Friday Bits

August 13th, 2010

Highlights from the blogland this week:

I’ve been trying to make a Fall wardrobe round-up on Polyvore for three days, with disastrous results and lots of sighing. Pillar Box Post made a round up much better than what was jumbled in my brain, so you can just ooh and ahh over hers. I’m especially fond of the camping theme. I can’t wait for boots (!), since I just used a little shop update money on these beauties at Pineapple Mint to replace my dying pair.

Dying to make this walnut & cranberry zucchini bread. Jeannette always has the best simple recipes.

Last week I daydreamed about Lily’s adventures, this week I’m daydreaming about Mette’s family trip that involved a teepee and gorgeous sunsets, among other things.

The new Happy Socks lookbook, shot by Backyard Bill*, is making me very excited about our upcoming trip to LA.

*this is according to The Selby’s twitter feed. There is no mention in the article that it was shot by him, but I don’t think Todd would make that up.

Opening Ceremony collaborations are rocking my world lately. Most recently the Fjällräven backpacks. So cute! A girl can never have too many backpacks, right?

Have a great weekend, everyone! I’m looking forward to a movie + manicure (gotta have a pro do it once in a while) + sandwich date with my friend Lauren. This is also the first weekend in a long time that I don’t have necklaces or freelance jobs to work on, so I see lots of guilt-free lounging happening. I’ll just lay in bed surrounded by pints of Ben & Jerry’s and magazines, blaring Steely Dan. Just kidding! Sort of…

SNAP

SNAP Dark & Stormy

Last year I declared my love for the deliciousness of Art In The Age’s ROOT liquor (along with half of the blogosphere) and this year I have a new boozy love: SNAP. While hanging out with the Num Num Girls a few weeks ago, they treated me to a taste. It was love at first sip (and sip and sip and sip…) I had to get some for myself. I used my blogging powers for good (reporting to you about delicious liquor is super important business) and got my lucky paws on some and made the best damn Dark & Stormy this side of the Rusty Knot (a top contender.) I used unfiltered ginger ale and spiced rum (spiced rum was not necessary, but it was what we had and worked just fine.) SNAP is a lot like ROOT, but instead of leaning towards a rootbeer flavor, it leans towards a gingersnap flavor. It tastes kind of like Christmas, really. The Dark & Stormy was Summer refreshing, but the fine folks at Art In The Age provided a list of delicious recipes, and one involving whiskey, bitters, orange juice and honey was the perfect Fall cocktail.

It’s available in the fine city of Philadelphia for purchase, but also online for some states where legal (sorry, Washington.)

PS. It’s also super delicious on vanilla ice cream.

PPS. Be careful friends, this stuff is deceivingly strong.

Music Monday

August 9th, 2010

So, in the shop update readying madness last night, I forgot to schedule a Music Monday post for this afternoon. I decided I’d just quietly skip it, but my persuasive friends on twitter encouraged me to just post the song that’s been stuck in my head for days. I mean, you gotta give the people what they want.

I love the way music videos for movie soundtrack songs have the movie strangely incorporated into the video. Especially in the 80s. Especially. Also, the girl in this video totally has hungry eyes. Well played.

It probably looks like all I did this weekend was eat and watch the sunset. Well, there was a lot of that, for sure, we’ve recently discovered that taking a picnic (by picnic I mean takeout) to Gantry Plaza Park and watching the sunset is just about as good as it gets, the absolute best (only? heh) part about living in Long Island City. But besides that, lots of important business was also taken care of that I let my camera take a break on. Like tracking down rare science fiction novels and cardamom iced coffee. Gathering lots of supplies (including a dozen bar/long-shaped donuts, which cannot be found at 3pm, apparently) for a video piece Billy is working on. Maneuvering the insane subway construction changes. Finally finishing my library book (can’t decide how I feel about it yet). And of course, all of Sunday was devoted to shop update preparing, except for a break to SOB MY HEAD OFF at the FNL season finale. I didn’t even get out of my “studio outfit” (really just pajamas) all day long. Luckily my assistant Wendy was right there by my side for any problems that arose, as you can see above. I like a good taking care of business weekend.

Shop Update Aug 2010
Preview for tomorrow’s shop update is now up in the shop!

Also, just a reminder to add photos to the flickr group! I don’t talk about it much so it’s a little on the empty side, but the photos that are there are fantastic! Keep ‘em coming!

Friday Bits

August 6th, 2010

Highlights from the blogland this week:

Are you following Lily’s amazing adventure across America with her husband and two dogs, pulling along a revamped Scamp? Dream trip, people, dream trip. This week she shared photos from Glacier National Park, a magical place that even impressed me when I was 14. Nothing impresses 14 year-olds! If you ever get the chance to visit, please do.

A while back Meighan shared this awesome “Haters Gonna Hate” gif by These Are Things I couldn’t get enough of. Then this week Julie shared a link to the print. The timing is so perfect, that bad boy is mine mine mine.

Really amazing work by Hernán Paganini over at Little Paper Planes.

bird watching chairMartha’s cat Fritz is constantly cracking me up. I mean, need I say more? Look at that pose.

I’m enamored with this Japanese margarine packaging at Hello Sandwich. I don’t even like margarine and I want it.

Camera time

And finally, Wendy was a little bummed out that she didn’t get much action in Bits Of My Weekend. Here we are checking our emails in our usual spot every morning. At the computer is the only time she will ever sit on my lap, and my lap only. Princess Wendy has rules.

Thank you for the very wonderful comments about haters and my photos. I wish I could shoot film every weekend, though weekends as fun as that are kind of rare. This weekend I’ll be slaving over Monday’s shop update, I haven’t done a big regular shop update in so long, I forgot how much work it is! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Finally an amazing, memorable summer weekend. A picnic while watching the sunset (that was actually last week, but close enough to the weekend). The Swell Season at Prospect Park with Lauren. A getaway (finally!) with a zipcar and good friends to Robert Moses Beach. A resulting terrible sunburn that left us immobile the rest of the day (who forgets sunscreen? that would be me). An epic Upper West Side adventure, led by Stephanie, with Lisa and Jessica for dosa and cardamom iced coffee (so good!), a trip to a big beautiful Michael’s craft store, bumping into someone wonderful at Steven Alan, flea market browsing, and lots of good conversation. I came home Sunday to a few very peaceful and breezy (no a/c needed!) hours alone to make necklaces, cry with Tim Riggins (boy can’t catch a damn break), and cuddle with Wendy. I’ve had some not so nice things said to me the past couple days on the internet, and getting these photos yesterday (along with all my amazing twitter friends) helped me pick myself up and say “screw ‘em, life is awesome right now.”

Drapes

August 3rd, 2010

I don’t normally post about something twice, but Melly has new drops and drapes in her shop, Greenlaundry, and I’m particularly fond of this beauty above. Too lovely not to share, no?

ps. the place that develops my film made a mistake and it won’t be ready til tonight. So, Bits Of My Weekend will come tomorrow morning. It will be more exciting that way, reliving a wonderful weekend on a Wednesday. (At least I keep telling myself that…)

Shop Update Heads Up

August 2nd, 2010

I know I’ve totally dragged my heels on this one, but the next shop update will (finally!) be Monday, August 9th at 8pm EST! There will be new indian summer necklaces (like the one above), braided ombré drops, brass drops, ombré crown sinnets, and the classic style with a request-your-length option for the chain because y’all seem to be on the fence on the length, which makes me also on the fence.

A preview of what will be in the update will be available Sunday evening (what is sold out in the shop right now will not necessarily be sold Monday), and an email to the newsletter subscribers will also go out Sunday.

Also, there are still Target necklaces available, if you don’t want to wait til Monday or want a double strand necklace.

As always I cannot take orders outside of the shop update. Thanks for your support, again and again.

Music Monday

August 2nd, 2010

I realize I’ve posted these songs at one point or another on this blog before, but I’ve been on a crazy vintage Elton John kick lately. I was reading an interview where the interviewer asked someone what song could they listen to any time, any day to put them in a good mood, and it made me think for a while about my own. Of course, Benny And The Jets all the way. Instant mood lifter for a “is it really Monday already?” Monday.
