free Here We Go Magic download

Here We Go Magic, the amazing band I saw open for the Department Of Eagles last month, released their album this week and I did a happy dance last night from that discovery. It’s SO good. Tunnelvision, my favorite song on the album for sure, is available as a free download (or a streaming play, if you’re lazy) over at the FADER. Combined with the surprisingly amazing weather this morning that allowed me to walk all the way to work, it was a perfect soundtrack to my city.

Basically you guys are awesome. The day is better because of people (the nice ones) like you.

I broke my Frye boots and it’s going to cost me more to fix them than it did to buy them, but I’m just going to read your nice comments over and over and be ok with it. Then I’m going to tell myself that broken boots is a stupid thing to be sad over, and then I’m going to go home and make paper cranes and watch The Wire and force Wendy to cuddle with Billy and I.

perhaps I should have said "do not care for"

February 18th, 2009

Dear readers,

I had no idea that tying in a joking rant about hating pigeons with an awesome pigeon shirt would cause such a stir! I don’t really hate pigeons, I save my hate for much more important things. Obviously I do not really think they are spawn from garbage as that is a belief right up there with unicorns. I am annoyed by pigeons, but I would never hurt them or start some type of pigeon hating club where I go out protest against them and yell that pigeons need to get a job and stop flying in front of me with their spray of dust mites. Waking up to emails telling me what a hateful animal hater I am is not the way to start the day!

I am a sarcastic person and I hold real hate for very little things. I don’t even kill spiders! Part of me tells myself to just shake it off because I know this of myself, but I’ve always been someone who hate hate hates people being mad at me when I feel the need to explain myself. You are all entitled to your opinions and to tell me off, but I just wanted you to know I was not being very serious. I guess I will shelf my “I really do not care for ferrets after one tried to claw my face off” rant.

I suppose I should email this back to the people who said they’d never read my blog again, but oh well. You win some, you lose some.

Love,
Kate

a few words on pigeons

 a few words on pigeons

Have I ever told you how much I hate pigeons? They’re flying rats. When I went to college and met Micah, he shared with me that he too hated them just as much as I did, and pointed out a startling observation that you never see baby pigeons, so clearly they are spawn from garbage. That’s why they’re different colors! Brown and beige ones? Paper bag and food garbage pigeons. Black and white pigeons? Discarded newspaper pigeons. And so on and so on. They’re bastards and the first time I saw someone (in Long Island) who KEPT pigeons, it sent shivers up my spine. Hell no.

So anyway, that rant leads me to the fact that this shirt made me laugh really, really hard, despite my pure hate for those jerks.

 Megan Auman

Megan Auman has a really cool Etsy shop full of lots of lovely laser-cut steel pieces, but I’m most in love with these pendant lamps. Really nice.

A three-day weekend comes to an end, and I am A. in love with my new camera, and B. full of lots of good food and friends.

ps. I’m so glad to not be the only nerd in the blogger world – BSG Friday? Oh my god. In the words of Clemintine “John f’in Hodgman!”

pps. Bits Of My Weekend is going to be a weekly Monday thing (if I keep my act together, ha)

EDIT: For those of you who have asked, I ended up getting the Canon Rebel XS. So far I LOVE it.

Weekend, here I come

 Weekend, here I come
photo by the always awesome moxiee

This weekend I am very excited for:

- Going to Dia: Beacon again! We’re taking the train for a one-day trip this time for a less stressful version, and I’m super excited.
- Picking up my new camera after work!! Thank you all for you recommendations, you helped a lot. A few of you mentioned the Canon XS that I’d had my eye on, so it helped me make the decision. I’m so excited to take it to Beacon and test it out.
- Battlestar Galactica tonight! Oh my god can I take a moment to nerd out on you? The last episode was so intense I nearly peed my pants, so I’m super excited to go watch it tonight at a friends house (who has a tv and cable, ooohh) and get my nerd on.
- 3 day weekend! Need I say more?

We get out at 1 today so I’m cutting today short. Have a great weekend, everyone!

I just laughed so hard Billy had to tell me to calm down so the neighbors don’t think I’m having a mental breakdown or something.

Camera Advise Please?

Dear friends, I am currently trying to research what kind of digital camera to buy. It is a seriously annoying, painstaking process as A. I know nothing and B. There are so many damn cameras! I’ve used sites that people suggested to me (cnet, dpreview) to research, but that just puts me back where I started with too many choices.

Here’s what I’m looking for:
1. Something that takes good low-light photos. I’m not a walking around the city taking photos kind of a person. I’m more into intimate, indoor photos.

2. Something that takes raw photos as I am going to start photographing Billy’s paintings for his website, etc. This is why a DSLR is probably what I need, but if there is some sweet point and shoot that shoots raw (I’ve been looking at the Canon G10, for instance, but I don’t know how I feel about the image quality and low-light situations) tell me if you like it. Raw just gives me more control over adjusting the colors since photos of his paintings have to be so specific.

3. I am not rolling in the dough right now. I don’t want to spend more than $500, unless you tell me that my life is not complete without a certain camera and really, really convince me. I drop things and spill liquids often.

4. I am not taking super professional photos, just personal stuff. Something to keep in mind. I never use a flash, I am kind of lazy and like easy to use cameras.

Thank you so much in advance for any advice! Currently I have a sony cybershot point and shoot, which is a little trooper but takes the worst low-light photos known to man.
