Weekly Music: Coachella

April 12th, 2012

I’m going to sign off of this mediocre at best blogging week because tomorrow we head off to Coachella. The most common response to me telling friends that we’re going is “YOU guys are going?” Yes. We hate crowds, blazing sun, drunk people, people in general honestly, and spending ridiculous amounts of money on an experience, but I do love music more than most things in life and it seems like something you have to do at least once when you live in LA. Though I’m nervous that I’ll be annoyed beyond belief, going through the set times that were just released and figuring out who we’ll see has me so pumped up. I’m going to OD on good music. Here’s who I’m excited to see, below. We probably won’t see them all, but hopefully many of them.

The Black Angels

Neon Indian

Mazzy Star

M83

Feist

Radiohead

Andrew Bird

tUnE-yArDs

St Vincent (who were both most excited to see!)

The Head and The Heart (playing at the same time as tUnE-yArDs, arrrggg)

Beirut (playing at the same time as the only show Will cares about all weekend, Company Flow. Bummer, they put on such a good show.)

Gotye (I only like half of the new album, but I figure he probably puts on a good show)

First Aid Kit (most excited about #2)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I hate people in general, too, and Coachella is generally overwhelming and messy and full of idiots, but I’ve gone the past few years and loved every second. It’s the first time I won’t be there, and I’m so, so sad. Have the best time.

we went for the first time last year with the same reservations (we also hate large crowds and drunk people and large crowds OF drunk people) but it was one of the best times ever. The amount of music is incredible and we were even surprised by bands we didn’t even expect we wanted to see. Have fun!!

I saw First Aid Kit in Vancouver on Tuesday. They were amazing, absolutely effortless singing. They played their Patti Smith cover, which I LOVE! Also, Peggy Sue opened, I was surprised to recognize one of their songs from your harmony mix!

I have never been for all the reasons you listed above so I salute you for your dedication to all things music! Have fun & wear lots of sunscreen.

P.S. Since you’re going out there, I wanted to share with you my Coachella food guide, with gluten-free options! http://www.laimyours.com/14333/unseen-la-nine-food-pitstops-you-must-make-at-coachella/

I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous. This will be my first year not going in five years. Biggest piece of advise… eat before you go and bring in a huge water bottle (unopened). Both are so expensive and last year the food vendors took a huge downhill plummet. Have so much fun!

It’s an amazing festival! I’ve been to Benicassim in Spain & Lollapollooza in Chicago and nothing compares. The music & art installations are wonderful, and it’s just a grand weekend overall. First time I’m not going in 10 years! So, I’m a bit sad this weekend. Ignore anybody who gets on your nerves or any of the BAD fashion you will run into & just focus on the music–that’s what it’s all about anyway :)

ps i bought your brass drops necklace recently and i absolutely love it. can’t wait to collect more of your pieces.

I know what you mean about hating people in general – especially at concerts. My sister and I went to a concert a few years ago where they were throwing a beach ball around and it kept hitting us in the head. My sister got so fed up that she actually grabbed it, stomped it, and then shoved the shriveled remains in her backpack. Yeeeeah. We weren’t the most popular folks there, but we did get to actually listen to the last half of the concert without an inflatable ball slamming us in the face every five seconds.

“We hate crowds, blazing sun, drunk people, people in general honestly, and spending ridiculous amounts of money on an experience,” HAHA. You just summed up my life in addition to the reasons why I’m NOT going to Coachella. But I sure do love the lineup. Enjoy!

I went to coachella two years ago and while i loved the experience of seeing so many amazing bands and I’m so glad I went, I wouldn’t do it again (see: heat, drunk annoying people getting in the way of the music, general chaos, horrid bathroom situations, etc). BUT…as an alternative i’d like to recommend the Outside Lands Festival up in San Francisco. It’s in Golden Gate Park, and August in SF is a gorgeous time to be there weather-wise. It’s also really well organized and a foodie/wino’s dream.

hahah i laughed when i read your reasoning!
because i am quite the same. out of all my friends, i hate crowds so much and they are always surprised when i come out to hang out with them because i am such a home body, or just rarely go out!
but coachella! oooh! that sounds fun, i wanna goo!
hope you had fun Kate! :-)

Couldn’t agree with you more–this describes my husband and me to a T! We went to Austin City Limits while we were in college, and it was a pretty horrible experience. We went the year that is now referred to as the “Dust Bowl”–basically, it got to 108 degrees outside (in September!) and was very windy. By the end of the day, we were completely filthy (I actually had visible dirt in my eyes and all over my exposed skin). But the music was great! I’m sure your experience will be much, much better.
