Movies I Loved

This past week has been movie mania for me. Here are my suggestions:

Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, The Mistress and The Tangerine. I'd love to embed the trailer but it's been disabled on youtube for this video (lame). So just click here. I knew zip about Louise before Billy talked me into seeing this, and now I want to see everything she's ever made and read everything about her. Her retrospective is at the Guggenheim here as well and if you go see the film at the Film Forum your ticket stubs get you two for one admission at the museum! I can't wait to go. This film was well worth sitting in front of a crazy woman who sang along to all the French songs and a woman in front of me who talked to herself half of the film.

Persepolis:

If you didn't see this when it was in theaters, it just came out on dvd last week, so get on it because it's not only a facinating history lesson on Iran, but an animated beauty. I would like to make every teenager who bitches about their life watch this (including my past me).

Nouvomondo (The Golden Door):

A breathtaking Italian film about a poor Italian farmer's journey to America in the early 1900s, featuring everyone's favorite girl crush, Charlotte Gainsbourg. This is the first time I've watched a movie by myself in a long time, and I think it was perfect for that because it's very slow and subtle so paying close attention and being able to cry without feeling like a wimp is key. The last scene floored me, as did the many things I learned about immigration back then that I never knew.

Mankind Mag

I'm sure you all already know about this, but it would be a crime for me to not mention that Design For Mindkind released Mankind Mag today (in pdf format and the latest news is that it's available in print as well!). Check it out, I'm very very VERY excited to read it!! Congrats, Erin!

3 Days of Shopping Ban Blogging

Hello friends, I hope you all had a great weekend! I feel like the last 2 weekends before this one I completely wasted it by being lazy and getting too drunk, but this weekend I finally was back to going out and seeing art, and getting things done. I saw a great show at both locations of the Deitch Projects that I highly reccommend- Os Gemeos on Wooster St (insane installation covering every inch of the gallery) and Constraction on Grand St. I didn't get any photos because it was so packed and I was so overwhelmed, but I wish I had because it was a serious fashion show...which is good and bad. ha.

But above is another amazing piece by one of my favorite artists, Do Ho Suh at Lehmann Maupin (which is decidedly my favorite gallery) which wasn't even the main focus of the gallery, but took my breath away.

So, this all brings me to my next point: the theme in this week's blogging. This week I'm taking an oath to not blog about shopping. It's a very short blogging week as I'm going upstate Thursday and Friday, but that's good because I'm not sure I'm capable of not blogging about things you can buy for 5 whole godamn days! There are two reasons I've come to this decision:
1. I'm broke. I just went a little crazy lately and need to calm the hell down and have no temptations!
2. My good friend Lauren told me that my blog has influenced her spending way too much lately and seemed genuinely annoyed that she could not control herself sometimes after reading my suggestions and your comments suggestions. While a person should be responsible for their own self control, Lauren has been kicking ass on the Weight Watchers diet for months now and I'm very proud of her self control in that aspect so I'll give the girl some slack on shopping. Plus who the heck am I to talk about self control?

So this week I bring you no mention of shopping, scout's honor. I'll bring you recipes (food shopping doesn't count), art, music, and..um...inspiration! Yeah. Plus 2 days of silence. And if Andrea stops by with any shopping posts, that is just fine because I miss her posts too much to ask her to abide the ban:)

Summer Pefection

Perfect Summer Song - Baby Don't Go

I've heard this song 3 times in the last 2 days in random stores. This can only mean that it's a perfect summer song, and I welcome hearing it everywhere I go. I had no idea it was a Sonny & Cher song until now! Look how hot she was! I apologize if this video makes you feel like you're on acid in the middle. It was the '60s, what can I say?

This fits perfectly with my obsessive listening to She & Him.

I think this calls for a new muxtape mix!

bff necklaces

Like the friendship bracelet, I think the best friends necklace needs to be brought back. I vividly remember my first bff necklace I shared with my friend Jill, in 5th grade. She was mormon (as were all my friends back then, to my athiest parents dismay) so the necklace had some mormon scripture on the back. Hilarious. After an exhausting search online, there are a lot of shitty cheap versions out there, one hideous Juicy Couture version that comes up all over, and 2 fantastic versions worth a damn:

More Tom Hemmerick

Tom updated his flickr with some amazing new pieces a month ago, but due to the fact that I occasionally have the memory of a 4 year old and it being bookmarked on my computer was clearly not enough of a reminder for me, I present them to you now.

I think he should make some little prints of these, no?

Moonblood

After I saw Alyson of unruly things wearing this shirt, I had to know where it was from because it was so damn cool.

Apparently it's from moonblood and they have a bunch of other rad shirts. I love the wolf heads on the models. There are a lot on sale too! I highly appreciate a graphic t-shirt that looks a little more grown up and interesting than the hoards that are out there.

Totokaelo

Hold onto your hats, Seattle's Impulse boutique now has an online shop & community called Totokealo. This is extremely exciting news.
However, the strange thing is that you have to request a membership to join the site and they hand-pick people. They say:
Totokaelo is not elitist. We are about creating an original online shopping experience through hand-picking members that have something in common.

I think this walks a very thin line of not awesome and totally awesome. What do you think?

UPDATE I've just been informed by a fabulous reader that people are not handpicked, but everyone is accepted! I'm quite confused now. How very strange!

Occasionally I blog about things other than sandals..but not today

As much as I wanted the Matt Bernson sandals at Bird the minute I talked myself into them they were sold out in my size. I was hanging out with some friends on Friday and a friend of a friend was wearing them, like some sort of hilarious tease. I said "are those Matt Bernson sandals?" and she looked at me, slightly puzzled and said, "oh I don't know....". She reached down and pulled her sandal to her face to peer onto the insole and said, "Wow, yes they are, how the hell did you know that?"
Then everyone looked at me- the girls like, "oh you know your fashion, girl" and the boys like, "billy, your girlfriend has a shopping problem, huh?"

So that tangent leads me to the sandals I bought instead, that were half the price and are hot hot hot. I wore them all 2 miles home and they were heavenly comfortable. The gold front makes them spectacularly interesting, and if you aren't into a brown sandal they come in black. It was very hard for me to decide which color to get, I wish it wouldn't be ridiculous of me to own both colors.

$50 at Urban Outfitters
, who I swore I wouldn't buy sandals from again, but these were not there cheap, hung on the hangers all over the store kind. I can instantly tell they are of higher quality and comfort.

And that, my friends, was the longest story about a pair of shoes ever documented at For Me, For You. Maybe.

my favorite duvet cover ever by dwellstudio

The name is rather fitting

The two pairs of summer sandals I own from last year are crapping out on me, so I went to my favorite shoe store, Shoegasm (don't laugh), and got this sweet pair. I walked 30 minutes through a rainstorm and they didn't hurt me for one minute. What I love about Shoegasm is that nothing is over $100, they stock great brands like Dolce Vita alongside smaller brands you can't find at many other places. Most of them are great quality too. Such a bang for your buck, you have to check them out if you come to NY.

something's hiding in here shop update!

something's hiding in here just updated their always fabulous etsy shop with new wood rings! I was just going to email them to see if they were selling any this very day!

I'm quite sad the top one is a size 9:(

baby baby baby

My love for bears has not backed down one bit, so I'm sure you can imagine the squeal that came out of me when I came across this baby bear ring by Ach Ach Liebling.

The squeal was similar to the noise I made when I saw this on cute overload and watched this video of my adorable niece yesterday.

Well played Zara

There's a Zara by my work on 5th ave, and it sucks. It's full of hideous clothing that I picture girls with boring desk jobs and dress codes shopping at. But the always fabulous boboniaa occasionally notes in her wardrobe remix photos that pieces are from Zara. So I gave the Zara in Soho a chance and scored big time with this awesome shirt in their TRF collection (which I gathered was like a younger-oriented line). I can't find a photo online so here's mine (aka why I was late for work this morning). $25 and totally not chain-store looking.

Rock on Zara.

PS. The dinner last night was a serious success! It turned out so ridiculously good, highly recommended.

Adventures in being a grown up

I'm a pretty terrible cook. Or, perhaps more fairly to myself I'll say I'm a simple cook and I make stupid beginner mistakes. I have no idea how to spice things, when things are done cooking, how to chop a vegetable to save my life, the list goes on and on. You can't blame me though, it's not that I just never cared to learn, I just never had anyone to learn from. As a child my mother's favorite meal for dinner was a giant bowl of cereal. I cannot even recall how many times I ate Fruity Pebbles for dinner, there were too many times to count. My childhood food pyramid should have had a box of cereal at the very top. Another favorite was McDonalds, Hamburger Helper, and disgusting dishes like corned beef and stroganoff. I'd ask if we could buy fruit and my mom would usually deny me because I was the only one in the house who ate it, so it would go bad. I was so god damn lucky I had the most incredibly metabolism as a kid. So who can blame me for not knowing how to put together a meal?

So I've decided that my goal this summer is to learn how to cook better. To cook things that I'm not mortified to put in front of people, to be inventive, to make things that are delicious. My friend Emily grew up in a completely opposite household as I did, her mother taught cooking classes and she had the all-American family dinners every night. She is such a kick ass cook and I am completely embarrassed for her to even look at anything I've cooked. She is my cooking inspiration, for sure.

Something awesome I just stumbled upon is 101 Cookbooks, a recipe journal by a girl with a huge cookbook collection who blogs about her favorite recipes (largely vegetarian). I am so making this Baked Pasta Casserole(photo above) tonight. Sounds easy. Baby steps my friends, baby steps.

Definitely not a sack, sack dress

I dig the new line at Pixie Market by Natalie Encarnita. Especially the Tallulah sack dress. I hate when they're called "sack dresses" but let's just ignore that.

Let's see a close up of the sexy, sexy side.

Make Believe Vacation

, originally uploaded by dooce.

Recently I completely jinxed myself as if I were in some hilarious sitcom by telling people about my easy, never busy, always get to leave on time job. This was when I decided that I loved my job for said reason. Then last week like some cruel Seinfield-esque episode of my life, work became really, really busy- took a two day break and is back on strong. It's summer, don't people know that?

I'm just going to gaze into my favorite classic blogger's photo, Dooce, of her Florida vacation view. Let's all do it together...take a deep breath and pretend we're there. Ahhhhhhh yes...

Current Obsession

Stripey dresses, especially that nice chevron.

Left: Urban Outfitters, Right: Dallin Chase (via The Shiny Squirrel)

Mistakes Were Made

This is one of the best episodes of This American Life that I've listened to in a long time. I'm kind of a Sarah Vowell addict and like to search for episodes she contributes to, so I stumbled upon it that way even though it's not new. (side note: she's barely in the epsidode)

I guarantee you will say "whoa" at the end of the first act. For real.

Here's a taste:
"It's the late 1960s, and in the new technology of cryonics, a California TV repairman named Bob sees an opportunity to help people cheat death. But freezing dead people so scientists can reanimate them in the future is a lot harder than it sounds. Harder still was admitting to the family members of people Bob had frozen that he'd screwed up. Badly."

I know, right?

William Steinman

I'm ridiculously excited to finally share with you the work of the man I plan to spend the rest of my life with, Mr. William Steinman. His work is finally done being photographed, and after a day of being banished to my computer until it was done, we're launching his portfolio site at WilliamSteinman.com. Shown here are my 3 favorite pieces. Because I didn't want to butcher the mans thoughts on his work with my own words, I told him to share them with you himself:

"I make work about advertising I find in 1980's circa comic books. It began with finding and altering comic book ads I would remember as a kid. Then moving away from painting and more into collage and printmaking, I began working more specifically in two areas.

One with photographed faces of men in sunglasses. Odd when you first hear it, but it became very obvious to me right away in my searching, that i would be able to find many images of the style. These male gazes invoking a sense of paranoia and at the same time changes each appropriated image.

The other series, The Red works are all collages of red muscle, skin and hair for comic book super heros. I chose this banal part of each super hero for its exaggeration when blown up and for the way the illustrator always paid less attention to its details.

I live in the Lower East Side and i am in love with Kathleen Miss."

All the little final details of the site will be done later this week, but I was much too excited to wait until then! Check out the work on the site, because flickr kind of butchered the color in these babies.

Renegade Sadness

I'm quite sad I missed the Renegade Craft Fair over the weekend. I had some crazy idea in my head that it wasn't worth the trek to Williamsburg (how can a place be so close to me yet so impossible to get to?) but after seeing the coverage over at Design*Sponge a tear rolls down my face presently. This is almost as bad as missing the A.P.C blow-out sale a month ago that a coworker told me was incredible. Saturday I was trying to get a tan at the beach and sometimes I just curl up into a blob on the weekend (um, Sunday), and I was banished to the apartment designing something (that I'll show you later today) for Billy so I'll just use that excuse.

So anyway, as much as I'm almost to the point of puking at the sight of mustache-things, I secretly still love them to death and am smitten with this moustache key holder by Ben Floeter. I would probably use it for necklaces because I only own one set of keys and if I don't put them in my purse I will forget them.

Tinbot

Of all the 8 billion iPod cases out there, the various ones I've owned through the years have always ended up annoying me because when I use my iPod I like it out of the case. What I need is something super sturdy to protect it from my keys and general over-stuffed zoo of a bag. I like the idea of these Tinbots, covered with designs by various artists, that are easy to pop open the sturdy case but you can also use your iPod while they're inside. I LOVE the one by Parra- one of my favorite artists, and Sket One. I'd love to see some other artists added to the lineup.

M*A*S*H

OMG M*A*S*H!

I'm pretty sure I spent half my childhood playing this game. Ah, the internet.

ps. God, please do not let me have 3 children.

Mike Nemire show this Friday

Our friend Mike Nemire is having a solo show at Galeria Janet, opening this Friday. I saw his MFA show at Pratt and it was pretty mind-blowing (literally, they make your head spin a little). I think his press release explains it well:

As abstractions dealing with subtle gradations of color and saturation, Mike Nemire’s painting is rooted in a Minimalist tradition exemplified by Gene Davis and Kenneth Noland. Yet, in the form and structure of these grids in his painting, Nemire also aptly references a contemporary shift in recording visual information marked by digital media, in particular photography. His paintings make visually palpable what can only be conceptualized—the idea of pixels, the common denominator for virtually recording a reality that bypasses the former process involving a hysical imprint of light on film.

The opening reception is from 7-9pm in Greenpoint, 205 Norman Ave. I'll be there!

Seattle Summer

This weekend, Seattle proved it still had some Summer days to give us. While it's not the sweltering and humid heat I grew up with, I'm quite fond of the mid 70's in the Northwest.

I'd love to enjoy our weather in this outfit from a recent Sartorialist post.

Want

Bird has a few sandals on sale that are still not cheap by any means, but quality sandals that I want a lot. A LOT. Like these beauties. My cheap urban outfitters sandals are already falling apart after only owning them for maybe 3 weeks. Will I ever learn my lesson? Probably not, my mother instilled a serious sense of thrifyness in me and I grew up dirt poor. I can't help it!

thanks for temping me, renee.

Randoms

Margot, originally uploaded by Doxiementary.

Doxiementary is the best flickr page ever. EVER. The cuteness knocks me over everytime.

Anyway. Here are some random things from my week.

1. yesterday I woke up to 10 bug bites all over my feet, my feet look awful.

2. I have spilled something on myself every day this week. The woman who's office is across from the kitchen at work swears she hasn't witnessed this, but I told her she didn't have to be nice, I know she thinks I'm a jackass. This includes soup, creamer, coffee, ice, cereal, and orange juice.

3. I started eating meat again (well, no red meat, I'm not planning on venturing into that) for the first time in 6 years. (with the exception of eating fish for a year and half) I forgot how mexican food could be so good. And sandwiches. And soup. And pizza.

4. Monday I will be launching something very exciting for the love of my life.

New Zealand National Jewellery Showcase

Lane sent me a really great list of jewelry (er..jewellery to them) designers that she loved at the National Jewellery Showcase in New Zealand. This matchstick ring by David McLeod was definitely my favorite. Want!

Here are her other picks (her comments in parenthesis):

Fine
These aren't really my thing but there are some crazy designs:

Contemporary

http://www.michel.co.nz/michel1thpage.htm (his rings are better than
his other stuff, imo)
http://www.sed.co.nz/Jewellery.htm (unfortunately the pics really suck
but they were amazing in person)
http://www.lrjewellerydesign.com (my friend, whose website and the
photos on it don't do her justice... but her earrings are rad. I also
love her continuous loop ring.)

Lane, you are the bestest.

hello, you little tiger.

hello, you little tiger., originally uploaded by mirjan..

You guys have to check out MuxFind, which is basically a super easy way to search through muxtapes to find what you want to listen to. So for instance, today I'm at work and because The Man won't let me have itunes on my computer here so I have no music, I just search for what I want to listen to and since there are so many effing Muxtapes, I can find it.

Bag Love

I stood in Forever 21 for a good 10 minutes deciding whether or not I should buy this purse. In the end I decided no, but I think had it been $15 I would have, because I'm weird like that.
But it is quite cute.

We got these Mexican Market Bags for something at work today (the yellow ones we had were the best) and I squealed over how much I wanted one. Sadly there were no extras, because that would have been a damn fine beach bag!

And lastly, someone please snatch up this incredibly priced beautiful Etienne Aigner bag on Etsy. I really, really shouldn't.

back from my me-cation

I've missed blogging, more than I thought I would. I've missed the sharing and the exchange of ideas. And now, I'm going to brave the commitment again. Although, I must say, Kate is exceptional at holding up this fort all by herself. Want some company again, buddy?

My long absence from blogging was due to my need for some very "me" time. I started to feel uninspired, which, as a creative type is equal to death. So, I've literally been back to the drawing board, sketching. I'm trying to weave my fine art background and graphic design one together. Or, at least, practice them both equally again.

I'm working on a new website too, more on that soon.
And now, back to you.

Stressed

eyebllz, originally uploaded by jessicagring.

I wish I was blogging more, but things are a bit stressful right now. A lot of friends I know are feeling a bit off and stressed as well. I think every time the seasons abruptly change I'm thrown off my axis in bout of uncreative land.

I'll be back to normalcy soon. Plus this blog is missing dear Andrea, but she has a good excuse and shall return soon.

Also, something is wrong with my server and randomly stops this site from working. I apologize, I'm working with my host to get this shiz figured out soon!

Happy Mail Day

My leather store bag and my Kahiko Vintage jumper both came at the exact same time yesterday. It was like Christmas.

They are both totally fantastic. AND, I forgot to show you all the super awesome vintage necklace I bought on ebay for a sweet $4

It's Washington state with a little gold apple. (bigger version here)

I love getting things in the mail when I'm broke that I bought when I had money.

Busy day again, perhaps more posts when I get home!

I can haz new iphone?

Drool!

Steve Jobs just announced the next generation iPhone.
Highlights:

3G (significantly faster)
GPS
$199 for 8Gb, $299 for $16Gb
Available July 11th worldwide
Only AT&T domestically
Basically the same design but with a black plastic back with metal buttons on the edges.

It's still not something I have extra money to blow on, but SO much more obtainable once my stupid Tmobile contact runs out.

I'm so busy at work lately I think my ass has molded to a new shape: my chair. And even if I wasn't so busy I'd barely be posting here because it's 100 degrees here and our a/c is broken here. At home we have a little guy in the bedroom, so I'm confined to laying on the bed pathetically sprawled out. I'm still not used to hot summers. I wilt.
