What is the world coming to

Does anyone else find it slightly disturbing that for a mere $20 you can get a CNN headline printed on a t-shirt? For instance, today one was "terrorists : why we want to kill you" or perhaps you'd like to get "4-year-old found along highway" on a shirt?

You can't make this shit up folks. Whoa.

Did I mention I like bears?

I don't ever have the need to remove staples, but I'd proudly display this guy on my desk and needlessly staple things just to use him.

via wrong distance.

Pixel Pour

Apparently this jem by artist Kelly Goeller was in the east village on 9th st, which I frequently walk on, so I have no idea how I missed it!

See its progression of there, tagged (seriously against basic Graf respect rules!), and gone here.

Portishead makes things EVEN better

The new Portishead album, Third, came out yesterday! Are you as excited as me? I'd have to name Beth Gibbons as one of my top 5 greatest musical influences of all time. If Portishead is a little too weird for you and you want something slower, I recommend her solo album, which is very underrated and you MUST give it a listen if you haven't.

white space wednesday

This our dog Oscar. He's normally sweet and somewhat passive for a boston terrier–but not when it comes to running with sticks!

Check out the rest of the White Space Wednesday flickr pool, it's great.

Miranda makes it better

Coming back from vacation to a work tornado aint cool folks. I hope this Blonde Redhead video featuring my favorite lady (as you all know) Miranda July will due as a stand in for a substantial post.

Thanks to Shirley for the link. Somehow I'd never seen this before.

TRKFLD

One of my favorite things about summer is that I can carry around a colorful bag and not feel slightly ridiculous. This may seem like strange logic, but I know I'm not alone in this thought process. If you're one of those people, you can get colorful and proud these totally rad bags by TRKFLD (pronounced Track and Field). My favorites are the Emily, Koneval (both shown above) and Luu styles. They're not super cheap, but they're also not what I'd call expensive and seem very well made. I see beach trip written all over some of these babies.

Ok, please can it stop raining?

Amelie Chabannes

Yesterday on our way to "Billy Has A New Job So Nice Clothes Are Needed Shopping Trip" we stopped into two galleries on Stanton St and saw two really great shows. First up is French artist Amelie Chabannes, who had a few different types of work on display, but what caught my attention the most were here watercolors. I love how detailed and haunting they are, and watercolor is such a hard to please me medium.

I'll tell you more about the other artist later, I'm trying to get some photos from her.

technical difficulties

ps. I have no idea what the hell is going on, but the header and background image here is not working. Sorry it looks so ugly if this is your first time visiting! I swear it's cute usually.

edit: Ok, back on track today kids! I had the background images hosted on an old domain for some reason, so when I recently deleted all those files, obviously they wouldn't work here anymore! Amazing.

Hobo Love

I completely forgot to include in my souvenir picture the best one of all: my new Hobo Nancy wallet. Mine is actually black, but for some reason I can't find the black one online anywhere so you'll just have to use your imagination on the white one (which is super cute too but I cannot be trusted with white bags/wallets). It is seriously the best wallet I've ever owned, plus it was 20 bucks cheaper at the rad little store Andrea took me to that I bought it at (help me out here Andrea, do you remember what that place was called?!) Plus today I figured out that there's a little leather handle that slips out of the side in case you want to use it as a clutch! That combined with the paisley coin purse built inside makes me love Hobo even more than before.

Highly reccomended!

Souvenirs

Back to work and it is Crazy with a capitol C, so this may be my only post today. Souvenirs from Seattle, mostly brought to you by the glorious wonder that is Target. Plus a Heath vase from Andrea and some ridiculously huge sunglasses from the other wonder known as The Mall.

It's good to be home, its SO warm. Ok, maybe a little too warm since we don't have an a/c unit yet and last night was restless to say the least, but it may just be the initial shock of going from 40something to ohmygodisitseriously80?

I've missed you all. Normality to resume here as soon as I get a chance.

Today was filled with my fantastic niece, Melissa. She is hands down the sweetest child I've ever met. Can I borrow one please?

Monday

Waking up in Andrea's sweet guest bedroom to no bothersome family members was pretty fantastic this morning.

I'm off to my dad's house now!

Sunday

Finally the good part of the vacation happened and Andreeaaaaaa!!!! This is when we went to Trophy Cupcakes and ate til we were sick.

We had the most fantastic time and even met the fabulous Jasmine Park of Pike/Pine in person when we ran into her at Impulse. This is one damn small city my friends.

Saturday

My grandparents have a hideous portrait of themselves from the 70's in their bedroom someone made for them..I believe it's a chalk drawing.

Friday

I can count the times on my fingers that I've seen snow in Seattle in my life, and I come home to this.

Heimstone

Did Heimstone crawl into my head and make dresses based on exactly what I love? This is the Autumn collection, but thats ok because I'm no season snob.

I'm off to Seattle my friends! I'm going to try to post a photo a day as a pathetic subsitution for posting, but they may not happen until Monday:) I'll miss you all! Andrea, here I come!

Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger

I've never been to the Folk Art Museumm here before because I'm unapologetically just not that moved by Folk Art. But now I'm intrigued by the new show there Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger that showcases Henry Darger influenced artists. What a creepy, brilliant man he was*.

Though a part of me wonders if making art in the style of Henry Darger is like saying you write in the style of Chuck Palahniuk?

Either way, I'm going to check it out.

*I was totally joking about him being a pedophile but I can see how it was offensive. I love his work. I apologize.

Etsy Find of the Day: erinmriley

This week is turning out to be innnsane due to me leaving for Seattle on Friday on what shaped up to be the busiest time ever to take a damn vacation. So posts may be scarce for a week. And then posting in Seattle will be near impossible unti I'm to my dads house next week.

So anyway! Here's my etsy pick friends.

I'm really into ikat and native prints right now. I'm on a hunt for an affordable ikat print dress and I'm a little surprised that Forever 21 or H&M hasn't knocked anyone off yet on that trend. But I do love these ikat print scarves in Erin M Riley's etsy store. Handwoven and hand dyed, they're perfect for these last few months of randomly chilly weather in Spring and they're so so so beautiful. They're not the best photos, but you get the picture.

this makes me happy

Because i'm addicted to chairs (blue art studio):
I think well-designed chairs are like logos of the furniture world, immediately recognizable icons with an added benefit of a comfortable place to rest. I love collecting them, and, there's always room for one more chair.

Friendship Bracelets: I'm serious

I wasn't kidding. I went to K-Mart on Saturday and bought a friendship bracelet kit, and so it begins. I'm working on a totally rad one right now for one of you lucky kids who shall remain nameless for surprise purposes, but seriously guys, lets do this shit.

Bear Charm

I've probably told at least 18 of you how I'm completely obsessed with bears right now. If it weren't such a busy week I'd give you a full-blown bear round up with all my favorite bear things that are out there right now, but that will have to wait. But for now, I give you the raddest necklace this side of the Rocky's that I've seen.

Yesterday my friend Lauren and I decided to check out Brooklyn Flea and while I wasn't super impressed, it was still fun and there were a handful fantastic things there, including this bear charm necklace from Loyalty and Blood. I've heard of them before through My Love For You Is a Stampede of Horses but their charm necklaces don't really seem to be on their etsy shop. Lauren got a little pig charm and for an extra 5 bucks you could get another loose charm so she got this really awesome saw charm that I wish I'd bought as well.

Top Shop, I'm waiting patiently

"Topshop has set October 10 as the opening date for its New York flagship in Soho. And the countdown begins." -NY Magazine

How fitting they should open on my birthday. Happy birthday to me, I cannot effing wait!

Here's what I'd buy if it were open here now:

Friendship Bracelets

Ray Fenwick's paintings of friendship bracelets on old book covers are making me realy nostalgic and now I have a huge huge huge urge to make some. I cannot tell you how obsessed I was with making them as a kid.

The shirt that broke the ban

Guys, I'm semi-sad to report that I broke my shopping ban today. BUT, it ended tomorrow anyway and look how CUTE this shirt is. And cheap. And it was 73 degrees out so walking around and shopping on my lunch break called to me.

The shopping ban proved to be funny because all I did was buy other things instead, like dinners, ram for my computer, and booze. But I guess all those things don't collect inside my closet so it wasn't a total bust.

Etsy Find of the Day: Chigal

Sadly my bad vision is starting to plummet towards it's death to the point that I have to get glasses again. I used to wear them in Seattle for driving, but haven't touched them in the near-3 years I've lived in New York because I drive a car about as often as I floss my teeth.
But I'm so blaaahh about everything out there. A friend of mine (actually, Erika from Au Revoir Simone- have I mentioned how obsessed I am?) got these fucking adorable vintage glasses and had an optometrist fit lenses for her. So I went trolling around my old friend Etsy and found a pretty awesome store with rad vintage glasses, Chigal. And if you're not vision-challenged, they have a few really hot vintage sunglasses. Something else to note is that they have really great photos of all the glasses, something that a lot of etsy store lack in that makes a huge difference!

Need some very short responses

Hey guys, my magically amazingly talented bff Ian is doing a readying/performance that he says: "The whole thing is something of an experiment in authorship and emergent complexity." (don't ask, this crazy guy always has something up his sleeve that confuses me) and needs people's responses to this question:

"What needs to change?" Answer any way you wish, but each response should be no more than 15 words, and shorter's better. Multiple responses are great. They don't necessarily have to be deeply considered-- feel free to reply with something off the top of your head.

Help a brotha out! Look how adorable he is up there! I'm sending him responses Thursday night.

Thanks!

Andrew Holder

Andrew Holder's Owls on vintage slides are so great.

Andrew found via vic, a really awesome blog btw.

Summer Jumper

Maybe it's because I have a sudden urge to skip this crappy up and down Spring weather and jump right to you-predictably-know-it's-going-to-be-fucking-hot summer, or maybe I'm just ready for a 360 in my wardrobe, but I want this cute little jumper (I would not wear it with that shirt though) to bum around in during the summer. I'm pretty sure I lived in a baggier more classic overall version of it in elementary school.

I was just telling someone how old I feel lately because fashion that I remember wearing consciously (not things my mother picked out) is coming back from the early to mid-nineties. Example: I saw a high school hipster girl wearing a velvet baby doll dress the other day. If people start dressing like Blossom more I'm going to die.

White Space Wednesday

It took me a long time to decide whether or not this was pushing the white space envelope since the floor is actually kind of busy, but after much thought I decided it was totally white space.

beardy mcbeardson

I've never had a thing for beards or even really thought about them much, until recently. I think the first interesting beards were ashleyg's great bearded men drawings. they are so cute, how can you not love them? Also, some partial beardery- (that's a new word, you can use it.) clever carved mustaches from something's hiding in here. Not to mention Kate's latest find: the bearded alphabet.

And now, for me to add to the mix: a bearded men nesting doll set. Yep, that's right, I found it at an antique store and gave it to Rick as a gift for Christmas last year. Charming isn't it?

Etsy Find of the Day: Mikishmink

Super cute coinpurses from Etsy seller Mikishmink in Japan. I like the way they fold open and the fabric is ridiculously cute. I like to use the word "cute" when describing Japanese things - if you haven't noticed.

It took me like 6 hours to find today's Etsy Find. Have I mentioned I'm ready for my vacation? Plus my shopping ban is in it's final days until it's been officially a month, so I'm going nuts you guys.

Beards vs Baby Hamsters

beard font by Tim Yarzhombek. It's a bit hard to read, but it's a friggin beard font people, and nothing is better than beards. Except maybe a baby hamster eating brocolli?

quality stuff today folks, quality stuff.

I heart Human Giant

I'm supaa busy today so until I have a minute to post today's etsy find, I give you something to make you laugh. I think Human Giant is the funniest thing on television right now. This video made Billy and I laugh til we cried because Billy's favorite joke ever that he tells at least once a month is "What's the worst thing about being a rollerblader? Having to tell your parents you're gay".

ps. if the youtube video is being stupid and not working here, double click the image to watch on youtube. Embedding videos is being wacky lately.

Hell Yes

Did you guys know that Spize Jonze is directing a film adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are?!

I've been an obsessive Maurice Sendak fan since my grandma first took me to see the Nutcracker when I was 5 (he did all the set design for the Pacific Northwest Ballet's version- absolutely amazing) and my mom's nightly readings of Where The Wild Things Are to my brother.

can't
wait

Homesick

I'm incredibly homesick lately. I suppose that's ok because in less than 2 weeks I go back to the motherland and I'll probably long for New York after 2 days of my family:) But there have been a few Seattle things that have tugged on my heart a bit lately.

The image above was taken by my friend Micah.

And here's Andrea's photo of the industrial district.

And this lovely lady is from the Pike/Pine Seattle street fashion blog. She's standing in the grocery store that Micah and I spent more time in college at eating things like half pies and burritos than probably necessary.

And this is a photo from a camping trip my dad took me on to La Push in the Washington rain forest nearly 3 years ago before I moved to New York. It may not be warm, but it's one of the best beaches I've ever been to in my life.

I heart you, Miranda

I saw Miranda July wandering around The Whitney today at the Whitney Biennial. Due to the fact that I have a serious girl crush on her and I think she is one of the most fantastic "famous" people on earth, this was hands down my best celeb sighting so far in New York. And I ate dinner across from Woody Harrelson once folks.

So anyway, check out the Biennial if you can, because it's really great-despite all its bad reviews!

you do what you can

A few weekends ago I got a can of paint out to do minor touch-ups around the house–such as painting the light switches and electrical outlets–which led to me painting all of the ugly 80's oak pieces in our bathroom. It's definitely a temporary solution, but I'm quite happy with what a can of paint and new door knobs can do. The real remodel will come much later, i'm afraid.

On a related note, this Decorno post made me feel much better about the state of my house. I love how she personifies her house, it's the absolute best! I have yet to determine the gender of my house.

It's all I want as well...

Kitsune Noir Desktop Wallpaper

For some reason I'm really into changing my desktop wallpaper all the time. I like it to look good, what can I say? I love these desktop wallpapers from Kitsune Noir, especially Mike Perry's illustrations. So make your desktop pretty, as it should be.

Thanks!

I just want to thank Alison at Etsy for the shout out in her Storque article yesterday! I'm sure you can all imagine how flattered I am, being an etsy addicted maniac.

I also have to thank her for introducing me to this blog: What Claudia Wore", a Babysitters Club mecca of nostalgia. I haven't laughed that hard in a while.

those crazy danish

i know they're crazy, because i'm one of them. i have a slight obsession with denmark and all things danish. i've only ever been to the copenhagen airport, but was impressed that the floors were beautiful hardwoods! i've promised myself to go back and visit someday. in an attempt to visit via the web (lame, i know.) i discovered this awesome photo by pirr of a deer park near copenhagen. what a brilliant idea – 2500 deer hanging out in a safe haven and you can visit them!

let's go there!

Etsy Find of the Day: Orno

I love this wooden jewelry trend that's not going away! Orno has some beautiful exotic wood jewelry that I'm loving. I'm especially in love with the necklace below, and I think that the earrings would make me feel like I'm on a tropical vacation and not slaving away for the man in the concrete jungle. ahem.

Etsy Find of the Day: Argyle Whale

I'm super busy today and would like to spend my lunch break walking around in this amazing weather, so this is all for me today, unless I remember to post my white space wednesday photo when I get home later tonight.

So, I bring you my etsy pick that should have came yesterday: Argyle Whale. How cute is the pile of guinea pigs? And my favorite is the story of what is going on with the nom nom nom drawing: her bunnies ate part of the paper. I smile because whenever Billy and I see animals eating something and we think it's funny we saw in unison "num num num!" because when you're in a serious relationship you adopt really retarded embarassing phrases and inside jokes that embarass your friends and cause people to roll their eyes at you for being so disgustingly cute. If you and your significant other don't have anything like that you're probably not truly in love. Sorry to be the one to tell you that.

For Me, For You Cribs: Roger the jade plant

You'll all be pleased to know that Roger finally has some sweet digs. Thanks, pearl River!

ps. I'm trying to get you an etsy find but etsy is mysteriously not working right no! I don't know what is up, if it's my internet or etsy's server going crazy. It might have to wait til tomorrow:(

we heart it

I'm really excited about we heart it. It's basically the same concept as ffffound.com, only anyone can join. It's a place to save all the imagery that inspires you, and something ffffound doesn't support: videos you love.

So cool.
