Rest of the film

April 2nd, 2012

The last of my recent film shots.

Over the weekend I was at a shoot and shot a whole 36 exposures of film before realizing it never wound properly and I didn’t take a single shot. I was shooting digital at the same time, thank god, but I’ve never made that mistake before with my A-1 (only once with a vintage camera I bought that was broken) and I wanted to explode with sadness and anger. The surprise and preciousness of film comes with its downfalls, which just adds to the magic of it, I know, but still. UGH. Mercury in retrograde, y’all.

Oh no! The sadness. I did that with my Diana Mini and with my AE-1. Ugh, indeed.

    Gorgeous last shots.

ugh, how frustrating, I’m sorry. Yeah, that’s what’s nice about digital. Also makes life better for people like wedding photographers. They don’t have to worry about destroying a bride’s special day anymore (though that in itself caused an influx of subpar “wedding photographers” to surface, so maybe it’s not so great).

That never happened to me before, but I once tore part of a roll when rewinding it. Basically I didn’t unlock the stuff and bam! Just wanted to slap myself on the face. Guess that’s why I love my automatic Canon Eos 500N :)

Kind of DYING to see that dhurrie rug in color, so perhaps not the worst thing in the world that you shot with your DSLR in the end, right? Silver lining and all?

    mwa!

I totally did the same thing recently, for the first time in my life! I was trying to make the most of every frame so I didn’t wind it as much as usual in the very start, and it didn’t even catch. Ugh! If the film isn’t winding properly then the winder on the left side won’t move (I think?), so that’s something you can check when you start a roll.

damn, I never thought of looking at that! I even made sure it wound twice before closing the back, but clearly something went wrong.

Love the shots, that Halona glass piece really looks fab. I had that happen with my La Sardina, & it felt so horrible because I wasn’t even a novice, it shot my confidence in my film photographing abilities for a while & even made me feel depressed for a bit but I got over it. And yes film definitely has it’s ups & downs like that but in the end we still love it, yes? :)

I´ve been taking pictures for so many years and this still happens at least once in a year,i know try to be very careful and have a film diary so i know what film is in each camera,i find this to be very useful for people like me that tend to be very distracted with the excitement of taking pictures :)
i kind of feel a little nostalgic because i don´t develop and shoot a black and white film in a long long time.maybe April will be the month to start doing it again.
    and yes,Mercury is a bitch.

That is just so very frustrating! How annoying for you! I really enjoy your black & white pictures though.

i really love all of your b+w shots. like, the goodness of them actually hurts. (hopefully that makes up for the loss of images? ok, i know it doesn’t, but maybe it’ll make you feel better…?)

that last shot looks like you’re doing some wax carving…that pencil-blade thing looks nifty…what is it? (is it sort of like a jeweler’s saw?) it’s kind-of making me nostalgic for my be-goggled past! :)

yep, carving some wax lately for the next iteration of my brass drops! It’s taking me so much longer than I anticipated.

Oh dear, that’s the worst! What makes it worse is you can always kind of remember what the photographs looked like when you pressed the shutter… oh well. These are lovely, especially the first one, it looks like a whirlpool, or coffee vortex… (what is it, actually?)

it totally is a coffee vortex!

Oh, that really sucks! It’s happened to me a couple of times so I know how maddening it is! It’s too bad to be left with only digital photos, but I’m sure they’ll be good!
That first shot is so great! It feels like you could get lost in the coffee vortex!

Ugh, I remember that happening to me in my film days. Such a disappointment! But keep going anyway because we all love your film shots!
