Stop-motion Magic

I don't know how it's possible that I forgot to mention this in Bits Of My Weekend earlier, but Friday evening we went with Billy's parents to see Fantastic Mr Fox, and it was quite possibly the best movie I've seen all year. I sat in my seat with a huge grin on my face the entire time, completely dazzled. We all spent the rest of the night quoting parts from it and talking about why we loved it, which led me to realize one of the reasons that it grabbed me by the heart so strong. When I was a kid my family was obsessed with the series of Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas specials made in the 60's/70's. I've seen them more times than I can count, my personal favorites being Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town and Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Is it weird that I'm oddly attracted to young Santa? And I seriously wanted to be Jessica so bad - watch this awesome clip and tell me she isn't a fashion icon. The stop-motion of Fantastic Mr Fox gave me a serious dose of nostalgia.

Anyway, go see all of these movies! Right now!

Now I'm nostalgic, too! Can't wait to see "Fantastic Mr. Fox," I've had a thing for animated foxes ever since Disney's "Robin Hood."

I can absolutely not wait to see this movie! I have a teensy weensy obsession with stop motion, dating back to the same Christmas movies you mentioned, plus a little Wallace and Gromitt and Davey and Goliath (if you haven't seen this, seriously youtube it. it's some crazy lutheran stuff out of the 60's, but i loved it as a child!)

I started reading The Fantastic Mr. Fox to my 3rd graders today since I can't wait to see the movie myself. They were really into it and one tried to steal the book off my desk to finish reading it himself.

yes! I had a similar experience with Mr. Fox on Friday .... from smiling straight through (no idea when was the last time I did that) to discussing with friends on the bus ride home, and making "what the cuss" jokes later that night. Definitely worth it to see in a theater. I think some of the visual impact (but none of the charm) would be lost on a small screen. LOVE that movie. And I agree that it's no coincidence that the stop-motion Rudolph is one of my favorite holiday movies.

I loved this film! My sister and I saw it together and spent the rest of the weekend going "what the cuss?!?" It was an absolutely beautiful film and I'm still awed by it.

You may hear have heard Wes Anderson on Fresh Air talking about the movie. I grew up watching the classic shows you mention, too. I've loved all of Wes Anderson's movies and look forward to taking my daughters to see "Fantastic..." this coming week!!

I loved it too! We saw it Sunday night, so awesome. Is it just me or did Ash actually look like Jason Schwartzman? Perfect voice for that character. :)

I want to see FMF so badly but all of my friends seem opposed to the idea. "But it's Roald Dahl + Wes Anderson," I protest. Has a more perfect match ever been formed? (One might argue that Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers may be more magical. Or Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, even!) I think I might just go and see it on my own.
