The original vs The Covers: Runnin’ Out Of Fools

February 28th, 2010

I’m going to pull a Stephanie here and do a little original vs the covers. I still have something planned for Music Monday, but this is just a bonus weekend post.

The original by Aretha Franklin. She’s so young.

Isaac Hayes. Oh my, that’s a sexy cover.

First Choice cover. Groovy.

Neko Case cover. None of her music is on youtube besides live performances, so you can also hear it here (or below) in it’s much better glory, as it’s my favorite version of this song.

Some of you may mention that Elvis Costello did a cover of this, but the internet is 100% free of that song, apparently. Which honestly I’m not that bummed about as I’m not a Costello fan. What? Blasphemy to some of you, I know.

Snow Day: the sequel

snow day

Another snow day, this time even more snow, but snow day was not called at work until 2pm. Fine by me, still enough time to come home in the daylight and get a nice walk in. I picked my my library book finally (the library is only open while I’m at work, so aggravating) and we walked to the overpriced fancy grocery store on the other side of LIC to buy some nice steak to make for dinner. Seeing Wendy watch the giant snowflakes fall is unbelievably cute, I should film it. Bring it, snow day. But can you please go away tomorrow? I’m tired of you, pretty as you may be.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A stack of perfection

February 26th, 2010

Speaking of vintage textiles, my heart skipped a beat when I saw this photo from The Vintage Showroom in London on A Continuous Lean. I’d kill for that stack of sweaters to be mine. Oh, those patterns!

Warby Parker

February 24th, 2010

Wow, did you see this amazing glasses company, Warby Parker, on daily candy this morning? I’m in love. Besides having super awesome shapes and colors, all of their glasses are only $95, they donate a pair to charity for every pair sold, and you can return then for free if you don’t like them. Say what? I’d love to hear from someone who has purchase a pair from them, because I’m definitely considering it! I have a hard time with buying glasses online that I can’t try on, but with them being so cheap and having free shipping and returns, I might give it a go. I’m especially loving the Fillmore in Light Tortoise. Oh and I love their model shots – something most eyewear sites are missing.

Grayed-out nails

February 24th, 2010

The photo of my gray nails on Monday seemed to really excite a lot of you, and someone left a comment (Stephanie – but no blog listed for me to give this girl credit!) about Rescue Nails and their awesome gray polishes. Oh my, was she ever correct! Two lovely grays + a pinkish gray and greenish gray. Be still my heart, I need you. Confession: I bit my nails until I was about 21 years old. I stopped, but I HAVE to have nail polish on at all times to stop myself! I think I’ve worn every color there is, but I love all the new fun colors outside of pink and red that are coming out lately.

My kind of chambray

February 23rd, 2010

For some reason I have a hard time pulling chambray shirts off, as cute and hip as they look on other ladies out there. But I have a feeling I could pull this awesome Eryn Brinie chambray jacket off, because of its fantastic slouchy shape that I love in jackets. One more for the warmer weather list…

Tokyo on my mind

February 23rd, 2010

I’ve wanted to visit Tokyo for as long as I can remember, and Ebony Bizys’ posts on her blog Hello Sandwich (such a cute blog) about her recent trip to Tokyo are making me so very, very jealous. Her post on Sunday about Shimokitazawa, a Tokyo suburb with tons of vintage stores and tiny cafes, had me especially in love. Ebony says it’s “packed with teeny tiny six-seater bars, adorable cafes, loads of cheap and cheerful restaurants, vintage and retro clothing stores, live music venues, secondhand record stores, homewares and vintage stores and is generally known for trendsetting in youth culture.” My kind of neighborhood. Who will teleport me there right now?

Music Monday

February 22nd, 2010

I came across a link to the video above on 2 Or 3 Things I Know and sat here with my jaw opened the whole time. Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are siblings that are only 15, 19, and 20*, and completely of blow my mind. I’d love to see them live.

*I’ve read a few different conflicting ages reported, but it’s something around there

And then this, just because I had a dream Thursday night that I was in a kick-ass Led Zeppelin cover band. Yes, that’s kind of one of my dreams. I need my brother to move here so we can make that happen. Jimmy Page is pretty dreamy in this video, all cool and mysterious.

Shop Update Change Of Date

February 22nd, 2010

necklace outtake

I had to change the shop update from next Sunday to next Tuesday because I am so incredibly stressed out right now that I won’t have it ready Sunday! It will now be Tuesday, March 2nd at 9am EST. I do apologize, but I realized I was killing myself getting this ready and need all of Sunday to prepare, and I can’t do it Monday morning. I hate having shop updates before I’m done with packaging everything up because I like to get them out the door the very next day. I’m sorry that it will be so early now for those of you on the west coast, but I hope the timing is better for those of you outside of the US who have been asking for an earlier time for the release.

I’ll share with you the preview Sunday evening (the 28th). An email will go out to the newsletter subscribers Monday evening to remind you, and there will be a post here.

Thanks for understanding, friends!
