Friday Bits

October 29th, 2010

Some favorite finds from the blogosphere this week…

Two lovely, affordable pieces at Fancy Fresh Cologne. via Andrea’s Pinterest

I love Brian’s post about medium-format photos. Oh how I’d love to take a Hassy out for a spin.

I feel like I’m the only person I know who didn’t really enjoy A Single Man, but I did enjoy the house in it. Which, lucky for those of you with extra 1.6 million clams, is for sale. via Freckle Farm

Very inspired by these Northern Plains necklaces on Nothing Is New.

File under: dream home inspiration. Sarah Illenberger’s home on Freunde von Freunden via SeeSaw

Lastly, I’m not feeling very in the spirit of Halloween this year, but Pia served up a splendid post of witchy images I love. All I can offer that is slightly as frightening is this photo of me when I was 3 or 4 with giant 80′s hair that I found the other night. Or pageant hair, as Sara pointed out. My mother was a hairdresser when I was a kid, what can I say? Terrifying. Anyone else have an awesome past hair photo to share? Point me in the direction of it in the comments.

Have a spooky weekend, friends!

Vintage Glasses

October 26th, 2010

MOD Vintage on Etsy has one of the best selections of vintage eyeglasses I’ve ever seen. Plus, they’re new old-stock, so they’re in perfect shape. A pair has been sitting in my Etsy favorites for a while now, so I can’t quite remember how I found them, but I suspect Alison had something to do with the discovery.

ps. If you live in NYC, this place in Chinatown will put prescription lenses in frames for super cheap – I had a vintage pair made into prescription sunglasses for $60. (thank you Emily!)

I can’t tell you what an extreme feeling of TGIF I felt Friday leaving work. I had such a crazy week, and I was incredibly excited about not having a plan in the world this weekend. Saturday we spent the day in Manhattan gallery hopping and wandering, but I didn’t even take a shower until 5pm on Sunday. I just got back into my pajamas afterward. But lest you think I was lazy. We got so much cleaning and organizing done, chicken roasting, and pumpkin bread making (and eating eating eating) – I barely sat still. Just, you know, in my pajamas.

Friday Bits

Some random goodies that have landed in my inbox + google reader lately…

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ll know how much I love the Cats Let Nothing Darken Their Roar Calendar. The 2011 is out now!

I love everything SeeSaw puts out, including their new letterpress calendar with beautiful metallic details.

The ladies at Wren emailed me to say they read my blog everyday. I thought, for reals? Because I want to wear your clothes everyday. Cape, be mine? (ps. I’m very excited that it’s been chilly enough to rock my own cape lately.)

Stunning, inspiring necklaces by Sara Borgegård at Ornamentum Gallery (lots of amazing jewelry there) on URPLE.

New edition on 20x200: Balloons (Midtown, Manhattan)
Lastly, I thought this photo by Younga, a new print available on 20×200, was fitting for this week because it marks my three-year blogiversary (do you hate that word? oh, you). It seems so very long ago that Andrea and I decided to give the blog world a try, inspired by Mav & Stephanie’s old blog, Port2Port – two friends on opposite coasts sharing with each other. I miss Andrea in this space, and well, in the real world too, but someday I’ll talk her into coming back, or starting something on her own. Anyway, I just wanted to thank all of you for making this blog what it is. It’s truly a pleasure to meet amazing, amazing people, online and offline, that I may never would have connected with without this blog. I also may have never taken photography back up, and don’t even get me started on my jewelry. I know I don’t post as often as I used to, but I have something up my sleeve in the works to start sharing more again that I’m hoping takes shape in the new year, or even sooner. I know y’all need your shoe fix here and there.

ps. the Mad Men conversation is just brilliant, you guys. Let’s chat like that more often.

Weekend Bits Continued

October 22nd, 2010

I was going to put the photos that I didn’t post on Tuesday from my weekend in today’s Friday Bits post, but it seemed too random. So, a separate post.

Let’s Talk Mad Men

October 20th, 2010

**I’m going to talk about the Mad Men finale, so stop right here if you haven’t watched it!  You’ve been warned**

I would like to derail my usual blog topics and talk about my favorite TV show. (Again, MAD MEN SPOILERS!!!) Did anyone else scream loudly WHAT THE F@#$%??? WHAT THE F@#$%??? WHAT THE F@#$%??? Like, 18 times, watching the Mad Men finale? I finally had time to watch it last night, and pulled the covers over my head (we watch TV on our laptop in bed) in sheer terror of that marriage proposal. The complete insanity of it all. The MADNESS. But I don’t think I hated it – I just can’t full absorb what happened I’m in such shock (but damn, I love a good shocker finale!) I also wanted to strangle Betty for the 5th time this season, despite her not making too many appearances. Overall I loved this season to pieces. The episode where Peggy and Don bonded was one of my favorite moments in television history. I loved watching Don try to change, Peggy try new things, and other characters fall apart and pick themselves back up again. I can’t wait to see what happens next season. What did you think? Tell me everything.

PS. Did you know that the slightly creepy neighbor kid Glen is Matt Weiner’s son?

In related news, Purple Deer is selling a Johnathan Logan dress that’s pretty much identical to one of Dr. Faye Miller’s dresses. Someone should buy this amazingness and go as a heartbroken Faye for Halloween. Runny mascara, telephone in hand. Or just wear it every day because it’s so, so beautiful.

Tattoos + cuddling + perfect Fall weather + eating myself stupid + haircut + a long walk home (screw you, G shuttle bus, I like walking) + superbly amazing Supper Club (where I drank myself stupid, thanks to Kelly) + too many photos to choose from.

The why behind the tattoo will come later, but I will say for now that it’s for New York City, and someday soon something from Seattle will go on the other arm. And then I will run out of arms for the next chapter, so maybe a tramp stamp. I kid, I kid. I know I still owe you a next chapter post, but things are still being sorted and it’s still too soon to say yea or nay here on ye olde blog.

1010 Project

October 18th, 2010

Last Sunday I participated in a really fun project that launches today with perfect timing, since my film photos from this weekend won’t be ready ’til tomorrow. Victoria asked 10 photographers around the world to take 10 photos on 10/10/10, called 101o Project. I’m in pretty amazing company, and looking at the results, I wish so badly I could have taken film photos like almost everyone else, but I knew I would be too busy to focus on finishing 36 shots for a roll. But I’m still happy with my shots, and I love that we all have a similar aesthetic and the photos go well together.

Thank you for having me, Vic!

I love this gorgeous, haunting cover of Feist’s “Limit To Your Love” by James Blake, which reader Lianna shared with me over the weekend. The video is pretty great, too.
