Perfect Fall Boots

Dolce Vita got it so right this year with their boots. I’ll limit myself to just one pair.

Hopefully.

update: I ordered the pair on the top right, and they came today and are way too big! I’m exchanging them for a 1/2 size smaller, so hopefully that fits. I ordered them from endless, which has free overnight shipping and returns, so it’s no big deal. I’ll just do it again tomorrow if these are too big again. I know, ridiculously wasteful, but it works:)

Ikea Hack

October 19th, 2009

4023466571 d02e570566 Ikea Hack

The minute I saw this ikea hack on Design*Sponge, I knew I was going to tackle it. This is the first apartment we’ve had with room for a nightstand on each side of the bed, so we were on the lookout for some, and this was such a cheaper and a way cooler looking alternative to everything that was out there.

I started with two Ikea Rast dressers. They are solid, untreated pine and only $40 each. They’re perfect socks and underwear nightstands, especially because all of the rest of our clothes hang in our closet, so we have no dresser. The instructions said to sand them a bit first, but I’m going to just admit to you that I did not do that because I couldn’t find my sandpaper, and it didn’t seem to matter. If you have these dressers already and have been using them, I would definitely sand them first. I did, however, wipe them down really good because they come a little dusty with wood chips. The instructions also said to put everything together before painting them, but we decided that painting before putting them together would be easier. I learned my lesson that I should have put them together first because every inch of the apartment was covered in pieces drying, and when I put it together parts that I didn’t stain showed, so I had to re-stain some of it afterward.

I used Minwax Wood Stain in Dark Walnut. Eric used the stain that has polyurethane pre-mixed in it, but I couldn’t find Dark Walnut in that, so I used one coat of this stain and then the next day I coated it once in clear poly gloss that we already had. This took WAY more time, but I really wanted this specific dark walnut color. The can says you should use two coats of poly, but they looked fantastic after one and the smell was making me DIE so I just stopped at one. Have you ever polyurethaned anything in an apartment before when it’s 40 degrees outside? Get ready for an interesting evening.

For the drawers, I didn’t prime them because honestly I just really didn’t want to buy an entire thing on primer for a couple of drawers, so I just put two coats of high gloss white enamel on them with a roller and that worked perfect.

For the knobs, I actually have one of the knobs Eric used on his dressers in my kitchen, but I find that because they’re so bulky, they come unscrewed easily, so I opted for smaller round knobs made by the same company, found at Home Depot. It would have been useful for me to write down which knobs these were for you, but of course I forgot to! They were also cheaper than the knobs he used, at only $3.50 each. I think you could great creative with which knobs you use, maybe some cute ones from Anthro if you want to splurge a little more. I could see cute milk glass or jadeite knobs here.

So in the end, they look amazing. I don’t think you’d ever know they were from Ikea. It was completely worth all the work and SO worth the cost. It took me about two days to do it with drying time, and in the end about $120 for each dresser total (correction) with the cost of the original dresser and the supplies. Thank you Eric for this awesome project idea! I also love that they now match my vintage desk and side table.

my planter is by Pigeon Toe Ceramics, the ampersand sign was a little gift Janet put in my Three Potato Four order, and my lamps are vintage I got off Ebay. All my bedding is by DwellStudio.

It was definitely a homebody weekend. I worked my butt off on finishing up the Ikea dressers (post about them coming later!) and painting the bathroom, organizing the studio/office (we haven’t decided what to refer to it as yet) and other little projects on Saturday. I didn’t leave the apartment much, except to get up criminally early Saturday morning to go shoot Billy’s new work at his studio in Flushing, and then for Indian food and beers with his classmates later after they finished up their crits. Sunday was the first chunk of hours I got to see Billy at home with nothing to do, so we stayed in our pajamas forever, eating toast in bed and laying in each others arms. It’s funny how putting together Bits of My Weekend on Sunday nights makes me reflect on how much or how little I accomplished.

Famampa tagged me to share the 10th image in my first folder, and while I’m normally too lazy to participate in tagged things like this, this one is clearly meant for lazy people because I can handle it:) I routinely have to move all of my images off of my laptop and onto my external hard drive, so I don’t have anything hilarious and crazy old to share. But my first folder happens to be the folder I keep my film scans in, so this one is a bit old. It’s from our trip to the Northwest in 2007, and this was at the Ace Hotel in Portland. I just want to crawl right into this photo. I loved the Ace, I’d go back in a heartbeat. This trip was the kind where anything that can go wrong will wrong, and despite it being August it poured in Seattle, so on the last two days of the trip we headed down to Portland, where the skies parted, the sun shone, and our tripped was saved by that lovely city.

Eep, almost forgot to tag someone! Ok, I tag P.

Happy Weekend + Happy Birthday, Blog!

, originally uploaded by nikolinelr.

Ok, so I know I’ve kind of been slacking on posting this week, but my nights have been preoccupied with phase two of putting the apartment together after an amazing* Ikea trip. I’m pretty proud of my careful selection of a few “no one will know I bought that from Ikea” pieces. The bedside table hack is underway, too, and I’m super excited about it. I’m also going to paint the bathroom and clean it up this weekend. FUN, I know. You’re jealous, no?

*actually totally not amazing

Also, I realized while putting together the FAQ page that tomorrow For Me, For You turns two! I’m not sure if blogs have birthdays or anniversaries, but I think a birthday sounds more appropriate because I’d like to think that it was birthed two years ago… even though that sounds kind gross. Thank you all for a wonderful two years, I’m going to celebrate with a cupcake or six. It’s been an amazing two years and it’s done a lot of good in my life that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Vintage Trays

October 16th, 2009

I decided that I wanted to find a nice vintage tray to put on my bedside table for all my little things that collect on it to sit on (or “trinkets” as Billy likes to call them.) I was completely unaware of how overwhelming that search would be on Etsy. There are SO many wonderful trays out there! I had to stop pulling examples for this post because the image got too long. I just quit. They’re all so great the decision will be tough! (I’d go for the round one in a heartbeat if it weren’t too large!)
