Friday Bits

April 29th, 2011

Friday already? Hooray! My mom is in town so I’m looking forward to getting my shop on as I need to do a last minute wardrobe assessment before London next week and no one can shop til you drop like my mother.

Good things on the internet this week:

1. Vic is doing interviews with those of us taking part in Other People’s Houses, so you can read more about my thoughts approaching the show, plus more interviews!
2. I love this sweet story about Karie’s mom hand making her a care bear when she was a kid. via Tamara
3. I’m really into farro lately. Do you eat it often? I love the texture. I also love risotto, so this farro and millet risotto is right up my alley.
4. Pictory: The Stories Of Handmade, a collaboration between Etsy and Pictory Magazine featuring beautiful images and stories about handmade, is amazing. Get a lot of that insane handcut illustration! via Alison
5. Jane’s new shop, Coterie, looks pretty amazing!
6. A wonderful Glass Ghost track, “Like A Diamond” re-imagined with Sharon Van Etten on vocals.
7. Genius Reggie Watts poster for the Sasquatch Music Festival by DKNG Studios. Oh how I wish I could be there! Lucky Northwesterners.
8. Martin asks you to print his pdf onto violet paper, hang it up somewhere, and take a photo. I need to find the perfect palm tree this weekend… via Anabela
9. Andrea posted some awesome photos of her trip to LA last month on flickr! This is my future band photo.

Weekly Music

April 27th, 2011

I know I just posted a mix last week, but I feel like my mixes and my music of choice lately has been a bit too mellow, and after a stressful couple weeks, I was majorly in need of creating a sunshine-y happy dance mix. You know the saying “dance like no one is watching”? Well, my motto is “dance only when no one is watching.” I will not dance in front of anyone unless there is a large tropical drink with multiple straws and many shots in it that you light on fire at a drag queen bar (inside story for only Lauren to understand), but I dance in my apartment pretty much all the time. We tested this mix out this weekend, and I’ve been driving to work with it on, and it’s a winner. A serious mood lifting winner. It was hard to cut it down to 8 for 8tracks, but I’ve listed the rest of the songs in case you want to make your own. I don’t make downloadable mixes because I got a scary cease and desist email once and I don’t like confrontation as I am a true Libra. UPDATE: Ok, thank you Verdrana for letting me know you can upload more than 8 tracks onto 8tracks. I swear you couldn’t do that before! So, now the bonus tracks are on the mix as well to jam to!

Let’s get to the dancing, shall we?

Gamma Ray – Beck
Zap Zap – Cut Copy
When We’re Dancing – Twin Shadow
Feather – Little Dragon
Smiley Faces – Gnarls Barkley
Hercules Theme – Hercules And Love Affair
Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
Ladies Of The World – Flight Of The Conchords
Beverly Kills – Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti
Strange Overtones – David Byrne and Brian Eno
Sound and Vision – David Bowie
Take It Easy On Kathy At Least She Can Dance – Andrew Graham & Swarming Branch
Ice Cream – New Young Pony Club
Keeping It Moving – A Tribe Called Quest
All Around and Away We Go – Twin Sister
Let’s Call It Off (Girl Talk Remix) – Peter Bjorn & John
Odessa – Caribou
Another Day – Jamie Lidell
You Take My Breath Away – The Knife feat. Jenny Wilson

Guest Series: Bits Of My Weekend with Diana Moss

April 26th, 2011

Hey friends, welcome to the very first installment of a new monthly guest series where I invite my favorite people from around the web to share their own Bits Of My Weekend! I’m pretty excited about this because there is some seriously endless talent and inspiration out there on the blogs I read. First up is one of my absolute favorite bloggers right now that I know many of you are also majorly in love with: Diana of Miss Moss! I was excited to have her because she rarely posts personal photos, but when she does, I can tell that her talents aren’t just with her impressive curatorial skills. Diana lives in South Africa, a place I admittedly don’t know as much about as I should, so I love seeing and hearing about it. How beautiful are these photos? I’m glad someone around here is getting out of their apartment. Onward!

From Diana:

Every year my entire family heads out to my parent’s holiday house in a little coastal town called Betty’s Bay for the Easter long weekend. I love this time of year because autumn finally arrives in South Africa – and there’s no better place to experience the change in season than being by the sea.

Also, you know, Easter = chocolate. There was so much chocolate. Which meant we had to balance it out by actually being active – going on plenty of bike rides, walking on the beach, trekking through the botanical gardens and scavenging for treasures in local vintage shops. But as soon as the weather turned we’d be drinking red wine, lying in front of the fire and falling asleep in the afternoon (classic holiday behaviour.)

The entire weekend could be summed up by those baboons we came across in the gardens – warming themselves in the sun, having a bit of a nap, getting a head scratch… It was kind of perfect, really.

Advertising + a little more often

April 25th, 2011

heart
random old film photo to show you that I heart you guys and that I got nothin when it comes to visuals for this post.

You may or may not have noticed over yonder on the old sidebar that I have spots open now for little advertisements. Gasp! Some think that I am a die-hard no advertising activist, but in fact I just never thought it was for my blog or that I had the time to deal with it. It did take quite a long time to decide and I did take into consideration all the people I would offend with it as I do get emails from time to time thanking me for not including advertising on my blog. But, of course, in the end it’s my blog, and this is all part of something Kelly calls “making it happen“, which I like very much. Selling jewelry more often is also part of making it happen, and though I will not be quitting my job and moving into a penthouse (wait, do people enjoy living in penthouses?) after putting a few ads on my blog, it’s the step in the direction of building something for myself rather than flying by the seat of my pants all the time with the projects I involve myself in.

So if you’re interested in advertising, please email my new special email inbox advertise at forme-foryou.com and I will send you this super fancy pdf I made that I’m pretty proud of. I’m keeping a small, tight ship over there of only six ads starting May 1st.

On another note of making it happen, check back on this blog a little more often because I’m going to be posting just a little bit more often. Starting tomorrow is a new monthly guest series I’ve excited about, and my first guest is pretty awesome. I guess I just wanted to make that announcement because sometimes I go to post off-schedule and it feels odd.

Anyway, thank you for your un-ending support of For Me, For You, and let’s make this happen*.

* I actually have no idea what making it happen results in, but I hope it someday involves me never having to leave my pajamas, eating cheddar bunnies all day.

UPDATE: Thank you for all your awesome encouragement and love! I realized that I may have confused people with Kelly’s link that I’m leaving my job or working less. That is not the case at all, and I will in fact be busier now more than ever in perusing my side projects (blog, jewelry, etc) more. Sorry for the confusion! I hope this doesn’t mean people think I will respond to emails faster… haaaa.

Bits Of My Weekend

After a pretty stress-filled week or so, I forced myself to relax on Saturday – finished up Bossypants on the beach, finished Twin Peaks (to creep me out Will talks in the backwards voice, which I find the creepiest thing on the planet), read the insane pile of magazines that’s built up on our table (we only subscribe to two weekly ones, but damn), made homemade lip scrub and nearly finished my first week of no shampoo (this is how I’m doing it). Sunday was getting down to business day – placed a massive wholesale order of jewelry supplies (getting serious!), scheduled three blog posts and a guest post for someone else, made a dance mix (coming Wednesday!), sent out contracts for projects. Hot damn, it felt good, even if I did miss out on Easter candy. Any spare Cadbury creme eggs? I have a shameless love for them.

Friday Bits

April 22nd, 2011

A quick Friday Bits for a busy busy week, posted a little earlier since some of you are heading out for Easter. I will in fact be busy busy until Anabela and I set off on our adventure in less than two weeks, so I am counting down the days and hoping she plans the whole trip for me. Just kidding! Kind of.

1. So much going on in this incredible necklace by Kelsey Quan. via JC Report.
2. It took me 100 years to decide which tote bag I wanted from Fabric & Handle because they are all so awesome and affordable. Adjustable leather straps? So awesome.
3. Explordonia gives me a design boner. There, I said it. via designworklife.
4. Contemplating these Keds saddle shoes pretty hard. via Alison.
5. Volcano skirt. Need I say more? via I’m Revolting.
6. Gorgeous photos by Eric Weeks on Butter & Brass. I miss blogging about photographers, I need to get back on that.
My flickr favorites is turning into cat central, astutely pointed out by Jamie, who had her baby yesterday!

Have a wonderful weekend, friends! I’m going to force myself to maybe possibly relax this weekend.

I’ve probably made it clear by now that I’m a huge fan of cover songs, so I thought it was high time to make a mix of some of my favorites. This mix is a little chill and leans on the ladies, but I like it on this cloudy morning. I’d love to hear what you favorite cover songs are too, as I love finding ones I haven’t heard of. It was actually kind of hard digging through all of my music finding them and remembering, so I’m sure you’ll bring some up I forgot about that I’ll be kicking myself for.

1. Au Revoir Simone – Oh! You Pretty Things (David Bowie)
2. Taken By Trees – My Boys (Animal Collective)
3. Cat Power – I Found A Reason (Velvet Underground)
4. Adele – Lovesong (The Cure)
5. The Books ft. Jose Gonzalez – Cello Song (Nike Drake)
6. Neko Case – Runnin Out Of Fools (Aretha Franklin)
7. James Blake – Limit To Your Love (Feist)
8. Susanna And The Magical Orchestra – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

Bits Of My Weekend

April 18th, 2011

Ojai beauty
we're fancy, huh?
blurry town
soho house nerds
oh, this is yours?
hustle
peeping the crazy

I spent Wednesday through Saturday on a work retreat in Ojai, the most beautiful place on the planet, and didn’t take many photos as I was too busy nervously talking to 500 strangers, listening to occasionally amazing talks, drinking so much I could barely make it to the 8am meeting on Friday, and wondering if I was secretly at a cult meeting and when the koolaid would be passed out. Kidding! I spent the rest of my weekend responding to 800 emails and witnessing pure mania unfold in Venice. Phew, I need another weekend to sleep.

Things

April 13th, 2011

give
summer feet
Old film scans I never uploaded. They’re kind of related.

Hey friends, I’m spending the rest of the week at a work retreat, so I’m cutting out early this week as scheduling posts beyond today’s is not in the cards for me. In case you email me, I probably won’t have email access until Saturday evening.

But here are two things of me elsewhere:

- Guest post over at Miss Moss on things I like right now. My favorite blog right now, so I was pumped when Diana asked me to contribute, natch. Who doesn’t want to read about me casually mentioning that I want to put kittens in my mouth? No one.

- Shoulda mentioned this earlier, but hey! Stuff! Wendy has a guest post over at Lola is a Beauty, where all you obsessive Wendy fans can get your fix. Is it too far to write a guest post entirely about your cat? No way, that blog rules and so does that series.

See you next Monday!

Other People’s Houses

April 11th, 2011

Finally I can tell you all why Anabela and I are going to London in May, and what those outtakes were from last week! Victoria got everyone from the 10/10/10 project back together to take photos for another project, on the topic of home*, and the photos will be on display in London. If you live in the area, please join Vic, Anabela, Brian and I at the opening on May 5th. I will have terrible jet lag but a guaranteed stupid grin on my face all night. Eventually all of the photos will be on the website, and I’ll be sure to let you all know when it’s up, for those who can’t see them in person.

*now do you see why I got all caught up in the subject?
