astronomical illustrations
March 9th, 2010

I was just searching for images of space in the NYPL’s Digital Gallery and came across these amazing illustrations by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot from the 1880′s. You can buy prints of them from the database, which sounds very tempting.

Wow, those are awesome! I’m trying to get more art on my walls, and I think I’ll have to put up a couple of these.

oooh. these are beautiful. they remind me of work by vija celmins (maybe it’s the other way around, since she’s more…contemporary?). you should do a quick search for her work- it’s mostly graphite on paper and simply gorgeous.
cheers,
mindi

I really adore these.
They remind me of the original “the day the earth stood still”.

I love his work – I didn’t know you could find it at the NYPL Digital Gallery.
(And I second the recommendation for Vija Celmins – she is one of my favorite artists. I would commit a minor crime to have one of her pieces.)

Incredible. I was lucky enough to see the aurora borealis last summer. It looked almost as cool as Étienne’s interpretation. These are really inspiring and original.
