It’s been a while since I did an “original vs the cover” music post (originally inspired by Stephanie), and I’ve been saving this one in the back of my mind for a while now. “Plain Gold Ring”, an amazing Nina Simone song, beautifully covered most recently by Kimbra, I also really love the White Magic version, and I came across this incredible cover on youtube by a band called Grandfather Glen – definitely more of a cover of the Kimbra version. I like the live version of Nina’s better than the original album version, but I couldn’t find a youtube video of so you can hear it on Spotify. And actually I love Kimbra’s live version better as well, but the album version is also great. It’s such a sad, sultry song. It’s all about the push and pull in the vocals and has such a spoken word poem quality to it.
