Floor Mirror

This photo has me swooning over the idea of a big floor mirror. The new apartment has what I consider to be a bit of a hallway (in comparison to all the other places I’ve lived in NY!) so I think I might have to put one on my apartment wish list. I’m digging this option from West Elm, which is on sale.

Time for a change

I am not known to keep a hairstyle for very long, and my locks were getting waaay too unmanageable with my insanely thick hair, so when Billy said to me Sunday, “I really miss your short hair”, I impulsively made an appointment at Soon on Monday to get it chopped off last night. My favorite haircut has always been a bob, and I went for a bit longer bob this time. And because I feel too weird about posting a giant photo of my face here, you can see the before and after here on flickr.

Also, does anyone else feel totally embarrassed handing over a photo of a celebrity to your hair stylist? Yeah that was me last night, handing over Nicole Richie.

Volcano Choir

Volcano Choir is Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Collections of Colonies of Bees, and you can listen to their entire new album, Unmap, on NPR right now. The sound is like an experimental Bon Iver – very loopy, dreamy, and so gorgeous. I wish Justin Vernon would sing me to sleep. Sigh.

Thank you @mieletcannelle for sharing!

Shop Update Heads Up

setting up a shot, originally uploaded by kate / for me, for you.

Friends, so as not to interfere with me moving too much, the next shop update is going to come a week early on Tuesday, September 22nd at 9am EST. I know that this is painfully early in the morning for some, but I promised the next update would be in the morning so that those outside of North America could have a chance to buy a necklace, and I have to do it before I go to work! There will be about 25 necklaces, and around Sunday/Monday I’ll post photos of what will be sold and will post that link here and send it out to the mailing list.

Also, I’ve taken down all of my prints on Etsy because it’s getting near impossible to print things surrounded by all these boxes, but I might put them back in the shop at a later date. I’m also just thinking I might move away from the art portion of my etsy shop, at least for now. Who knows what the future will bring!

The perfect hanging planter

I’ve been waiting patiently until today for Pigeon Toe Ceramics to release their new fall items because this hanging Scribble Planter is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I love the leather strands. They’re made to order and take around 3 weeks, so I don’t feel as lame about buying something for my apartment when we’re in the middle of moving. It will come just in time.

Saturday was one of those days where absolutely nothing went right. We got up early to go sign our lease (which was postponed til then last minute) and decided that because we were in Queens, we’d go to Billy’s school so he could show me the new studio he moved into. Which was a wonderful idea except that the MTA likes to screw over all weekend plans and trains were so effed that it took us half of a day to get somewhere and back that would have taken 15 minutes in a car due to train work. It’s days like that were I pull my hair out and hate New York. I feel really bad for anyone visiting New York on days like that because even I was so, so confused as to how to get to our destination and I consider knowing where all the trains go as one of my superpowers. But Sunday made everything better because the rain stopped, the sun shone bright, and I didn’t set foot in the subway one time. I slept in and spend the entire day hand making a book for a friend’s wedding guestbook and eating too many brownies. I’m pretty sad that it’s Monday because I wish I could do Saturday all over again, but I’ll just think about how we’re going to start moving stuff into the new apartment Wednesday and get super excited…

Have a great weekend!

I’m leaving early today for a rather exciting reason – to sign the lease on our new apartment! We’re moving to Long Island City, which for those of you not in New York, is not actually in Long Island, but in Queens. It’s the first stop in Queens from Manhattan and Brooklyn, so it was a compromise between my commute to work and Billy’s commute to school. It’s an interesting neighborhood that’s exploding lately, and I’m so excited to explore it more. The best part is that it’s just a few blocks from our favorite museum in New York, PS1!, which is going to be hosting the New York Book Art Fair in a few weeks, so I’m thrilled that I’ll be able to just saunter over to check it out. Also the best part is that it’s more than twice the size of our current sardine can, with an extra room for me to have a studio! Oh be still, my heart…

So the next few weeks will be a little insane because the next shop update is scheduled to be around October 1st, but that’s also when we officially have to be out of our old apartment. Luckily we get to start on the new place September 15th, so hopefully things will be in semi-order by the 1st, or the shop update will have to be rearranged. Maybe it will come sooner! I’ll keep you updated.

So, be prepared for more home posts, that’s for sure.

Oh yeah, and have a lovely weekend!

I love the colorful new 2010 letterpress calendar from SeeSaw Designs. I like buying a calendar from a different designer (or two) every year, and this is a top contender for sure.

It’s 63 degrees, rainy, and windy, so I can officially start planning fall clothing without feeling like I’m jumping the gun. I’ll take these from Keller, please!
