Music Monday

December 13th, 2010

Last week I asked on twitter if anyone wanted to make me a road trip mix and Andrea pointed out that her new mix, Fantastic, had some great road trip worthy tunes. It’s a goody and I’m especially in love with the song “True Blue” by Dirty Beaches on it. I looked them up and I love that they’re described as “minimalist rockabilly”. Rad.

ps. if anyone else would like to make & email me a (digital) road trip mix, I’d be much obliged. I’ll return the favor with a mix once I’m settled in! Leaving on the 19th.

Just like Sandra has been saying lately to her city, a slow farewell. Slow until yesterday I realized out-loud, “this is the last Sunday we will spend lounging around in this bed.” On Friday, what seemed like every soul I’ve ever met in NYC came to wish us goodbye at LIC bar and we took over most of the bar. I learned my lesson last week though and only drank two beers. Besides, I wanted to be coherent, knowing full well that it might be the last time I see some of those people. Sure, there’s always the possibility of coming back, and there’s always the possibility of visitors in LA, but I’ve made a cross-country move once already so I know that’s not always the way it works. But, miraculously I only cried once. It was a truly wonderful time.

The rest of the weekend was spent taking care of boring tasks and lots of reading, and one glorious meal at Walter Foods (please have their [fancy!] fried chicken, it’s mind blowing). We closed up the very last box – ready for FedEx in a couple days, and our week of living out of a few suitcases and with just a couple dishes begins. Lots of takeout is ahead of us. The walls are bare, it feels real.

Please don’t go anywhere this week because a best of NYC through Bits Of My Weekend is coming every day. Talk about making me weepy…

Kelly of Nothing Is New took us on a virtual visual road trip over the summer, exploring photo archives. It was truly amazing, and now there’s a beautiful (and super affordable) book I will be promptly buying after moving.

Arlie of Urban Revisions shared some of her new glass jewelry with me and they are amazing. I have one from her clear glass necklaces and love it to pieces. Arlie is also making a cross-country move to LA, just one month after me. It’s a fun coincidence, I do believe.

N.E.E.T. The Book is available for purchase now (scroll to the bottom of that post for the purchasing options), and yours truly has a spread! I haven’t seen it yet as I can’t order a book until after we move, but I will be sure to share it with you when I get my greedy paws on it. I’m a featured “N.E.E.T. People” alongside some pretty stellar ladies. There are five different covers by different illustrators, I’m definitely going for Gemma Correll’s as I love that girl.

In a recent effort to choose a new fragrance that every single girl I know does not also wear (Burberry Brit and Coco Mademoiselle, I’m looking at you), I decided to order a sample kit from MCMC. I’ve grown to really love my Nationale scent, but want to try something a little fresher/less spicy to alternate with. I love the sweet little tags on the MCMC samples, and I’m having a hard time choosing! They all smells so good. I’m going to wait to make a decision until after we move in case the change of weather and scenery makes me want something different (highly likely!). But right now I love Hunter best, which is funny as it’s the spiciest and darkest scent of the kit – but not nearly as much as Nationale. Maybe the bitter cold is influencing that…

Have a great weekend, friends! Monday is my last Bits Of My Weekend post from NYC! Then I’ll be sharing my favorite NYC moments from Bits all week (oh lord is it making me SAD putting them together!). After that I’ll be on a two-week internet break while a former For Me, For You regular fills in for me here.

I’ll warn you now that next weekend will look just as boring as this one, for Taking Care of Business will be our A #1 priority in the coming two weeks. But, I can’t pretend that’s the only reason my weekend was pretty uneventful. Saturday I learned that I cannot hold my liquor like I used to and spent most of the day bed paying for a wonderful Friday evening saying goodbye to some of the wonderful bloggers I’ve met in NYC over drinks (emphasis on that plural there) at Dutch Kills. I didn’t even drink that much, but those drinks are dangerously strong and delicious, and again with what I said about holding my liquor these days… While I wish I’d resisted that last drink, it was a great night and I got pretty misty-eyed walking (er, stumbling?) home in the freezing cold. So, Saturday I spent the day plowing through The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo while packing here and there and eating saltines. Sunday I cleared my beloved desk out to sell* (more misty-eyedness) and made up for that lazy Saturday with lots of Taking Care of Business. I have to say that I wish we were leaving next weekend rather than in two weeks because we’re so ready. But instead I get to live off of a handful of clothing and two pairs of shoes (a serious issue for me) while the rest if packed and ready to go. I’m anxious to say the least. That’s better than completely under-prepared.

Anyway, soon you won’t have to listen to me talk about moving and we’ll get back to fun adventures. Soon! Also, I have a very special guest blogger scheduled for my two-week break over the holidays. Fist! Pump!

*We’re selling my wonderful vintage mid-century desk and matching side table if anyone is interested. This is the only piece of furniture I own that seriously pains me to leave behind. LIC pick-up only, CL email goes to Billy, but you can email me instead if you’d rather. Sold!

Friday Bits

December 3rd, 2010

Before sharing some favorites from around the blogosphere this week, I just want to thank you all for a successful and wonderful shop update last night! Necklaces sold out faster than they have recently, which I think I have the holidays and Cool Hunting to thank for that (or for you, blame?). Sorry for those of you who couldn’t snag one for gifts you were planning on. Your emails are so sappy sad story right now it’s kind of cracking me up (because we’re not saving lives here folks), but I believe our move in two weeks (ahhh!) is a good excuse for not making more. New necklaces will probably be a while because of the move, but as always, stay tuned. ps. there’s ONE leather & lucite left, which I had not noticed until now. Snag that baby up!

Onward!
