Happy Halloween

Halloween., originally uploaded by sherbet tone.

Happy Friday & Halloween, friends. This year I'm skipping out on the costume thing and we're just going to go see a scary movie at midnight. We're deciding between Night of the Living Dead and Nightmare on Elm Street, both excellent movies for their own very different reasons.

We're also going to capitalize on our hopefully hungover neighbors not going in such a huge crowds to Clinton Street Baking Company tomorrow moring and finally have brunch there. The average wait for brunch is 2 HOURS! It's supposed to be amazing, but my max wait time is 30 minutes before I start to eat the sidewalk.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Fashionable Cats

Etsy has a hilarious/awesome article in The Storque about cat wear (sweaters, leg warmers, scarves, etc). My favorite comment on the article is "Maybe if it smelled like steak I could get my cat to wear a sweater!". I don't think I could get Wendy in a sweater if my life depended on it. But picturing it is hilarious enough.

Vintage Hitchcock Movie Posters

Last weekend I went to an antiques trade show that Billy set one of the booths up for, and among all the amazing things I saw what stuck in my head the most was this incredible French version of an original movie poster for The Birds. (It looked just like this only in perfect, non-folded condition and in a beautiful frame) I couldn't get it out of my head all week and went hunting for something similar.

Um yeah, let's just say that vintage Hitchcock posters are probably the most expensive movie posters on earth (the Rear Window poster is $10,000.00 - $15,000.00). But le sigh how amazing are these (My three favorite Hitchcock movies) that I found at Cinema Masterpieces? I would settle for a reproduction perhaps, but that's probably not the same. The Vertigo one is fantastic.

Noah Bembibre 2009 Calendar

Hot damn I love calendar season. I love love love me some calendars. Remember this gem last year? Well, Noah Bembibre is back with another amazing 2009 edition and you better act fast if you want it because it was ridiculously popular last year. I know I just bought Alyson's calendar, but luckily hers will be perfecto to have on my desk and his will be smashing on my kitchen wall.

Ok, now no one else tempt me with your calendars. I have a problem, clearly. Unless a really cool one comes out that I need to buy Billy. Then it's ok. Or maybe if I need one next to my bed..or..

thanks a million to Oh Joy! for bringing this to my attention.

L'Affiche Moderne

L'Affiche Moderne sent me their website to me this morning and I'm in love! L’Affiche Moderne is a French fine art print shop with the works of young photographers, graphic designers and children’s illustrators, all in limited editions of 300.

I love it, especially the photography. It's very hard to agree on what art to put on your walls when you live with an artist, but I'd love a big giant print.

Truant Magazine

I've been keeping my lips sealed for MONTHS but the day has finally come! Truant magazine is here, a travel guide headed by Jessica of The Shiny Squirrel and Erin of Design for Mankind! The debut issue is all about New York, which many of you email me about. Where should you go? Well have a look for yourself. Check out my walking tour of my neighborhood, the Lower East Side. It was very hard to only pick a handful of my favorites. I hope you enjoy, and congrats, ladies, for an amazing end result!

The best part is that it's only 2 clams and that is damn worth it.

Get it here now!

The Secret Lives of Decorno Readers

0169, originally uploaded by Cia de Foto.

Decorno has a fascinating post asking her readers how many times a week they have sex. The anonymous (and brave non-anonymous) comments are pouring in and I find them really interesting. I don't know about you, but this is not something I discuss with friends, so I like getting a little glimpse into strangers minds.

YouWorkForThem Patterns

I'm working on a project at work right now that requires the use of patterns. In my quest for possible use of stock patterns I discovered that YouWorkForThem's stock vectors section has some that blow everything else I've come across out of the water in terms of price and uniqueness. Sadly they're not simple enough for what I'm doing and I ended up just making them myself, but these are super rad and inspiring. Perhaps you can use them for something awesome?

Joni makes it better

I'm having a serious case of the Mondays today. I did not want the weekend to be over when I woke up this morning. When I'm feeling crappy I listen to Joni Mitchell, Blue if all I have is my ipod, and that or Court and Spark if I'm home with my record player. I still remember the first time I heard her, outside of her radio hits that would occasionally come on in the grocery store. I was in junior high and a friend gave me a mix tape with "A Case of You" on it. I still think it's her best song. I wish I could have found a less cheesy youtube video:)

What do you listen to when you're not exactly feeling chipper?

Happy Friday

Pondering his Saturday..., originally uploaded by juangrande.

I thought that it was only fitting for my friday flickr pick to be of something adorable, seeing as it was a running theme this week, even though I'm not a fan of the flickr photo being vertical (I sacrifice style for adorableness). Charlie here is just enjoying his morning cup of tea. What a little gentleman.

If you're in NY, be sure to check out the NY Art Book Fair on now until Sunday!
And, the The 18th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade on Sunday! Billy and I go to this dog park to watch the dogs at least once a week. Adding costumes into the mix is guaranteed amazingness.

Terrariums for Dummy's

I've always wanted to make a terrarium but I'm kind of lazy and usually screw things up like that. Luckily Made By Mavis has an etsy shop stocked full of them ready to go. I personally love these mini ones and think they would look awesome on my desk at work.

Au Revoir Simone on Refinery29

Photograph by Flora Hanitijo

I squealed this morning at the sight of my Refinery29 email because they have a great interview with Au Revoir Simone! Could those girls be any more adorable? I'm stupendously excited that they're working on a new album and that an album of remixes of The Bird of Music is coming out November 11th.

If you're not familiar with them, you can hear all their songs on their awesome website.

Update on the new Jenny Lewis album

Acid Tongue is really, really good. It's the best album ever to walk to work to. And annoy my neighbors with. And I still think Carpetbaggers is annoying, (I'm not a fan of Elvis Costello. Please don't stab me) but that's ok. I love every single other song.

Vintage Coach Briefcase Bags

Briefcase bags and hot right now. I'm resisting the urge to snatch this amazing vintage Coach bag up, so someone save me and buy it for yourself, dear reader.

Or maybe you'd like to spend a little less and/or go for something a bit smaller? I've got you covered.

Eden & Eden

Everyone's talking about Eden & Eden's new online store, but it's too good to not share a few of my favorite things - which were very hard to narrow down.

This scarf is nice and basic, but the fringe adds an interesting detail.

Wendy's Home

wendy's home, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their really nice comments and emails about wishing Wendy well. We brought her home from the vet Monday night, and despite having some gnarly stitches and a resulting cone on her head, she seems extremely happy. We've heard her purr for the first time and she even slept with us in bed! She has to get one more surgery in a few months, but it's very routine and she should be fine. She's eating like a pig and entertains us by running into things with her cone. I'm really glad she pulled through because she's an absolute peach.

Still on the theme of cute

I'm currently living vicariously through Brooke of Inchmark. Her craftiness (which was formally put to use as the senior art director at Martha Stewart Living) amazes me and when I'm a mother (someday) I hope I have at least an inch (pun badly intended) of her coolness. Her owl costume for her son is so cute I nearly spit my coffee out onto my keyboard from squealing. And be sure to check out the ventriloquist's dummy costume as well, which is hilarious and perfect. Brooke, I salute you.

The Be Side

I get the sneaking suspicion that I've posted about this Etsy shop before, but maybe it's just so good it feels like that. Like when you meet someone and you feel like you've known them your whole life. That or someone else posted it and I'm just a stealing jerk.

Um, anyway, love love love The Be Side.

Hilary Berseth

After seeing the amazing slideshow on NY Mag's website about how Hilary Berseth makes his incredible beeswax sculptures, I could hardly wait for the weekend to come to check them out in person. They were in fact just as impressive as I thought they would be, so if you're in the area you have to check them our for yourself at Eleven Rivington. And you must look at the little slideshow on how they're made.

Cupcake Bowl

Wetter Indochine Cupcake Bowl

Classy and adorable? Why yes, yes it is.

Happy Anniversary For Me, For You!

Somehow I totally missed that October 7th was a very special day: our anniversary! See, Andrea and I actually started this blog in February of '07, however it only lasted 4 months due to me going through the biggest change of my life and falling off the face of the earth. Then I got my shiz together and we re-launched in October. So technically we have been blogging for more than a year, but its hard to calculate with the break, so let's just call it October.

See, I told you, October=Celebration month! Others are also celebrating, so I guess October is a good month to start something new.

So in honor, I've given the blog a make-over, which I've been itching to do for a while. I may make a few little adjustments here and there along the way as I can never settle.

And now, I will finally share with you my excellent Frye boots and and I finally got a cape! Snatched up in a heartbeat from the most excellent Etsy seller UncommonEye. I love them both to death.

Thank you to all the amazing readers who have kept me motivated, inspired, and lucky to know you all. And most of all, thank you to Andrea, who has taken her turn to drop off the face of the earth, but for the BEST reason ever, and who still stops by all the time to keep me going.

Hello, Weekend

Pig, originally uploaded by feaverish.

I'm quite late in the game today, but I was away from my desk all day for work, so better late than never. I had semi-bad today as Wendy had to undergo emergency surgery for a problem I won't go into the gross sick-cat details of, and they now think she'll be just fine, but for a while there we weren't sure if she was going to make it. Needless to say I wasn't the happiest camper. You rescue a cat from a place where it's been in a cage for 6 months, and you're bound to encounter problems...I just didn't know it would be this bad. They had to keep her overnight and I miss her terribly. We've only had her for a few days but I already love that little lady. I hope she comes back and forgives us for taking her there to undergo a painful traumatic experience.

George Carlin once said "anytime you buy a pet you’re buying a tragedy". Le sigh.

So to change the downer subject, feaverish has some new very cool macro shots of plastic animals I'm drowning myself in right now.

The Shiny Squirrel One Year Anniversary Party

I hope that I'll be seeing some of you wonderful people this Saturday in Brooklyn at The Shiny Squirrel One Year Anniversary Party. The Shiny Squirrel is not only an awesome store and blog, but the rock star behind it, Jessica, is one of the most fantastic bloggers I have had the pleasure to meet more than once. The party will have amazing things like burlesque dancers! cupcakes! music! and more!

This Saturday, 6-9:30 PM at Public Assembly

Amazing poster by Samantha Hahn, also an awesome blogger/illustrator I've had the great pleasure to meet.

Misato Suzuki

A few months after we moved to Manhattan I went through this phase of sitting in front of the windows or on the fire escape, making little line drawings of the view of all the clustered builings and my favorite, fire escapes. It's a little cliche, I know, but something is just so amazing about all the madness of the buildings in a crowded city. So naturally Misato Suzuki's line drawings of city scenes (Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris to name a few) get a special little place in my heart. Her paintings are lovely too, but I like the drawings best.

Best Birthday Present Ever

wendy morning, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

Internet, meet Wendy, my birthday present from Billy who we have been trying to aquire for weeks. After much annoying back and forth, waiting, and hoping we rescued her last night from an incompetent vet clinic in our neighborhood (long story of totally annoyance caused by them). Someone dropped her off for a leg problem and never picked her up! She's no more than a year old and as sweet as can be. I cannot tell you how hard it was to leave for work this morning, which caused me to be very, very late.

We are so excited.

Paris Hilton's My New BFF

There are no words. Could this trump Rock of Love for best worst reality tv show ever? I think I writhed in my seat and shouted "NO WAY! OH MY GOD ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" at least 12 times while watching this. Her elimination phrase is "TTYN". I kid you not.

Portrait of a Small Town

Amazing photos from Everett W. Kuntz's book, "Sunday Afternoon on the Porch: Reflections of a Small Town in Iowa, 1939-1942," on the NY Times website.

Nine West friends & family sale

Nine West is not always at the top of my list for shoes and bags, but they remain a good old standard and once in a while they score points in my book. Starting this thursday until Sunday, if you enter the promo code FRIEND at checkout at ninewest.com, you get 30% regular price items or an additional 25% sale items. Awesome. Above are a few things I really like there right now.

It's Lovely! I'll Take It!

It's like the real estate version of Go Fug Yourself, and I am so addicted it's not even funny. Actually, it's really, really funny. It's Lovely! I'll Take It! "A collection of poorly chosen photos from real estate listings"

Nuh-uh

Guys, some really important breaking news has some to my attention (and by breaking I mean Friday but I just found out now): They are making 10 Things I Hate About You into a TV show on abc (insert crowd boo here).

Now, let me just say that I am completely not ashamed to say that I effing love this movie. Ok, it's true that I have not seen it in about 7 years (wow that just really rang in my ears) but I will say that not only have I seen it a million times, I owned the soundtrack. Remember owning soundtracks? I know, right? The movie was set in Seattle (never a backdrop to teen movies), stars a very young and new Heath Ledger, and is definitely my favorite teen movie of my generation.

Was anyone else obsessed with this movie? Or would you like to challenge my best teen movie decision? Anyone else completely sick of them just remaking things instead of coming up with new ideas?

Until tomorrow...

I'll return tomorrow with all my full blogging glory, because today I have an immensly fun day of embedding youtube videos into a power point presentation for a coworker which will take me hours upon hours to finish, so I gotta focus. I know, you're jealous and wondering how I am handed such a task in this go-go design world in NY, and I will tell you that all you have to do is open your big mouth at a meeting that you, in fact, know exactly how to embed said videos. Then, as the words carelessly tumble out of your mouth you will think to yourself, "Oh shit, that is actually the last thing in the universe I want to do". But it will be too late, and then you will spend all of a Monday, Columbus Day, that a large part of NY gets off, with your hands more than full.

So, friends, all I have for you is a totally awesome photo that Joanna was so kind to include in her Smitten post about readers who love their dads, of my dad and I camping when I was a wee lass. I only wish you could get a better view of the 80's hair I'm rocking at such a tender age. So. Much. Bangs. And yes, my dad is totally rocking a Coors hat.

See you all tomorrow, AND thank you for all the birthday wishes. I had a fabulous birthday.

For You

Today is a very special day, it's Kate's birthday! Since she is taking the week off, I've decided to come out of hibernation to let you all know–because she's fabulous! Wouldn't you agree?

Thank you for never failing to inspire me, on this blog and in life. I hope when we are old, you'll become my neighbor and I'll bake you pies. You mean the world to me lady!

We need a little music

Fleet Foxes, Katie Cruel, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

I interrupt this scheduled blogging break to bring you two videos. Exhibit A, I saw the Fleet Foxes just hours ago and it was one of the best shows I've seen in my life. If you get a chance to see them, DO! The crowd was horribly annoying for some reason, but it was worth it. For the encore, Robin stepped in front of his mic and unplugged his guitar and sang Katie Cruel. It was breathtaking. He has the most amazing voice on this planet. And, I want his babies. It's ok, I told Billy.

Next up, fabulous reader Melissa sent me this AWESOME video of Lykke Li and Bon Iver playing "Dance, Dance, Dance". Whoa, what a strange match made in heaven. Adorable. I'll have their babies too, thank you.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and please don't think my last post was gloom and doom! I just need a break, that's all. I just have an internet addiction that needs a little snooze for a week. Thank you for all the nice comments and emails about your love for the blog. It broke my little heart. In a good way.

Happy Friday

300, originally uploaded by people folk.

I'm going for a friday cat theme lately.

Have a great weekend everyone, and next week too as I'm going to take the week off from blogging. I need a breather and time to clear my head about what exactly this blog's purpose is in my life. I often feel I waste a lot of my time trolling the internet, which usually starts as looking for something to post here. Do you ever feel that way? You just come up for a breath, look at the clock and realize, shit, I cannot believe I've been looking at pictures of baby animals and reading the triva page on imdb for The Godfather for 3 hours.

This weekend I'm looking forward to seeing the Fleet Foxes (yay!) and probably going to see Rachel At The Wedding after reading the rave reviews.

See you in a week!

New DwellStudio with Emily Neal

If you're on DwellStudio's mailing list, you may have seen my dear friend Emily Neal looking fabulous in their designer desksides email. They have two new patterns for baby and kids that are hand-drawn by Emily - Geometry and Dragonfly* - bringing a fresh new twist to their popular geometic and floral patterns they're known for. I think they're amazing and would even put the kid's full-size Geometry on my bed if I didn't live with a boy who'd object to pink.

Now available here and here.

*Correction: Emily says that while she did have a hand in designing it, she did not hand-draw Dragonfly. This is what I get for making this post before Emily saw it because I was too excited.

Get 'em while they're hot

pony party (awesome etsy shop, by the way) has a set of 3 sweet vintage pant hangers for sale that could be an affordable, awesome way to hang art in your home, as I first spotted on Ladies and Gentlemen Home a ways back. Please snatch them up before I do, because I've hit my limit of ebay/etsy buying this week, like whoa.

Rachel Comey Shoes

Rachel Comey's shoes have been taunting me for over a month now with their total exactly what I want perfection and just out of reach price range. They're amazing. I might save up for a pair, because I can't get them out of my head.

Zéh Palito

magia sempre, originally uploaded by Zéh Palito.

Zéh Palito is a Limeira-São Paulo artist who flickr friended me the other day and I've been glued to his photo page for days now. He has some of the most unique graffiti I've seen a really distinct style that I love. He also seems like quite a high-energy character.

Apparently October is Celebration Month?
