A pretty low-key weekend. Clearly, good food was had, in our attempt to be people who are wise with their money and make more food at home. Errands were also ran, books were read, drinks were made, and a relatively smooth and almost therapeutic shop update went well, besides accidentally printing all of the shipping labels with my Queens return address on accident. Sorry if you bought something and got 18 emails about shipping. After a bit of yelling, angry tweeting, and possibly some pen throwing, things are all squared away now. I also saw a very old friend from high school who just moved here, and listened to so much José González while doing every single thing this weekend, I felt like I was in an indie drama where Gael García Bernal played my sexy boyfriend and we had a passionate, yet complicated relationship revolving around me running away from my troubled past. At least that’s the plot my brain cooked up…

Friday Bits

April 8th, 2011

On my radar this week

1. Collette Ishiyama – Collect your jaw from you table after you look at this beautiful jewelry. via Andrea’s Pinterest
2. Mackenzie’s twinnerversarie post made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I always wanted a twin as a kid, I find them incredibly fascinating.
3. My weekly “I want to go to there” feeling, brought to you by Place + Taste, as it is actually somewhere I can go easily. I’ll go anywhere that has animals such as ostriches. Or alpacas, for that matter.
4. Serious shivers down my spine upon listening to Kimbra. DANG, girl! Those pipes, that stage presence. Thank you Gotta A Girl Crush.
5. Awesome Sass & Bide dress at Pixie Market.
6. Sally’s hanging glass containers she modified would make an excellent DIY project, somehow. I know, filed under: DIY projects that fill my brain endlessly and never, ever get made.

And now, for something completely different. Hello friends, how was your week? Mine was a bit crazy, and I’m pretty damn excited that today is Friday. I want to start by thanking you for your concerned comments, emails, and tweets about my vague sadness mentioned on Sunday and Monday. To know that not only friends, but complete strangers worry about Will and I only further solidifies that feeling you all gave me last week of a sense of community and love. We lost someone in Will’s family to cancer on Saturday evening, and while I debated endlessly all week about sharing that personal information as it’s not particularly mine to share, I just wanted to put it out there as I do usually share with you guys so many things going on in my life. That’s as much as I feel comfortable about going into it, and again, I thank you so much for your concern. Sharing troubling things online is such a tricky thing, a thin line between disrespectful/tacky and honesty. I know that some people can feel like their blogs can be a burden, but mine is anything but. You guys are always there for me, judgment free. It’s been six months since I got a nasty comment, in fact! (Knock on wood.)

Have a wonderful, wonderful weekend, everyone.

Weekly Music

April 7th, 2011

I’ve decided to turn Music Monday into Weekly Music as Monday it’s already enough work to pull Bits Of My Weekend Together.

José González – “Teardrop” – I’m really loving José lately, especially his covers (Heartbeats is another goodie), and this was probably my very favorite Massive Attack song back in the day.

Did I ever properly express my love for Adele here? 21 was on repeat so much a few weeks ago I almost threw up, but I took a break and now feel ready to listen to it again. “He Won’t Go” is my favorite song on the album. The beat is amazing, and the part where there’s a pause before the beat starts up again brings shivers down my spine. I love driving while singing this song, like I’m in a music video.

I got my grubby paws on an advance copy of Fleet Foxes new album, Helplessness Blues, due out soon, and I think “Lorelai” is my favorite song on the album. I had forgotten how many of Robin’s babies I wanted to have til I heard this song.

Shop Update Heads Up

April 5th, 2011

The next shop update will be Sunday, April 10th at 12PM PST/3PM EST (just to be clear since I’m on PST now). This update is the classics only – just handwoven friendship styles – short chains and a few long chains, thick woven (as pictured above) and TONS of brass drops. A preview of everything that will be for sale will be up by Saturday at the latest – I’ll send an email reminder out to the newsletter subscribers – what’s in the shop now does not reflect the color choices that will be available on Sunday, there will be tons of different colors as I went a little crazy, not making a single handwoven necklace the same color.

And I promise shop updates will never be this far and few between again! In fact, I hope to have them much more often this year, if I can swing it.

This weekend was strange, full of happiness and excitement and friends and burgers and (more) board games. But, also, sadness. And that is all I have to say about that, for now, my friends. I want you to stop what you are doing and go tell your parents (or stand-in parents) that you love them, okay? I did.

I’m sorry it’s been so emotional around here lately! But Wendy is cheering us up with her bed-lump ways.

(I like to use vimeo, but the wait for the video to process was over an hour, and we all need Wendy time stat!)

Home, continued

I don’t quite know where to start with thanking all of your for your heartfelt, touching, honest, wise, amazing, holy crap where did you all come from comments on my home post. And emails. And tweets. Not only did you give me so much to think about, but I’ve never felt less alone in my life. Good god, you guys, we are all in the same boat in life! I do want to point out for some of you who sounded like you may have thought I’m feeling pretty bummed out right now, but I assure you that I’m not Charlie Brown-ing up the streets of LA lately. When people ask me how LA is, I respond, “great!” because life here is totally a-ok right now in the grand scheme of things.

Things that are good, things that feel right in my home right now: jaw dropping sunsets, a strong, delicious drink and a boyfriend who makes you the best sandwiches in all the land.

maple sour

Have a drink with me? It’s been a long week, and this is my very favorite, ever:

Maple Sour
2 oz whiskey or bourbon (I prefer Makers Mark, or Knob Creek)
1/2 oz lemon (if you use a meyer lemon [yum], use a little more as it’s not as sour)
1/2 oz maple syrup (if you are a whiskey newb or wuss, use a little more)

Pour over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake the shit out of it. Strain into a glass. Garnish with a lemon peel if you’re fancy, huh/have too much time on your hands/are trying to impress someone. Be careful, they are dangerously delicious.

If you don’t drink, and/or still need a little pick-me-up, watch this.

Friday Bits? Maybe next week. Have a wonderful weekend!
