Friday Bits

December 16th, 2011

Well, not a true Friday Bits, but one of sorts. I have a lot of random things to blog about lately that aren’t cohesive.

Definitely check out the latest Makers Project feature, with the always wonderful Lily Stockman, where you get to sort of see what she looks like (bangin’, of course). It’s such a treat.

Thank you for all the nice comments about the beads I’ve been making! You pumped me up to make more and I think you possibly talked me into selling some of the necklaces in the next shop update.

In other news, I totally did not notice that the wedding I shot a few months ago was up on 100 Layer Cake until people started emailing me about weddings. So awesome, I’m honored and it’s fun to hear Lesley’s background story on the wedding.

Anyway, have a great weekend, friends! Will and I are working on a special post to thank everyone for all your support lately, so don’t think I’ve forgotten about you guys.

Did you see Robyn on SNL over the weekend? Despite the fact that the show is so painfully bad lately (Katy Perry hosting, WHY??), it’s one of those shows that proves to be comforting when you spend a lot of time in bed, so we’ve watched them ALL lately (Will beats me in that department, but I have joined him for quite a few). The performances are usually so bland that Robyn’s crazy ass dancing – and a little rolling around on the floor – was SO awesome to watch. She is nuts on stage in all the right ways. I’d love to see her live. Also, at the very end of the show when they’re all out on stage, she’s shorter than everyone else despite wearing those monstrously tall shoes – girlfriend is so much shorter than I pictured!

If you’re not in the states you can find the clips on youtube here or here – in somewhat terrible quality as NBC is good about taking them down. Here – thanks Erica for the link to better clips!

Lately, I increased cat cuteness by at least 60% with a homemade bandana and have been making clay beads for kicks. A year ago I was telling a friend in New York how badly I wanted to make ceramic beads but it was too complicated without access to all the proper tools, and she suggested using polymer clay. I thought, “The beads we made as kids for hemp bracelets?? Ew.” Cue a few months later when Jennifer proved me wrong about my thoughts on the clay. So I’ve been experimenting, trying to stay far, far away from any hippie flower patterns and making interesting textures and color combinations. My next goal is to save up for the means to make beads with metal clay, which would require a mini kiln. We shall see.

I have to admit that this past week was one of our roughest. But with the help of care packages (more on that later) and seriously taking it easy this weekend, we got through it. I even at one time felt bored on Sunday. Bored! I forgot what that was like.

Here’s one super awesome not boring thing that happened. Lisa is my new neighbor and I couldn’t have been happier to put on a dress and a pair of heels and have a delicious meal with her (and slightly ridiculous holiday themed cocktails) at Mohawk Bend and check out an awesome new store, Myrtle, in Echo Park. Myrtle is pretty much stocked with products made by every awesome lady friend I know on the internet and it was so cool seeing that stuff in person. I tend to maroon myself on the island that is my apartment lately and I was reminded of how good it feels to have some girl time. I can’t wait for Will to be well enough to be around friends again because he is probably so sick of me right now he never wants to see a cute baby on instagram shoved in his face again (that doesn’t cheer everyone up??).

Let’s do this shiz, week 9, aka THE END, we’re taking you down. They don’t have a bell you get to ring at Cedar’s when you finish treatment (I’ve read about other places having this) but Will says he’s glad they don’t as that would make him feel crappy to see other people ringing the bell if you had a long ways to go. Instead I wish they had a punching bag with the words “cancer” on it that you could beat the absolute hell out of at the end. Maybe something you could safely blow up?? Just some angsty week-fuled ideas I’m throwing out there, guys. I just want to throw scalding hot coffee into cancer’s face, is basically what I’m saying. No big deal!

FMFY mix chill Weekly Music

I’ve had a stressful week and combined with this cooler weather*, I’ve been bumping the slow jams. Namely Bonnie “Prince” Billy on constant repeat as that suits my mood the best, but some others I decided to compile into a Chill mix. I know I already have a “mellow” mix and the last wordless mix wasn’t exactly dance-worthy, but there have been no dance parties in this apartment for months, so, slow jams it is.

  1. Waterproof – This Is The Kit
  2. Tornado – Damien Jurado
  3. Kimmi In a Rice Field – Twin Sister
  4. Lay and Love – Bonnie “Prince” Billy
  5. Undiscovered First – Feist
  6. Racing Like A Pro – The National
  7. Tangerine - First Aid Kit
  8. Rome (Neighbours and Devendra Banhart Remix) – Phoenix
  9. Don’t Do It – Sharon Van Etten
  10. Let ‘Em In – Wings
  11. Strange Mercy – St. Vincent
  12. The Rooster Moans – Iron & Wine

*I know you may be all like, oh wahhh LA cold weather, but it’s been super cold at night and we don’t have heat so shut it, I’m cold!

Randomness

LovelyBeing wishlist Randomness

Some random things to bring to your attention:

  • Though blogging is not my forte lately, I did take a moment recently to put together two guest posts for fantastic people that can help you reminisce of a time when I blogged about things other than myself. Remember stuff? Remember when I was really into shoes? Just kidding. I have a holiday wishlist (pictured above) over at my buddy Fallon’s blog A Lovely Being and a curated a collection of awesome prints at A Working Proof.
  • Today is the last day to purchase items from Handmade Holiday!
  • Or, alternately (or additionally, big spender?) you can buy jewelry in my shop because you are definitely not too late this time. See the beauty of more frequent shop updates? No cat fights over brass drops in the Paypal check out line.
  • Lastly, I told Ilana I’d give a shout out to an awesome sale she and other designers I love are having in NYC this weekend on the 10th. The line-up of designers is a dream team and “sale” means actual sale, not just for sale. Read more.
