Custom Moving Card

July 29th, 2009

It’s been a while since I posted a weekly what what, and I have to admit that when I made this card for Esme, it was the first time I touched a pen for things other than signing my name in weeks. I’d love to do more little side projects like this to keep me drawing, as it’s so much fun. If you have a need for any custom cards, posters, blog headers, etc and want to hire me, hit me up at katemiss at gmail.com!

the weekly what what – sweet solitude

July 9th, 2009

I let last week’s weekly what what slide in hopes that the Bike Aid poster would pretty much count even though I made it weeks before, but this week I couldn’t do that again. I drew this in Stephentown while watching a deer in a field alone, thinking about how solitude and silence are like gold in New York City. Last night as I drifted asleep to the sound of my air conditioner shaking my whole room above my head, and drunk people shrieking at a nearby bar, I would have given up Ben & Jerry’s for a week to have that moment of solitude again.

Bike Aid Poster

I just wanted to share a poster I recently created for the lovely Andrea of miel et cannelle. I spent a whole Saturday drawing bikes for this one, which was quite a different experience than I’m used to with drawing!

Live Now collaboration

June 24th, 2009

Live Now collaboration, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

I was pretty dang excited when Eric Smith contacted me to do a collaboration with him for his Live Now project. If you’re not familiar with it, Live Now is “a project consisting of a growing collection of artwork, quotes, thoughts, experiences and ideas, powerfully pursuing the notion of ‘living now’. Engaging participants to grow, live meaningful lives & be happy!” which all came about after Eric was diagnosed with cancer and his perspective on life was changed.

So Eric gave me this quote to work with, and I’m pretty excited about the results. I’m honored to be a part of a project that some amazing artists that I admire, like Mike Perry and Will Bryant, have also contributed to. I can’t wait to see what becomes of the project and who else contributes!

the weekly what what – my motto

June 11th, 2009

my motto, originally uploaded by shespeaksoceans.

I never watched Project Runway religiously, but the first time I heard Tim Gunn say “make it work”, I couldn’t help but tuck it away in my head for future use. I repeat it to myself constantly. I have it taped to my computer monitor at work. It’s just so simple and perfect, and something to live by when you’re working on a project.

The Weekly What What – Watercolor

June 3rd, 2009

I’ve been shifting gears this week on focusing on making jewelry, so I haven’t touched a pen in a while. Last night I forced myself to draw and paint for a couple hours while Billy sat behind me at the kitchen table and worked on his stuff, as his semester just ended at school and he works more at home now. There’s something about those moments where we’re both in the same room, not talking, listening to music, and working on our own projects that’s so great. I think it’s important to have someone, anyone, who you can feed creative energy off of. Even if you’re not working together to make something, it’s just creative atmosphere collaboration.

the weekly what what: Just Like That

May 27th, 2009

I printed this lettering on some kraft paper and set it aside, not being totally into it, but Billy found it on my desk and gushed over it, so I decided it was weekly what what worthy. From these drawings that I’m not 100% sure on what to do with yet!

The Weekly What What: All Around Your Head

April 29th, 2009

The background was originally for a project at work, but it turned out to weird for my boss, so I took it home and worked on it to be my own thing. The text is from lyrics to a song my friend Ian wrote for our old band. I think it’s quite a lovely line, don’t you?

I’m clumped all my posts together today on my lunch break. That’s so good of me! (*pats back)

The Weekly What What: Let’s Sleep Like Babies…

April 22nd, 2009

From a new series I’m working on that I like best because I get to use my photos!

Prints will be for sale real real soon. I had no idea how picky I would be about opening an Etsy shop. You truly are your own worst client.

the weekly what what

April 15th, 2009

I sat down at my desk for an hour last night trying to draw for this week’s drawing, and came up with nothing but poo. So I’m going to be a lazy bastard and just post an old drawing from my sketchbook, and a semi-old drawing that hangs on string at my desk. Cop out, I know! I blame the rain, people on the subway who lean their whole body against the poles, and pigeons.

Fun fact: the drawing of my legs above is actually accurate. My left leg below my knee and foot is inexplicably larger than my right, since 2005. Doctors cannot explain it. I also blame this on the same reasons above for not having a drawing today.
