Bits Of My Weekend
I think I can safely say with only a slight hint of drama queen that this has been a pretty terrible week. Getting my wisdom teeth removed has resulted in the worst pain I have ever felt and an experience I would like to put behind me already, but the pain is still here to stay and I’m just ticking off missed days at work and weekend hours I should have been spending on freelance projects. But I finally decided to deal with the pain and take advil instead of vicodin as that was resulting in me literally losing my mind and lots of weight, and today I feel much more positive and ready to be on the upswing!
But despite barely leaving my bed for 5 days, somehow I pulled my shit together and put a scarf over my puffy face (Penelope style) and we got ourselves a new apartment in East Hollywood. Kind of the sweetest deal ever: we can move in whenever we want even though we won’t pay til the 15th, it’s the biggest apartment I’ve ever had, cheaper than our rent now, a beautiful old historic building with TONS of awesome character (french windows! checkered tile! a vanity in the bathroom!), two walk-in closets, and this cool huge fire escape that’s more like a deck that we can grow stuff on. We wanted to try for Silverlake or Los Feliz, but all the places we saw were too expensive for our budget and nothing was as cool as this place. Plus we are technically only a couple blocks away from Los Feliz, and less than a mile away from the Silverlake junction (that’s what bikes are for!), so it’s a fair trade to me. Also, look who are neighbors are in that last photo! I know, don’t be too jealous. I’m well on my way to being besties with Tom and Katie.
Anyway, excitement over the new apartment is really keeping me going and I hope to be a semi-normal human again soon! Stay tuned tomorrow as I have a weekend guest blogger! Someone who had a real weekend, too. Ha. Thanks for all the well wishes, friends.

sorry to hear about your surgery. i got mine out around 12 years old and while I was the puffiest patient my doctor said he had ever had, the pain wasn’t horrendous. in college, i took care of my friend who got his out – taking him to and from the surgery appt. i tucked him into bed and left to get ice cream, jell-o, etc. returning about 4 hours later, i expected him drugged up, in bed resting. Instead he was up, lucid and acting like nothing happened. that was his TOTAL recovery! not fair!
rad apt! it looks like it has a lot of charm and character. can’t wait to see what you do with it.

Your new apartment looks amazing! It’s basically exactly what I’ve been looking for here in Seattle with 0% luck. All of that natural light…heavenly! Congrats on such a find–maybe that makes up at least a little bit for your hellish wisdom teeth experience?

I LOVE your new apartment! I can’t wait to see how y’all move in & make it your own. Sorry to hear about your wisdom teeth being such a pain. That Scientology church is amazing in its huge scariness (or is that just your camera angle?). And I really enjoy the Quiet Wendy. Your pictures of her always make me want to have a cat again.

I’m so sorry to hear what a rough time you’ve had of the wisdom teeth (in no small part because I have to schedule a removal of mine in the next 6 months!)
But, what a nice distraction – a gorgeous new place. I love all those windows!

Ugh … wisdom teeth. When I had mine out, I had a bad reaction to both the pain medication and the anti-swelling medication and thus a very gnarly five days. I couldn’t take anything or eat anything, and I missed work for a week. It was awful.
On the bright side, you only have to do it once! The apartment looks great. Feel better soon!

dude, as soon as i saw that scientology building i knew exactly where you’re at. SUCH A GOOD LOCATION! even though it’s west of vermont that’s basically los feliz-adjacent. you’re so close to original Zankou and Jitlada (thai town!) and Wackos (best gift shop ever) and square one (delish brunch!) and Jumbo’s clown room (HAHAHAHAH! but seriously fun!) and GRIFFITH PARK!! aww, sometimes i miss living in LA-proper. but then i think about parking……
congrats!! feel better soon!

I know exactly where that is too! I looked at that building when I was looking for a place earlier this year. So cute and I loved all the windows. Welcome to the East side, I think you’ll like it way more than Venice.

love the new apt! woah pretty. plus, the added bonus of a built-in vanity. *sigh* i keep telling my boyfriend that’s the kinda place he+i should get…but we’ll take what we can get!
i hope you start feeling better from your surgery – wisdom teeth are so horrible to get out in summer! i had mine out the day before halloween, so you can imagine how awesome that was. no candy for me.

Giiirrrlll. Those are some strong words about the advile vs. Vicodine. I’ve had the teeth pulled too…And if I didn’t have my Vic I was a ragging bitch during that time. You’re too brave. But as for the new place! Congrats! That’s a super score in Cali with the moving in whenever you want too.

I have to get my wisdom teeth out in a few months, and I am terrified. Hopefully you’ll be feeling better soon, so a) you can feel better. obviously b) i wont have a nervous breakdown because of reading this. It’ll be worth it…. right? As for the new apartment, did you pull a Mr. Big when you walked in? “So This is where they keep the light!”

Fack. I literally JUST added ‘wisdom teeth extraction’ to my to-do list. I’ve been putting it off for two or three years, and I think, after reading this, I’m going to put it off a few more. Blahhh. I’m such baby.
Congrats on the new place! I absolutely love the windows and rounded doorways.

Wow, I love all the natural light in that apartment. I’m jealous!!
I had a really bad experience getting my wisdom teeth out too (I was allergic to the pain killers they prescribed for me), and I only ended up getting two out! Still have another two to go, so I feel your pain. It’s not a very nice experience. I hope the rest of your recovery goes super quick!

Hi there, Kate –
I’ve lurked here for a long while, brought over by ESB or someone, and I read more intensely once you moved to LA where I now live. Now I’m commenting because I think it’s too weird that I am also looking for a new place, and I saw the ad for your new one! Quelle coincidence. I hope you love it. It wasn’t the right location for me, but it sure is pretty.

I’m sorry to hear about your tooth pain! Has anyone recommended arnica to you? You can take it in pill form or they make this nice soothing gel (or cream!) to put directly on your face. It helps with swelling, bruising, and general pain. I had my wisdom teeth taken out many moons ago, and it helped me tremendously. Both my sister and I passed out from the vicodin (she managed to hit her face and require stitches! On top of the teeth being out!) ‘cuz that stuff is ROUGH.
I’m sure you’re sick of all the “soft foods” you’re eating…hope you feel better soon and get to enjoy your new digs.
Cheers,
mindi

That is one beautiful apartment! Congratulations!
I hope your teeth/mouth feel better. I had my wisdom teeth removed just over 10 years ago. It was brutal. I ate a lot of hot fudge sundaes from Dairy Queen and french fries. I don’t remember much. My Dad rented “Henry Fool” for me and I think I spaced out during the whole thing, but thought it was cool he would rent an arty movie for me. Anyhow, glad to hear you’re on the mend.
