I’m a necklace girl through and through (obviously), but I never wear earrings or bracelets. But these rope dip-dyed bracelets by Tanya Aguiniga make me a bracelet believer. They’re so, so nice.

Jars for my tea

August 25th, 2009

3855953055 22dfe21060 Jars for my tea

A few months ago I stopped drinking ridiculous amounts of coffee every morning and switched to one small cup of tea (iced tea right now in this hideous heat). I can’t tell you how much my stomach thanks me, and I swear it’s easier to get up in the morning – not dying for that cup to feel normal. It’s also fun to try different kinds. My dad has been a tea maniac for as long as I can remember, as he lived in England for a bit when he was younger, and he turned me onto this small tea shop near Boston that sells their tea online here. Don’t let the funny name/logo fool you as every tea I try there is incredible! The blue flower earl grey will change your life. Ok, maybe now. But it’s damn good. They also sell sampler packs that my dad tells me are great. But I’ve accumulated quite a collection of bags of loose tea and would love to put them in some containers. I think some cork jars like these Tonfisk Inside Storage Jars or these Digit Spice Jars would be perfect and look nice lined up on a shelf.

A sneak peek of Jenny‘s new dress for her fall line has my jaw dropping. Though it’s not possible for her to make something that doesn’t have that effect on me. And how lovely does Elly look?

I’ve recently had the pleasure of hanging out with Jenny since she moved to Brooklyn, and would you believe she’s even cooler in person? She has this hilarious sarcastic streak that doesn’t come across as much online, a trait I find important in friends as I am a sarcastic jerk.

Friday night our friend Elise came over and we were all set to cab it up to Union Square to see District 9 with our coke bottles spiked with coconut rum and skittles prepared, but we got there and it was sold out. So we people watched in Union Square until properly buzzed and then walked to the craziest bar where everyone was DECKED OUT rockabilly-style and there were couples in the back swing dancing plus a PHOTO BOOTH! I think I shrieked so loud at the sight of it the whole bar stared at me. Photo booths are as rare as can be in nyc, so I was excited! It’s probably sacrilegious to rearrange a photo booth strip to selfishly fit your bits of my weekend format, but I had to share. In the first shot you can see my fabulously swollen mouth, which I’m still slightly dealing with. Saturday I regretted said rum and coke, but spent the rainy afternoon learning how to use my new camera, and then the rest of the night kicking ass on jewelry preparation. Sunday the rain decided to wave goodbye, so Billy and I hung out in the neighborhood until he went to work and then I went back to my jewelry sweatshop for the night, and now everything is finally ready for tonight. I think. I hope. I always forget something…

Happy Birthday, Grandpa

August 24th, 2009
3529710289 e392c14dab Happy Birthday, Grandpa
grampa & me, originally uploaded by kate / for me, for you.

Today is my grandpa’s 75th birthday. Most people would never guess that he’s 75. He plays volleyball every Friday night, for crying out loud! When I talk about him to Andrea, she says, “Who, young Grandpa?” because that’s how people think of him.

Despite the fact that he doesn’t read my blog, or really understand what the heck my blog is (though he is a fervent emailer and likes to send me about 3 forwards a day with animated gifs, prayers, and/or funny videos) he gets his own birthday post because my grandpa means more to me than most people on this earth do. He raised me for a chunk of my life, and he instilled in me many strong values. I have him to thank for that nagging voice inside my head every time I buy something unnecessary, every time I don’t save some of my paycheck for my savings account, every time I don’t separate the recycling, every time I turn the heat up too high, and every time I leave too many lights on in the house. But I also have him to thank for teaching me that you can judge someone’s character by their handshake, you always hold doors open for the person behind you, family always, always comes first, how to make a gin martini, how to do the electric slide (I’m not joking), and above all, how to be responsible when I needed someone to set that example for me at the time.

When I stayed with him for a while as a kid, he would wake me up every Saturday morning to Willie Nelson. More specifically, Pancho & Lefty. So for his birthday this year, my brother and I recorded our own version of the song for him (my brother did most of the work, I must note) and my brother played it for him at his birthday party. He called me right away, in tears, and I knew it was the perfect gift.

I don’t know what I’d do without you, Grandpa. Here’s to many, many more very young years.

p.s. I don’t want to share the song because it’s just too personal, but Matt and I are working on trying to do some more long distance recording so hopefully we’ll have more songs to share soon. If your new to my blog, you can hear the older songs, here and here.

Have a lovely weekend

, originally uploaded by coquinete.

A storm is rolling in, and I hope it’s not a look at what’s to come this weekend! The humidity has been seriously oppressive this week too, so I hope both will give me a little break so I can get out and use my new camera!! I’ve never shot with a camera like this before, so I’m expecting a little bit of confusion on my part and probably a bit of yelling until I figure it out. Either way, I’m stoked.

The rest of the weekend will be shooting the new necklaces, so keep you eyes out Sunday evening for a post/email about them!

See you Monday, friends.

Blitzen Trapper’s "Furr"

This is quite old, but I hadn’t seen the video for this great song until today when a friend shared it on Faceook. Yet another awesome use of stop motion. I feel like this song should be in Where The Wild Things Are.

Gotta Girl Crush

I’m so in love with Meg and Andrea‘s new blog, Got A Girl Crush, which gives props to some awesome ladies out there “with impeccable style, talent and wit” that I know many of us are crushing on too. Great idea for a blog, and I’m blushing hard to be included with the crushes.
