Friday Bits

July 30th, 2010

Highlights from the blogland this week:

Take Ivy, the 1965 Japanese handbook on preppy style, is a collection of candid photographs shot on American Ivy League university campuses. At HI + LOW.

Vic’s lunch safari and day safari, where her and her friends go to a neighborhood wander around until they find somewhere to eat they’ve never been, is my kind of safari.

Amanda’s awesome vintage jumpsuit put me in a frenzy of searching for one just like it, until I sadly remembered my long torso and short legs do not like jumpsuits. I can dream.

Distributing surplus commodities. St. Johns, Arizona, October 1940. Reproduction from color slide. Photo by Russell Lee. Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943. via Stephanie

Art on Governor’s Island by Jenna at sweetfineday. The island is definitely more crowded this year (bummer) but I think we need to go back to see this.

It’s pretty impossible for me to contain my jealousy for Elisabeth’s new country house. Really, really impossible.

and some bits from me…

this week's pop

This week’s pop: mango lassi. I made mango lassi (suuuuper easy) and poured the liquid into my awesome new Zoku popsicle maker. While mango lassi isn’t the most refreshing thing ever (all that yogurt and such) it makes for a delicious, slightly savory-like popsicle that’s perfect after dinner.

new glasses
I’m not usually a fan of posting a big picture of my mug here, but…I got a new pair of Warby Parker glasses! While I love my other pair from them, they didn’t ever feel quite me. After my friend Shirley tweeted a cute photo of her new Fillmore pair, I took the plunge and bought them as well, being the style I had originally wanted but chickened out on. They came a few days ago, and they’re perfect. I like having the vintage vibe again like my Moscot pair, but they’re way more comfortable than those (which cost me an arm and a leg – these were only $95!) If you don’t know about Warby Parker, you can check out my post from a while ago. They are the best.

Over and out, friends. My film camera is coming out to play this weekend, so photos won’t be around til Tuesday. I have so many plans this weekend I can hardly contain my excitement. It’s probably a normal person’s amount of plans, but I’m kind of a shut-in lately, so uh, I’m excited. :) Have a great weekend!

mahna mahna factory. I was going to post individual items, but I think my favorite thing about the website is all the thumbnails lined up. Little treasures.

Music Monday

July 26th, 2010

Somehow Here We Go Magic released a new album in June and it quietly went under my radar, despite my love for them. Here they are performing an incredible acoustic version of one of the new songs, “Casual” for Yours Truly during the Pitchfork Music Festival recently. I could listen to it over and over.

(psst, google reader users: there’s a video in this post but it does not show up on google reader!)

The weekend started with us in a bit of a grumpy rut, I will admit. Just one thing after another not going right (though there was a tornado threat, which was exciting/scary.) But Sunday Billy made us get up early early early for our run, and we tried out the new park across the street. We missed our run last week for the first time, and I forgot how amazing it feels. Well, later on, not in the moment (blazing heat, while nuts to run in, makes you sweat off toxins like I never knew possible). We were energized after this, and cleaned our going-to-hell-messy apartment, helped each other finish projects, and I went and got my haircut when Billy went to work. I got caught in a crazy rainstorm, but something about it felt amazing – me on Saturday wouldn’t have handled it. I came home (with a very free neckline) and kept my ass kicking up – the temperature FINALLY went below 80 – made tons of necklaces and finished little things I’ve been putting off forever. I turned the a/c off, opened all the windows to let the breeze in, and watched the sunset. It doesn’t always work out like that, but sometimes when you get up early and grab control of your frustration and restlessness and tell it you’re not taking it’s shit anymore, it does wonders.

Also, I saw Inception again. I never see movies twice in the theater, but it’s just that good.

Friday Bits

July 23rd, 2010

Friday Bits is taking a new shape. Though I need to cut back on my weekly blogging, I still come across so many fantastic things out there on the internet, and still need the release of sharing. I can’t keep things to myself! So, inspired by fantastic round-up posts by ladies like Joanna and Melanie, I decided for Friday Bits to be a sharing place of the best finds from the week, plus I might occasionally share personal bits like before. It’s flexible. Hope you like the first post, friends!

Beautiful brooches by Studio Fludd at grijs.

BOOOOOOOM!’S Little Drifters project sounds fantastic, and I wish I could be in Vancouver for it! (photo above by Lenny, the inspiration for the project)

She has neither language nor discourse; but she creates tongues and hearts, by which she feels and speaks (Across America by ck/ck)

Japanese cat magazine. Need I say more?

And speaking of Fieldguided, I’m so so SO excited about her new series, where Anabela takes dreamy photos insider her friends’ homes. First up is the home of Melinda Josie. I want her to come to NYC on a field trip for this. We’ll have Canon A-1 adventures.

Jenny is kicking even more butt with her latest Wiksten creations. I love the new photos taken at her amazing studio (which I visited and had to contain my tears of jealousy). Doesn’t even look like Brooklyn, does it? The shop update was last night and no doubt all sold out, so you can’t yell at me for tempting you. Just pure inspiration, friends.

Something’s Hiding In Here Forage pop-up shop in progress. Sounds very fun.

Christina Tran modeled for Totokaelo and is the epitome of cuteness.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! ps. I used Instapaper this week to keep all my links in one place, instead of emailing myself and keeping ridiculous folders. So simple, I love it.

Mountain Man “Mouthwings” [part 1 of 3] from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

I discovered Mountain Man on NPR over the weekend. Such raw, stripped down music with gorgeous harmonies. Makes me miss choir.

Unintentional theme: hands at work. Arcade game playing, bleach tie-dying (fail), drink mixing with Lisa and Caroline, date night at Moto (mashed potato eating), Inception (damn, definite hand-wringing), necklace making, beard removing, way too much Best Coast listening (“there’s something about the summer/that makes me…moody.”)

Friday Bits: Peaches & Quality Over Quantity

July 16th, 2010

peach blueberry cornmeal biscuit cobbler
this week's pop

Last week was all about trying to figure out ways to eat watermelon in every meal, and this week it’s all about peaches. Peach blueberry cornmeal biscuit cobbler and peach ginger lemon popsicles. If you peel, pit, and chop a peach, stick it in a blender with a touch of water – it makes the most amazing juice. I knew right away a popsicle had to come out of this discovery. Peach lemonade would be amazing, too.

In other popsicle news, Wednesday night on twitter I presented the fantasy of having a Jetson’s-like contraption that would make me popsicles in minutes. Immediately swarms of people alerted me to this beauty which does just that. Compulsively ordered, super excited. Also, a lot of you asked where my current popsicle holders are from. I got them at Bed Bath & Beyond, but I don’t see them online. These look like they’re the same though.

Now to change the subject. You may have noticed that I’m posting less lately. I can’t quite place my finger on why, but I’m losing steam recently. While I hope it’s temporary (summer?), I’d like to more formally say that the blog is going to slow down a bit and focus on quality over quantity, at least for now. My goal is to always bring you Bits Of My Weekend, a music post, and Friday Bits, but Friday Bits is going to maybe be a bit more flexible – a mix of personal and general internet finds. Between a full time job and a jewelry business, blogging needs to be more casual for me or I will lose it. I’ve also been suffering from severe internet ADD (thanks for the link, Ian!) and a shopping/coveting addiction. I think stepping back will help those two problems ease up a bit. Most of my favorite blogs only post a few times a week – if even that, so I’m not worried about this blog going down the tube. And you shouldn’t either.

ps. Thanks for all your encouraging and funny comments about jury duty. And sorry for my defensive reply to those of you who thought people shouldn’t try to get out of jury duty. Being picked for a jury would actually be super interesting if it weren’t the busiest week EVER at work while we’re already short staffed and slammed. So, I was happy that I wasn’t picked, but someday I’d like to be. I got a lot of reading and necklace making done during the day, and actually enjoyed the day away from the internet immensely (after my defensiveness I decided to cut myself off from iPhone, ha).

Enjoy your weekend, everyone! Is anyone else going to see Inception? I’m not usually an opening-weekend kind of girl, but Lisa is a persuasive lady, and is going to get me drunk. What a good date. Also, Leo and JGL? Worth it. Sigh.

Bear Exercise

July 15th, 2010

This Bear Exercise poster by Steph Walker makes me smile.

There’s a great interview with Steph on Mint today. That bear illustration at the bottom kills me as well!
