I mean, it was edible but the whole time we ate it all I could think about was how it reminded me of something I would have ate when I was in my hippie phase in college. Bland and oh-so-chewy. Lots of chewing involved.

But! What I did get out of the recipe was a jar of almond butter, which I decided made peanut butter seem like the red headed step child of spreads. I'm not really that into peanut butter, but this- Oh god it's delicious! A bit thicker and a little harder to spread (this could just be because I'm used to JIF and this was all-natural unstirred stuff which in peanut butter form makes me gag.) It's pricey but I can't seeing myself eat it that often.

In other news, this article about people buying monkeys as their kids ("monkids") makes my stomach turn with sadness.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Wackness.

And, I bid you farewell and I'll be back Monday where I explode all over this blog from holding in shopping posts. I was totally sure that it was in a Bon Jovi music video, but after watching 10 of his videos to find it for you (I'm committed people) I've come up empty handed. Now I think maybe it's Guns & Roses or Def Leppard or something, but I've lost all intrest in searching (and I should really be working). Here are my suggestions:

Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, The Mistress and The Tangerine. I'd love to embed the trailer but it's been disabled on youtube for this video (lame). So just click here. I knew zip about Louise before Billy talked me into seeing this, and now I want to see everything she's ever made and read everything about her. Her retrospective is at the Guggenheim here as well and if you go see the film at the Film Forum your ticket stubs get you two for one admission at the museum! I can't wait to go. This film was well worth sitting in front of a crazy woman who sang along to all the French songs and a woman in front of me who talked to herself half of the film.

Persepolis:

If you didn't see this when it was in theaters, it just came out on dvd last week, so get on it because it's not only a facinating history lesson on Iran, but an animated beauty. I would like to make every teenager who bitches about their life watch this (including my past me).

Nouvomondo (The Golden Door):

A breathtaking Italian film about a poor Italian farmer's journey to America in the early 1900s, featuring everyone's favorite girl crush, Charlotte Gainsbourg. This is the first time I've watched a movie by myself in a long time, and I think it was perfect for that because it's very slow and subtle so paying close attention and being able to cry without feeling like a wimp is key. The last scene floored me, as did the many things I learned about immigration back then that I never knew.

Mankind Mag

I'm sure you all already know about this, but it would be a crime for me to not mention that Design For Mindkind released Mankind Mag today (in pdf format and the latest news is that it's available in print as well!). I feel like the last 2 weekends before this one I completely wasted it by being lazy and getting too drunk, but this weekend I finally was back to going out and seeing art, and getting things done. I saw a great show at both locations of the Deitch Projects that I highly reccommend- Os Gemeos on Wooster St (insane installation covering every inch of the gallery) and Constraction on Grand St. I didn't get any photos because it was so packed and I was so overwhelmed, but I wish I had because it was a serious fashion show...which is good and bad. ha.

But above is another amazing piece by one of my favorite artists, Do Ho Suh at Lehmann Maupin (which is decidedly my favorite gallery) which wasn't even the main focus of the gallery, but took my breath away.

So, this all brings me to my next point: the theme in this week's blogging. This week I'm taking an oath to not blog about shopping. It's a very short blogging week as I'm going upstate Thursday and Friday, but that's good because I'm not sure I'm capable of not blogging about things you can buy for 5 whole godamn days! There are two reasons I've come to this decision:
1. I'm broke. I just went a little crazy lately and need to calm the hell down and have no temptations!
2. My good friend Lauren told me that my blog has influenced her spending way too much lately and seemed genuinely annoyed that she could not control herself sometimes after reading my suggestions and your comments suggestions. While a person should be responsible for their own self control, Lauren has been kicking ass on the Weight Watchers diet for months now and I'm very proud of her self control in that aspect so I'll give the girl some slack on shopping. Plus who the heck am I to talk about self control?

So this week I bring you no mention of shopping, scout's honor. I'll bring you recipes (food shopping doesn't count), art, music, and..um...inspiration! Yeah. Plus 2 days of silence. And if Andrea stops by with any shopping posts, that is just fine because I miss her posts too much to ask her to abide the ban:)

Summer Pefection

Roberta Oaks Maritine Dress

Perfect Summer Song - Baby Don't Go

I've heard this song 3 times in the last 2 days in random stores. I vividly remember my first bff necklace I shared with my friend Jill, in 5th grade. She was mormon (as were all my friends back then, to my athiest parents dismay) so the necklace had some mormon scripture on the back. Hilarious. After an exhausting search online, there are a lot of shitty cheap versions out there, one hideous Juicy Couture version that comes up all over, and 2 fantastic versions worth a damn:

Noir Best Friends Necklace

Best Fuckin Friends Necklace (this has been popping up all over the blogosphere)

I think some of the great jewelry makers with etsy stores need to get on this trend, stat.

Etsy Find: nea

I adore these necklaces from neawear.

keyboard mod

Steampunk keyboard mod. This is extremely exciting news.
However, the strange thing is that you have to request a membership to join the site and they hand-pick people. They say:
Totokaelo is not elitist. We are about creating an original online shopping experience through hand-picking members that have something in common.

I think this walks a very thin line of not awesome and totally awesome. I was hanging out with some friends on Friday and a friend of a friend was wearing them, like some sort of hilarious tease. I said "are those Matt Bernson sandals?" and she looked at me, slightly puzzled and said, "oh I don't know....". She reached down and pulled her sandal to her face to peer onto the insole and said, "Wow, yes they are, how the hell did you know that?"
Then everyone looked at me- the girls like, "oh you know your fashion, girl" and the boys like, "billy, your girlfriend has a shopping problem, huh?"

So that tangent leads me to the sandals I bought instead, that were half the price and are hot hot hot. I wore them all 2 miles home and they were heavenly comfortable. The gold front makes them spectacularly interesting, and if you aren't into a brown sandal they come in black. It was very hard for me to decide which color to get, I wish it wouldn't be ridiculous of me to own both colors.

$50 at Urban Outfitters, who I swore I wouldn't buy sandals from again, but these were not there cheap, hung on the hangers all over the store kind. I walked 30 minutes through a rainstorm and they didn't hurt me for one minute. What I love about Shoegasm is that nothing is over $100, they stock great brands like Dolce Vita alongside smaller brands you can't find at many other places. Most of them are great quality too. It's full of hideous clothing that I picture girls with boring desk jobs and dress codes shopping at. But the always fabulous boboniaa occasionally notes in her wardrobe remix photos that pieces are from Zara. So I gave the Zara in Soho a chance and scored big time with this awesome shirt in their TRF collection (which I gathered was like a younger-oriented line). I can't find a photo online so here's mine (aka why I was late for work this morning). $25 and totally not chain-store looking.

Rock on Zara.

PS. The dinner last night was a serious success! It turned out so ridiculously good, highly recommended.

Adventures in being a grown up

I'm a pretty terrible cook. Or, perhaps more fairly to myself I'll say I'm a simple cook and I make stupid beginner mistakes. I have no idea how to spice things, when things are done cooking, how to chop a vegetable to save my life, the list goes on and on. You can't blame me though, it's not that I just never cared to learn, I just never had anyone to learn from. As a child my mother's favorite meal for dinner was a giant bowl of cereal. I cannot even recall how many times I ate Fruity Pebbles for dinner, there were too many times to count. My childhood food pyramid should have had a box of cereal at the very top. Another favorite was McDonalds, Hamburger Helper, and disgusting dishes like corned beef and stroganoff. I'd ask if we could buy fruit and my mom would usually deny me because I was the only one in the house who ate it, so it would go bad. I was so god damn lucky I had the most incredibly metabolism as a kid. So who can blame me for not knowing how to put together a meal?

So I've decided that my goal this summer is to learn how to cook better. To cook things that I'm not mortified to put in front of people, to be inventive, to make things that are delicious. My friend Emily grew up in a completely opposite household as I did, her mother taught cooking classes and she had the all-American family dinners every night. She is such a kick ass cook and I am completely embarrassed for her to even look at anything I've cooked. She is my cooking inspiration, for sure.

Something awesome I just stumbled upon is 101 Cookbooks, a recipe journal by a girl with a huge cookbook collection who blogs about her favorite recipes (largely vegetarian). I am so making this Baked Pasta Casserole(photo above) tonight. Sounds easy. Baby steps my friends, baby steps.
