Letters

Letters, originally uploaded by Allan Deas.

I wish I had a big huge loft and these big old letters to hang up on the walls. Swoon!

Kind of reminds me of the sign yard I came across in Arizona.

Perfectly Healthy Stalking

I've discovered that my girl crush Louise has a blog! Now I can see more of her fantastic outfits and contemplate whether or not I've crossed into creep-territory. I'll also contemplate dying my hair red and buying bigger nerd glasses, and wish I was French at least...10 times a day. At least.

thank you Porcelain Garden for bringing this to my attention.

Finally, a sweet ebay victory

So the early birthday present I was going to share with you did not pan out and will have to be acquired on my actual birthday (the wait will be worth it!) but I did buy myself an early birthday present this weekend. Vintage Frye Campus boots, holla! I've been trying to get my paws on these for these for a long, long time.

Awesome Subscriptions

I often find it very hard to see the benefit of paying a lump sum up-front for things, but here are two new subscriptions I can totally get down with:

1. Pretty Little Things Club: Jordan of Oh Happy Day sends you a pretty little thing every month. What that pretty little thing is will be a total surprise.

2. Mexican Summer: A limited edition record is sent to you 13 times a year (other quantities available) that also comes with a free mp3 download. The indie artists will vary, but my coworker who knows the owner tells me they will not dissapoint.

Embroidered text messages. Made me laugh this morning since my mom woke me up at 2am with a text that just said "good night!". Um, thanks mom.

Have Purrrfect Weekend

kitten, originally uploaded by +miche.

I'm sorry, sometimes I can't control myself with puns. I blame my father.

Have a great weekend, stay dry (hello rain, rain and more rain NY!) and I believe I might be getting an early birthday present tomorrow if I play my cards right. I'll share the surpise if it happens.

And thank you again for the get well messages! I think your happy thoughts willed me into feeling better today. You are all the best.

Kate Szabone Jewelry

I'm really into delicate gold rings with gemstones right now. Kate Szabone's Etsy shop is full of beautiful rings that would make really great promise rings (if you aint the marrying type or are just a really awesome significant other coughcough) or a nice (affordable) alternative to some of the traditional over the top engagement rings. Or hell, an awesome treat to yourself.

Found in TeenAngster's Storque post, who is the queen of the BEST Etsy finds. Can I have your job, please?

A little bit of nature

I'm home sick again, and being cooped up in my apartment is making me long for a little nature.

Clockwise from top left: Brass Waterlily Ring, Kindling Small Stump Planter, Little Robot Mousealope Print, Bee 23 by Bing Bang Suede Chain Bag, photo by ▼ A Fötos, Clive & Sunshine Fabric Red Fox

That took me for-eh-ver to compile in my current state, but I was feeling blogger deprived.

Thanks for all the well wishes! I am feeling better, just not spectacular. Billy is home today, so I have a slave nice man to take care of me.

le sneeze

messy morning bed, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

Hi friends, I left work because I have come down with a nasty cold. Again. I get sick a lot lately. Maybe I should become a germ freak like Billy, he never gets sick!

Anyway, posting should resume tomorrow.

But first, check it:
Cats I Am Near
Mad Men Illustrated (addicting)
I just watched this 17 times in a row. Please turn the sound up.

Now, back to not being able to breathe with my mouth closed and diving back into The Shining, which is so so good.

Jenny Lewis

Dude, Jenny Lewis has a new album out today! I had no idea one was even in the works. Get a preview of a few songs here. But my advice would be to just skip Carpetbaggers because it's totally annoying, but maybe that's just me. Can't wait to get home and itunes that shiz!

thanks for the tip off.

This and that

A few things, as I'm trying to get better about not blogging at work. Trying.

1. I discovered this weekend that Governors Island is awesome. Go before it's too cold. The ferry is super fast and free. I think we're going again this weekend for a picnic. It's picnic heaven.

2. These cats are one of the many reasons cats are awesome. Discovered via Joanna's post, which possibly the best photo. Also, another example of an awesome cat.

3. I came home to this little guy today, hidden under a hat on my laptop. Have I mentioned before how much I love my boyfriend? I think I begged him to agree to get a pumpkin to carve for 2 months last year. Hey, I like Fall, what can I say?

190 Bowery

Wow. I just opened the new issue of New York and this gem screamed at me. I haven't even finished reading the magazine because I had to post this first. These photos are from a building at 190 Bowery that was purchased for $102,000 in 1966. 6 floors, 72 rooms. Today it's worth about $30 million and the 3-person family living in it isn't selling the incredible wonder. I can't even imagine what I'd do with 72 rooms.

See for yourself.

The Books kind of day

Today is one of those days where I just want to listen to The Books as loud as I can stand it, all day on my headphones. If you're not familiar with The Books, you are deprived. Listening to them reminds me of working long, long hours into the night at DwellStudio with the design team. I miss a design "team" and a shared stereo between us. But not those hours:)

Drawing Babar

Like a lot of kids, I loved Babar when I was young. So I was super excited to hear about the show that opened over the weekend at The Morgan Library & Museum, Drawing Babar: Early Drafts and Watercolors. The NY Times has a great slide show preview. The Morgan Library is really fantastic, so I'm definitely checking this out soon. Even if you weren't big into Babar, who doesn't love adorable elephant drawings?

TGIF...already? And, help a sista out

, originally uploaded by Slot. K.

It's been kind of a craptastic week outside of my internet world (I feel like I have a split personality sometimes...one living online and one in the real world) but it went by so fast I feel like I was just writing a happy friday post yesterday.

So I'm too busy to post manita today, but I have a favor to ask. I want to reach out using magical blogger powers to see if you or anyone you know in New York makes music and is interesting in collaborating with me (I sing). I am incredibly open to what type of music and what instruments would be involved, but I sing folky-like stuff and have pretty exstentive experience singing jazz. This is something that I lost from my life when I moved to NY and I need to make this happen again. It feels like putting a naked picture of myself on the internet to do this, but I sang in this band in Seattle (the recordings turned out awful and should not have that much reverb or make me sound so whispery and the violin sounds horrid) and here's a more recent example of me singing with my brother, who I sadly live very far away from because he's a musical genius. Again, I might have a panic attack on my way home about putting those online, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm looking for someone who writes music, or is interested in just having fun doing covers, and needs someone to sing or sing with them.

ANYWAY! please contact me (katemiss at gmail.com) if you have any leads. Finding someone via craigslist is kind of my last resort as I have visions of creepy men.

Thanks friends, and have a wonderful weekend.

Young music

15 and 17 year old Klara & Johanna Söderberg from just outside of Stockholm, covering Fleet Foxes. Just incredible. You can hear more of their amazing music here.

These girls make me miss the one and only thing I loved about highschool: making music. Kicking myself hard right now. Merrill, I miss you.

Well played, Pottery Barn

Pottery Barn is one of those stores that makes me think of McMansions, the color cranberry, and seasonal decorating. I never consider it when I need something for my apartment, and when the catalog comes in the mail it goes straight to my recycling bin. But Grace posted about their new catalog and I was shocked to see this fantastic chandelier. The Edison Chandelier would probably be way too overwhelming large in my apartment, but I would kill for a scaled-down version.

A Moment For Bohemian Rhapsody

There's some crazy construction going on in my office and in the past few days the construction workers have been listening to classic rock kind of loud, which is fine by me as I would never hide my love for it. In the past three days I have heard Bohemian Rhapsody 5 times. Apparently the djs have a certain place for it in their hearts. I know I sure do. Let's revisit the greatest moment in Bohemian Rhapsody's history.

Fun Fact: I have seen Waynes World close to 25 times. Does anyone else have an unhealthy obsession with a movie?

Emmanuel Polanco knocks my socks off. See a wonderful collection of his work on Graphic-ExchanGE, one of my favorite places for design inspiration.

Etsy Find: Strim

It's been a while since I featured an Etsy vintage store, so here's a great one! Some lovely finds at Strim. That necklace is amazing.

Toptastic!

Somehow I completely missed this announcement! Though I still have to wait 2 months for the New York Top Shop to open (oh the agony!) their US website is now open!

thank you Cupcakes and Cashmere for the news, who also gives the excellent tip that the code USFREEPOSTAGETS01 gets you free effing shipping! Praise the fashion gods.

Ahhhmazing Deal

This amazing Karen Walker Bow Front Dress is ridiculously on sale at Gargyle, plus if you're a Daily Candy subscriber you can take an additional 25% off. If it were available in my size, I'd be all over that shiz like butter on a roll. *tear*

A healthy dose of wanting

In 25 days I will be 25 years old. Here's my wishful thinking wishlist.

Clockwise from the top left:

  • In God We Trust Short Chain Necklace
  • Red velvet cake or cupcake with almond buttercream frosting from Sugar Sweet Sunshine
  • Dolce Vita Pumps (all my Mad Men watching lately has lead to me question myself why I don't own a pair of pumps. I need them low like this though)
  • a brown Montmarte scarf
  • Fun Is Cool Fox Print
  • Rough Cut Unfinished Yellow Opal (my birthstone) Necklace
  • A plane ticket home to Seattle next Spring when Andrea has her babyyyyyyyyyyyy!
  • Silence & Noise Buffalo Poncho
  • A dachshund puppy
  • A MAC gift card
  • Double Buckle Roger Belt
  • Tina Fey, marry me

In case you haven't laughed your ass off yet.

Giving Madewell 1937 a second shot

Because I was in the area at lunch today, I decided to give Madewell 1937 a second shot. My reasoning was that 1. Stores sometimes improve their second season and 2. Like their parent store, J. Crew, their aesthetic seems like a place that would have a nice, cute Fall collection. I was right. While I still feel that they shouldn't really be marketed as a "cheap" version of J. Crew, the selection grabbed me enough to warrant possibly spending the money on something this time. Last time I thought it wasn't worth it, this time I thought it might be. I didn't have enough time to try anything on, but I'm definitely going back soon to do so.

Their website doesn't do the stuff I liked best too much justice due to styling that's not..well..my style, but you get the picture. I love the corduroy skirt and this shade of blue that the sweater is above was all over the store, and it's fantastic. I think they used a perfect color pallet and there were tons of interesting details, making things feel a little more special than their summer collection. They also had some really awesome boots.

Those not near a store can stay tuned for online shopping coming soon.

    What I'd Wear

Thanks to Joanna for asking me to share what I'd wear on a first date for Smitten. I'm in seriously lovely company!

Thinking about dating again makes me kind of nauseated, but it was nice to think of the fun part! :)

    This week was lightning fast

, originally uploaded by jenerally speaking.

Two things I can't wait for:

    1. Brunch tomorrow with some awesome people
    2. Because I am a giant nerd, NYC International Pickle Day on Sunday in my 'hood. If it rains I will cry hard that I can't gorge myself on pickles without the use of an umbrella.

    Have a splendid weekend!

    Red Lips

Joanna brought up the point that men seem to be more drawn to her when she wears red lipstick. I agree and think that that my favorite redhead here is rocking red lips perfectly. I think I've found my new girl crush. (I'm sorry Charlotte, I tried really hard to like your new haircut but it's just not doing it for me) (I'm mildly retarded)

    New Yorkers Rejoice!

    coffee, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

Stumptown, the ridiculously fantastic coffeeshop that until now only Seattlites and Portlanders (is that the correct term?) have been able to enjoy, is coming to New York! The owner is opening a roastery and shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn and a cafe in the soon-to-be Ace Hotel in Chelsea! I had no idea an Ace was opening in NY! Best hotel ever. Though I can imagine the prices won't be as sweet as in the Northwest.

I can't wait, for the most part New Yorkers don't know their damn coffee.

    I'll fork the $12 over

I know it's a total teen movie, but I think it's safe to say that I will see anything with Michael Cera - as he is my hero, my secret crush, and if he bothers you than clearly something is wrong with you.

I saw this being filmed last year on my street and had the nice crew member we asked told me not just the name of the movie, but that Cera was in it, I would have stuck around to watch like a 12 year old. You know, like clutching my Arrested Development dvds, waiting for him to autograph them. In a totally non-creepy way. Um.

    Poncho Love

Due to failed ebay bidding and unsuccessful Etsy searches for a poncho/cape, I want to run to Urban Outfitters as fast as I can and snatch this poncho up. I like that it's purple, kind of an unexpected plaid poncho color, no? I'm so incredibly impressed with Urban's Fall selection. It seems like they send me a catalog every week and it's always taunting me.

    William Steinman, new drawings

Billy (sometimes I just can't call him William) had me scan some new drawings of his today to add to his site and I said whoa, you gotta let me post some of these. I wish you could all see them in person as they're layers of tracing paper and plastics and paint that my scanner just couldn't do justice. I love them. So here's a little preview because I'm too tired to add them to his site tonight.

Hey guys, I'm ridiculously excited to be Etsy's latest Featured Buyer! Check it out and show some love.

Thanks a million to Alison (aka TeenAngster) for making it happen.

    Passion Pit

This video was the only way I could easily share this song with you, please ignore the weird non-video for this song. Just use it for the sound.

Meighan turned me onto Passion Pit, which I've become obsessed with in the last few hours. I'm quite sad to find out that their show that's 2 blocks away from me next week is sold out. I don't want to see the French Kicks headline at the Bowery Ballroom just to see them a week later.

    a few things

    thirfted, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

I'm not exactly in the mood for blogging today so instead of my usual 2-3 posts on different things, I give you a list.

I bought the beauties above in an Ohio thrift store. total cost- $5. I also scored these Etienne Aigner loafers on Ebay, for..um..way more. But they're amazing and I think that combined with my boots from last year I'm set for Fall shoes. (famous last words:)

Old Navy has all of those amazing Fall pieces we gushed over, get your butt over there! I scored this lovely dress, which this model does not justice as it looks too big on her. I'll document my way hotter-ness for you later. I kid!

We finished Mad Men season 1. Um, what? That ended had up both jumping up shaking our fists saying WHAT WHAT WHAT?! HOW HOW HOW? Good, but like, how did that happen PEGGY?! Ok, I'll stop spoiling it for the rest of you who aren't caught up. Does anyone know if you can watch season 2 without having AMC or a television? I swore I thought someone said you could get it on itunes, but I'm not seeing that. I don't think it's possible for me to wait for Mad Men and Battlestar Galactica at the same time. No way.

Nepalese is my new favorite cuisine.

    Hello, Weekend

Like ivory., originally uploaded by Olivia Bee.

Despite only have a three-day work week, I'm ridiculously excited for the weekend to be here to be incredibly lazy and NOT BE IN A CAR! I'm super sad that the Art Parade was cancelled, as New York is bracing itself for Tropical Storm Hannah (yeah right, I'm going to forget as it's 80 and clear skies right now and will be caught in the sudden down pour like a dope), but instead there will be lots of Mad Men watching (oh good lord, it's getting better and better!)

So stay dry, have fun, and maybe we can coax a blog post out of Andrea on the adventures in Being Pregnant? Hmm??

And, fyi, the above photo was taken by a 14 year old. I know, whoa. Check out her photos, I wish I had been doing something that amazing at that age!

Hey guys, I have had the same roll of film in my camera since I went home to Seattle in the Spring. It was so long ago that it was SNOWING in Seattle. I am such a loser, but I finally finished off the roll, and I'm madly in love with almost every single shot, I went a little flickr crazy last night. I either put the film in weird or I have a new, strange light leak, which added some lovelyness I do believe.

    Black Cab Sessions

Anyone else obsessed with The Black Cab Sessions? A cab in London picks the musicians up and they play in the backseat. I've always been such a sucker for acoustic versions of my favorite songs. It reminds me of when I lived for MTV's Unplugged sessions. Someone sent the link around at work a few weeks ago and I've made it my goal to listen to them all. Fleet Foxes above and Lykke Li below (which you'll remember from the video last week you all went nuts for).

    H is for Home

These remind me of you, Andrea.

    Coat Check

It's going to be 90 degrees today and all I can think about is how nice it would be to bundle up in a warm coat. Apparently I'm leaning towards plaid.
