just feel like they're not me at all. But I LOVE this ring from Abigail Percy. All beautiful pieces that are girly, but modern enough to not make you feel like you're twice your age.

it was there all along
This is a new space I created over the weekend. It always takes me a while to put all of the objects I've collected together in the right way. That's sort of the way I feel about design, just push the type around until it works. And, it rarely works the first time.
I'm also always surprised how much decorating I can do with the stuff I already own. I'm going to remember that next time I have the urge to buy some inspiration.

David Netto Design
Interior designer David Netto, knows how to make a room. I'm especially drawn to the warm neutrals combined with the just-bold-enough rugs as well as the combination of black and white picture frames.

My friend Erika, who I worked at dwell with, is in this amazing band called Au Revoir Simone and they have a new website that's really really great. We saw them at the Bowery Ballroom friday and it was amazing. I love their whole image, Billy says they're like a cartoon from the 70's-each girl with a different personality and at night they play in a band. You can listen to their music on their fantastically pretty site too.
Sorry for the lack of blogging action, I've been ca-ray-zy with work and freelance. I had today off but my ass was parked right in front of my computer all day working. The rest of the week might be spotty as well. But I'm sure Andrea will be entertainment enough for you guys:)

holly ives

i'm rarely inspired by coffee shop art, but my jaw dropped to the basement when i saw the work of holly ives at zeitgeist this morning. if you live in seattle, you must go check out her stunning work in person, my favorite piece is not online.
this may not be your thing, but rick and i have a soft spot for industrial art. you know, like levers, cranes and junk yards–we think they're awesome.

The price of being stylishly organized

I really really really want one of these vintage carousels. Sadly I don't really feel that $100+ is worth any organizer for my desk. But oh the use it would be...
LOC on Flickr

The Library of Congress has a flickr page full of copyright-free photos and there are some truly amazing photos of New York in the early 1900's that are mesmerizing me this morning.

fancy head

Bona Drag sent every lady in my office a feather hair clip and I just have to say YES! Every girl needs a little flair in her life and I'm all about these clips. Feathers accessories are getting big and I'm really excited to rock this tomorrow in my hair.

blog love

my love for you is a stampede of horses
My current favorite blog that I just discovered last week. SO much fantastic art.
Do Ho Suh
After going to the New Museum on Saturday we stopped by the Lehman Maupin gallery on Chrystie street to check out the Do Ho Suh installation, Reflection. It's a full-scale recreation of a traditional Korean gateway in his childhood home, fashioned from gossamer aqua-blue nylon-mesh. Suh never dissapoints and needless to say it was breath taking. 100 times better than anything we saw at the museum and it didn't cost a dime to see.

view from downstairs

view from upstairs
these photos aren't nearly as vibrant on my work computer as they were at home, so if they look a little dull to you the installation was actually quite intensely blue.

Michelle Segre
I finally walked my ass over the the New Museum today and my verdict was less than thrilling. Perhaps its because the current exhibition is all sculpture, using found and discarded items, something that has never really moved me much. However, the book selection in their tiny store is amazing. Despite the fact that I couldn't afford the ridiculously priced books I looked at, I kept some names in my mind, one being Michelle Segre. She's known largely for her big sculptures, but those don't impress me nearly as much as her intricate drawings.

See Swamp Eyes larger here and more drawings + sculpture here.
ps. I'm going to be rather busy next week at work, so I thought I might get a few posts in this weekend just in case I'm a bit absent next week.

DwellStudio for Target

A big ol' congrats to DwellStudio for the very soon to come launch of their line for Target, including adult and baby textiles and home furnishings. (It's going to take me forever to remember to add the 'studio' at the end of dwell). I opened my new issue of Domino to a little blurb on it (its longer and more photos in the magazine) and a misty-eyed nostalgic feeling washed over me. I can only take half credit for the baby packaging, as I left the company in the middle of the designing, but I still have a sense of pride about it. Everyone at dwell put an insane amount of work into the line with SUCH a small design team and I wish only the best for its success. I'll post more pictures once Target puts it online next month.

OH MY is right! In the mail today was the loveliest surprise, a painting by Kate. My jaw dropped and my heart fluttered – her beautiful painting was displayed immediately. I feel so lucky to have this in my house and look at it daily.
You amaze & inspire me Kate, keep it up.
p.s. sorry the light is so dim, i'll take another photo in daylight, tomorrow.
Photos
I'm feeling kind of uninspired by what I find on the internet today so I thought I'd just post some photos I finally had developed the other day. Some of them have been sitting in my camera since August. You'd never know that my New Years resolution for last year was to take more film pictures. I love my vintage Pentax that my dad got me when I was in high school at a garage sale. The owner thought it was broken but all it needed was a new battery (duh).

Ulla Johnson

I want every single piece in Ulla Johnson's Spring line. Perhaps it's the unseasonably warm 60something degree weather going on lately in New York.
I also want that model's hair.

Working Class Heroes

Taking my regular spin around etsy today lead to a fantastic discovery: Working Class Heroes. Handmade accessories of felt & leather including laptop wallets, ipod cases, and even a moleskine pouch. I love the attention to detail, the old world feel and how simple and sturdy they look. Not to mention I love love love thick felt. I'm definitely thinking of buying a laptop wallet as my poor little laptop gets a little beat up without a case.
See more at their website and shop at their etsy store.

stuff 2008

photo: storyofstuff.com
Every year, around this time, I realize how much stuff I've accumulated. When I first moved to Seattle to go to college, I had two large bags, that was it. I soon bought a futon so I could sleep a little more comfortably. I didn't accumulate too much while in school because my home was always small and I was busy creating constantly. There was just no time to buy stuff. Every year since then I try to buy less, and to do without. It is SO much harder than it sounds. Even though I'm in the industry, I am constantly swayed by good design and advertising. Just today I read this great article by Paul Graham posted by the lovely and talented swissmiss, and am SO inspired to aquire less and make more in 2008.
Here's a bit I found interesting:
"Another way to resist acquiring stuff is to think of the overall cost of owning it. The purchase price is just the beginning. You're going to have to think about that thing for years—perhaps for the rest of your life. Every thing you own takes energy away from you."
In addition to this article I found this video (pictured above) fascinating and important, via swissmiss.
Back in action...slowly..
Getting back into the swing of things is proving to be difficult. I had 2 weeks off, which I'm greatful for, but good lord its 60 degrees out today and 65 tomorrow! I want THIS week off instead of last week.
Anyway, 2 of my favorite (and well, only) christmas presents were from people who clearly know me well.

1st: Hand Job, A Catalog of Type from Lauren. This book is even more awesome than I thought it would be! I could sit and look at it for hours, but then I just get really jealous and have to put it down for a bit. Really really awesome, thank you Lauren.

2nd: Arkitip Magazine Packaged with an Arkitip + Parra + Loomstate Organics reusable tote bag. Not only is the magazine full of amazing art that I'll share soon, but it was wrapped in this freaking awesome tote bag that I barely leave the house with lately. This was seriously the most fantastic and most ME gift that someone has given me in a long time that I was totally unaware of existing and didn't specifically ask for. I have the best boyfriend ever:)
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday, let the posting resume!

Hey guys, I wasn't trying to shamelessly promote my portfolio today, but was transfering the blog over to a new server and forgot one stupid step, causing the blog to forward to my portfolio. Sorry for interupting your ability to come here and see when the hell we'll actually be posting.
Which will begin soon!
p.s. happy birthday to andrea!
