Bits Of My Weekend

I can’t share photos from the wedding I shot with you yet, but I took a few pretty shots of the farm that the wedding was at while testing lighting and such without people that I can share, so you can get a glimpse of how pretty it was there. Plus a photo of the cat we catsat for in Brooklyn:) What I can tell you is that I don’t know how fulltime wedding photographers do it. It was so exhausting, especially being the only shooter at such a big, long wedding. Exciting, for sure, but I’m still beat! Thank god for Will coming with me to be my photo “caddy” and a good person to bounce ideas off and charm it up, despite the fact that he was secretly so sick he almost left in the middle of the wedding (cue panic attack). I owe him the world.

It was wonderful to be in New York again, albeit briefly, but just those few days spent there solidified our feeling good in our decision to leave. Which is nice because I was really worried that I’d get there and be a mess of emotions and regret. Maybe I would have been had we more time to see all the old places we loved? But it was so nice seeing a few old friends and doing something new and exciting. I love taking photos and it was a nice change to capture moments for someone else instead of myself.

Friday Bits

September 9th, 2011

Because I’m out own town, for today’s Friday Bits I thought I’d have the lovely ladies behind the awesome blog (and magazine!) Got A Girl Crush, Andrea and Meg, share with us their picks for the week. Take it away, ladies!

MEG’S PICKS:

1. Got those burned-out of the city, wanderlust blues? Well, Cabin Porn, doesn’t help–but it does inspire you to start saving your pennies for that quiet place somewhere. Sigh…

2. OBSESSED is an understatement for the the new female super-group, WILD FLAG (consisting of Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony, Rebecca Cole, and Janet Weiss). Their first full-length album just happens to be streaming on NPR “First Listen” until you can snap up the real deal come Tuesday (9/13)!

3. How cute is the Maurine & Noreene flickr set that documents a fashionable (and previously unidentified until thanks to the internet) set of identical twins dressing alike through the ages? Decades worth of cute! (via NY Mag Approval Matrix)

4. With Roots Jewelry by Sharon Goldberg marry all things awesome in both jewelry and terrariums. Teeny-tiny terrariums for your neck!

5. Rookie, the spanking new online mag helmed by our favorite teen ever, Tavi. Geared toward teens (and forever teens-at-hearts), the magazine is updated three times a day – after school, dinner, and before bed. Tavi Gevinson for President!!!

ANDREA’S PICKS:

6. My Friendship Bracelet Maker would’ve been at the top of my birthday/holiday wishlist when I was a kid. One of the best things about being a grown-ass woman is that I can buy these silly things for myself without having to beg my mom. Added bonus: the website has a ton of great pattern tutorials. Think I’m going to level up and attempt the zig zag next.

7. For Francesca’s latest vintage drop on Shop Lawrence, she headed to Coney Island with an armful of dresses. I am absolutely smitten with this set of photos–the warm ketchup and mustard tones of the photos go so well with the dresses (and hot dogs).

8. This Healdsburg cabin that Tiger in a Jar posted is incredible. Despite it’s tragic and questionable messaging, I especially love the Japanese whaling poster that depicts various ways whales are used in everyday items. Hmmrrr… (update: the cabin is the Chalk Hill Residency at the Warnecke Ranch.)

9. A couple teasers for Series 2 of Downton Abbey have made their way around the Interwebs, and I can’t wait to dive back in come January 8, 2012.

Mamiya + NYC bound

While not a total bust, I clearly need to learn a thing or two about my Mamiya. Like, what are some shots randomly super underexposed when the next one in that same setting is fine? Why were practically allllll my shots overlapping a little? Things to figure out, for sure. But I can tell this baby has potential for serious beauty.

I’m currently, as you read this, on a plane to NYC as I’m photographing a wedding this weekend upstate! It’s my first professional shoot in a long time and my first as the main photographer, so I’m really excited. I’m taking four different cameras with me, digital and film, so it should be fun. I’ve been taking on a couple photo jobs lately, which is so nice to put a different creative hat on and get away from my computer. I’m sad this has to be such a short trip, it was planned back when I had a fulltime job and only had three vacation days left, but I’ll take all the NY I can get in just a few days.

I’ve had such a crazy, and not gonna lie, terrible week that I kind of failed at finding guest bloggers, but I have Friday taken care of with two rad ladies tag-teaming Friday Bits for you, and I’ll be back with weekend photos on Tuesday. See you then!

NPR pleases again by streaming yet another great new album, this time St. Vincent’s Strange Mercy. Actor was such a staple for me in 2009, and this new album is a bit more complex, a bit more guitar-wailing (rad), and I love it a lot so far.

Shop Update Heads Up

September 5th, 2011

The next shop update will be tomorrow, Tuesday, September 6th at 5pm PST. A preview is available now! There are colors for those hanging on to these last days of Summer, and those who are ready for Fall.

I’m trying to do a shop update every month now, but my first month of freelancing kind of knocked me on my butt, so this is a bit late! Hopefully November’s update will be in exactly a month.

subway riding | biscuit eating | tucked in | giant pistachio macaron from Lemonade at MOCA | pollution makes for wondrous sunsets

A work weekend, so not a lot of picture taking, but we did take a fun break on Sunday to ride the train downtown to MOCA to see the Lynda Benglis show, eat tacos, watch a beautiful sunset, and I made a giant mess of the apartment getting ready for the shop update.

We also are embarking on becoming vegetarians who occasionally eat fish – a goal that was interestingly Will’s idea, the meat meat meat man. I was vegan for a long time so it’s not too tough for me, but I’m remembering all the annoying things about it quickly. I am always hungry, mushrooms and eggplant (my enemies) are constant meat substitutes at restaurants, and I really need to learn to cook vegetarian better as I was a terrible cook back when I was vegan. So, because I’ve been out of this world for five years, any good veggie blogs out there? I love 101 Cookbooks, but sometimes the recipes are a bit more complicated than I can embark on. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

I know it’s late for a post, but I was driving all day and ended up not having wireless all week to do anything online besides using my phone, so this post was delayed. I can’t do a usual Friday Bits post seeing as I wasn’t reading blogs all week, so I’ll share some photos from our trip to Phoenix to see Will’s family. Not gonna lie, that “working vacation” ended up not having a lot of work involved. It’s impossible to work around family that doesn’t understand why you can’t hang out and friends who you want to go see. So I will definitely be making up for that allllll weekend and then some. Oh well! 115 degree heat, how do people do it all summer there? Therefore no cool desert picture taking happened because hell no, I was not going out in the desert to take pictures! Mostly my camera hung out in my bag until we got to our friends’ new apartment filled to the brim with rad vintage stuff and a ham of a kitten. All in all I got a sweet tan from a mere 20 minute swim, and a cool $3 skirt from the thrift store, so I’m a happy clam. Now, back to work… have a great weekend! I’m planning on doing a shop update early next week in the evening, so get ready for a more specific announcement on Monday.
