Weekly Music: Recent Favorites

It’s been a great week for music discovery, so I have a bigger list than usual of songs I’ve been loving lately! And on an unrelated note, before we jump in, you have until tomorrow to order jewelry or prints from me to make it in time for Christmas in the US! Ok, onwards.

Bonzie, the 18 year old wonder that released a beautiful album a few months ago, Rift into the Secret of Things. “Convert” is my favorite song – I could only find a live version on youtube (which is quite wonderful), but the song and others are on Spotify and Soundcloud. I’d love to see her live but I guess I missed her in November!

Midlake, “The Old And The Young”. I haven’t given their latest album, Antiphon, enough of a listen to recommend it, but I’m obsessed with this song. It reminds me a bit of Junip and Jose Gonzalez’s songs for Zero 7.

Courtney Barnett‘s “Avant Gardener” is on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Tracks of 2013 and I’d never heard it before! Can’t wait to give this album a good listen as well. This is such a good driving/walking around song. You can see the whole Pitchfork list here and listen to the Spotify playlist. I’ll be doing my own list ready for the new year soon!

Despite the fact that I cannot stand Mumford & Sons and don’t really have a huge urge to see Inside Llewyn Davis (I can’t stand downer movies where the main character is an ass and leads a miserable life), I am so crazy about the Marcus Mumford/Oscar Isaac song for the soundtrack, “Fare Thee Well”. The whole album isn’t on Spotify and I am ridiculously poor right now, but I hear it’s amazing (thanks to the always amazing T Bone Burnett). I might see the movie just for the music.

Lastly, you know my love of Chet Faker, and his new song, “Drop The Game”, with Flume is fantastic and the video is mesmerizing. They have a great 3 song EP out, Lockjaw.
